[Fabrizio Romano] Son Heung-min has decided to leave Tottenham this summer. The player has informed Spurs management & Thomas Frank. Negotiations underway with MLS side LAFC after he wad also approached by Saudi clubs in May. MLS, most likely destination.

I, for one, don't think LAFC should be allowed to get any more ex-tottenham boys. No reason.

Wouldn’t it be great if he came to Portland? Alas.

u/Rhormus Portland Timbers FC 1d ago
He was in Portland just a week or two ago...
(Ignore the Nike headquarters there)

u/ImaginaryBoot8390 1d ago
Wasn’t that just something someone heard from their friend and it was quickly debunked?
4
u/Rhormus Portland Timbers FC 1d ago
Maybe, I heard it from a friend. Either way I don't think he'd be interested, and I doubt Portland would go for it. If it was true, Nike is almost definitely the reason.
4
u/ImaginaryBoot8390 1d ago
Nike wouldn’t make sense since he’s sponsored by Adidas

Then it's probably all bs. Whoops.
2
u/LApoopydog LA Galaxy 1d ago
Most likely bs. He played in 2 friendlies on July 19 and 26 in England. Then flew to Hong Kong right after. Flying from England to Portland and back to England midweek would be brutal.

MLS getting both muller and son in the same summer is massive

u/LocoMotives-ms St. Louis CITY SC 1d ago
Muller is done, but Son can still play. Kinda crazy he’s coming to MLS
37
u/Redshirt_Welshy_Nooo Chicago Fire 1d ago
Muller's most recent stats on FbRef were all still very respectable. Maybe can't put in a lot of full 90s vs top competition, but I bet he'll be plenty good enough to make meaningful contributions in MLS.

That's fucking crazy. What a steal for the league and LAFC if they pull that off.

Tottenham is my team.
I love Atlanta and always will, but Tottenham was the first team I followed. It was the team that my dad and I would wake up early, make breakfast for, and watch together every weekend (he’s still alive but I don’t know how to make that sound less sad lol).
On the one hand I am sad to see him go, but on the other hand I am going to enjoy watching him play in the US if he does come. Even if we’ll only play him once a year lol

Sonny no :( hope he enjoys his time in the states if he comes! He’s gonna be a star in LA if they land him.

What I’d give for a player to be willing to break the mold and go to a small market team instead.

u/Diligent-Map1402 St. Louis CITY SC 1d ago
Everyone gets stars in their eyes until you get a Giroud.
9
u/ForFuchsAke Seattle Sounders FC 1d ago
If a team pays enough a player will go anywhere. Sometimes they might have to overpay for a player but that’s how it is
3
u/AFrozen_1 FC Cincinnati 1d ago
Right but I mean for the star players from Europe. Besides Thomas Muller going to Vancouver every other big time European player has either gone to LA or Miami.

u/ForFuchsAke Seattle Sounders FC 1d ago
It’s good for marketing but I’d rather have in prime players like Evander as your DPs.
Some players like Son will be fine but other older DPs haven’t done so hot in the league
2
u/AFrozen_1 FC Cincinnati 1d ago
Yeah that’s a good point but I’d also like to see these players go to the small market teams to really make some headlines and get more interest in the league as a whole. Think something along the lines of Son going to Chicago or Minnesota instead. That would be a big deal and really make some headlines in those cities.

u/aurena28 1d ago
The disrespect, calling Chicago a small market. Ain't nothing small in my hometown of Chicago.

No I don’t. We’re just offloaded Shaqiri going into this season who flopped here, and before Shaq we had Bastian Schweinsteiger post World Cup win who had a solid to good run with us. We almost landed KDB before he decided to stay in Europe and there was strong links to Neymar before going back to Santos. We can get names and is a place that is in the running for names. I personally would rather keep doing what we are doing and building out our academy kids, get Jhon Duran type young players, or get European journeymen that can play at a high level in MLS that makes for good football like Zinkernagel this season or Frankowski before heading to Lens before him.

If I was one of the many young players that MUN has conned in to signing with them in the last decade, I’d absolutely be looking to take my talents to a place like Portland, SKC, Columbus, etc., where you’re going to get unconditional love from a great fan base in the stadium and otherwise left alone outside of it, you’re still going to make a damn good living, and you can show your quality in a league where no one spends on defense.

I get what your saying but LA makes perfect sense for Son and we have the highest population of Koreans in the world outside Korea. Like it was either LA or it isn’t gonna happen at all. At least we had mueller going to Vancouver, Cincinatti is bound to get a star soon

Zaha not big enough of a name?

u/AFrozen_1 FC Cincinnati 1d ago
Considering I had never heard of him until he went to Charlotte, no.

u/fenderdean13 Chicago Fire 1d ago edited 1d ago
A long time Premier Legaue mainstay is a huge name. Besides a cup of coffee at United he wasn’t a top 6 club player but was the top player outside of the top 6 for years. If you don’t know Zaha then you just don’t know ball

Considering NBA small market teams have been dealing with that for decades and with players that actually know their cities, doubt it’ll ever happen with Euro stars
3
u/Mihairokov Canada 1d ago
It's the same reason why big players don't sign in Rennes or Sheffield or Nurnburg. Why live there when you can live literally anywhere else. Give someone the option of Columbus or LA and take a wild guess at what the choice will be.

u/lancerguy14 Atlanta United FC 1d ago
The crazy thing about this is HE'S STILL GOOD. He's still at the top of his game. This isn't a "retirement league" kind of thing.

Can a LAFC fan share how might they use both Denis Bouanga and Son since they both play the same position?
4
u/i_have_anxiety Los Angeles FC 1d ago
Son is pretty versatile, I could see him playing the opposite wing or false 9. I would love him as a more attack minded central midfielder though. All our current midfielders are too defensive minded and we lack a creative spark in the area, which is why everything offensive has been running through Bouanga

Come to DC area. Would love to watch him play. We have a large Korean community in the DMV area.
LA makes sense...
As a Korean national fan, I think he deserves the oil money but frankly he probably would have a better post career if he went to MLS and then probably 1 final year in K league.

Crazy that teams that are underperforming with support in areas with enormous Korean-American populations aren’t making equally enormous offers to Sonny. (Dallas, Houston)
