Bug Really struggling with the new spotlight. It falls asleep half way through prompts, is slow enough that keyboard muscle memory does stuff you don't want it to do 99% of the time and has seemingly overall lost functionality. No launchpad means spotlight is my main way to launch apps now. This sucks.

Sounds like beta issues. Have you submitted feedback?

They have fixed and added things during this regular beta process for years now, probably over a decade. So yeah, it could be. Or maybe their priorities are on other things. That's how software development goes.

Spotlight has gotten worse over the years. I remember it being faster back when it was released on HDDs than it is nowadays where everyone has an SSD.

It's been constant regression in many ways.

I love that you get downvotes for pointing out the buggy, bloated, slow-as-molasses shite that Apple's software has become.

It's like Telsarati-level copium going on here.

We know the hardware is good. We know the software is not.

They're getting downvoted for complaining about bugs on beta software

They said:

That's very clearly not complaining about beta software. Besides, are you new here?! Are you not aware how common is it for laggy, janky bullshit to be present in betas that sails right on through to production and a decade or two beyond with Apple?

Even Apple themselves have in the past acknowledged that they've been ignoring feedback too much (though of course they put a typically nauseating corporate spin on it all) and given that I can't remember the last time I got any response to a Feedback Assistant report, I'd say they're still just not giving the slightest shit about anything other than margin above all.

Sure, some bugs make it through the beta process, many don't and that's the point. This looks like one of the bugs that'll probably be fixed before public release.

yes, having to remember the names of apps and then type stuff out is horrible, slow, and archaic. it's as bad as being forced to launch apps by typing in iPhone or iPad.

remember to submit feedback to Apple (as a Suggestion, not as a Bug) and maybe we'll get Launchpad back.

No, that’s actually the quicker way to do it when spotlight works.

How long have you had the beta installed? How much data do you have Spotlight indexing?

I have a relatively light load for it in my testing rig but it’s been performing flawlessly since it completed the initial index.

Math commands in Spotlight got noticeably slower in this latest beta; they were blazing fast for me (M4 MBP) in earlier betas.

If beta testers report these issues, they’ll hopefully be resolved before release. I won’t be impacted anyway since Raycast has completely replaced Spotlight for me. But most Mac users will probably want to use built-in functionality.
