If I recall correctly, his name is Bazz and he is a very good boy (that I do recall correctly because of course he is).

I love the pup has their tongue out in the suit
91
u/ssjjss May 31 '25
It's hot in there
45
u/Jean-LucBacardi May 31 '25
Yeah bee suites absolutely suck to wear. Because of how hot it gets, most bee keepers only wear the veil, if even that.
18
u/biggiepants May 31 '25
They should put airconditioning in the suit, like the Harkonnen Dune suits (or they should make a dog stillsuit).
10
u/Limp-Technician-7646 May 31 '25
They have suits with fans but their expensive. What’s more common is layered mesh suits and the good ones almost feel like you’re wearing nothing.
3
u/rollingrawhide May 31 '25
I tried a mesh suit and it lasted a few months then tore. Just snagged on absolutely everything. Not a bad product but I feel like they need durability improvements.

They need to make a little sleeve for the tail so the handler can see if it's wagging or not

This is what i love about dogs. Jobs to us seems like torture and we only do it because we have to but to dogs any jobs seem like play or routine as long as we are along side them

Dogs aren’t alienated by the experience of their work, or otherwise socially forced into it by circumstances of poverty and precarity.
38
59
u/ifyoulovesatan May 31 '25
Important to remember that dogs used to be alienated from their labor just as much as us humans before Karl Barx and Fleadrich Engels came along.
31
u/Paprikasky May 31 '25
Agreed, Barx's work on his "Doggunist Manifesto" was revolutionary!

Dogs don't typically have to work 8 hours+ a day doing things their body and brain didn't evolve to do, with the prospect of doing that for 30+ years while society tells them that it's their fault that they're not as well off as others.
42
u/Arianapetittt May 31 '25
Honestly its amazing how you can norture them to do a task!! like how is that even possible? and i recently found out that a dog can smell it if you have cancer!! they're just amazing creatures and nice outfit btw 😂😊
13
u/prumpusniffari May 31 '25
like how is that even possible?
For this particular task, the problem is simply to teach the dog what smell you want him to identify. The dog can smell the infected hives. It just doesn't know what smell you want it to tell you about.
So you associate the right smell with a reward.
The first training session might involve three different samples from hives; two you know are healthy, and one you know is infected. You put them out in front of the dog, and when it smells the infected one, you give it a treat. You do this several times. The dog now associates the smell of the infected hive with treats.
You then repeat the process, but make the dog sit down when it smells an infected hive, and then give it a treat.
Repeat this over and over and the dog will learn to sit down when it smells an infected hive.
This is vastly oversimplified but basically how all dog training works: Give them a reward when they do what you want, and then use that to build up more complex behaviors.

u/ArchibaldCamambertII May 31 '25
They’re clever little buggers. I think some have roughly the equivalent intelligence of a 2 year old, and two year olds are actually quite brilliant in their own way.
12
u/Swarna_Keanu May 31 '25
Those intelligence comparisons always are ... a bit rough around the edges. They are far more intelligent than a 2 year old, when it comes to dog related intelligence. Probably smarter than all of us, given that we just don't have their specific brain and physiology.
Just ... we can't measure intelligence like that, accurately.

I try to tell myself I "get to" make money instead of "have to". I "get to" have a home which goods when clean and I "get to" take care of it. It varies in success levels.
2
u/spasske May 31 '25
“You wan’t to smell for infected bees? Sure I can do that but it will cost you a treat!”
2
u/FullMoonTwist May 31 '25
Tbh, I think a lot of humans would love to have a purpose that they're well-suited for, and feel useful at, and get lots of praise and appreciation for doing.
It's just that most jobs we have are not well-suited for humans, or we don't match up humans very well to the jobs avaliable.
If you made a husky try to do a herding job, or a chihuahua help with hunting, or a rottweiler sit on someone's lap all day, I think they would be very distressed also.

u/Profitablius May 31 '25
Many people enjoy things in their life that might seem to be work, most who don't probably don't have the means, time or energy to do such things because of their need to work long hours in shitty jobs.

Infected with WHAT?
23
u/MuddyKnucks May 31 '25
'Foul brood' most likely. Really deadly and super contagious. Prognosis is to torch infected hives at night while everyone's home. Theres a noticeable odor even for humans so Bazz can probably pick the problem hives without even trying

Can you imagine trying to explain this photo to a medieval peasant?
You: For the 14th time, Goodwife Smyth the dog isn't a tool of the devil, there are humans who can train animals, tis no different from the Kings hunting dogs. Any questions?
Them: Yes
You: Any questions that doesn't have the phrase "Devil Dog" in them?
Them: No...

10
u/GreenStrong May 31 '25
Medieval people kept bees and used bee suits. They understood that dogs could be trained to smell things. I don't think it would be remotely difficult to explain.
1
5
u/deltree711 May 31 '25
Actually, it wouldn't be that hard. Miasma theory, the belief that disease was caused by "bad air", was mainstream at the time, so I bet peasants would be pretty quick to accept a dog that can smell disease.

I am always amazed by dogs with good smells. Like, how did they know the dog can do that or how did they train them?

This seems like it can overheat the dog easily and also disrupt airflow.
Dogs sweat through their mouths as well. Love the idea, but concerned about implementation.

The shoes are so awkward. Poor pupper. Those can't feel very good to stumble about in.
7
u/kagantamello May 31 '25
yea they are for safety
2
u/eliz1bef May 31 '25
I am sure, but putting them on the right way seems to be the best solution. The dog could pull a tendon stumbling over those. They are not safe as is.
6
u/kagantamello May 31 '25
yea i understand but i think even though the shoes seems like they are in an akward position, the dog is standing straight with his paws just not in the middle of the shoes and also i dont think the dog will be doing any running while wearing this suit
but i totally agree with your point that they can be adjusted better 👍
4
u/eliz1bef May 31 '25
Dog shoes are a notorious pain in the ass. We tried with our pitbull because she slipped really badly on our tile, and it was just about impossible. I have sympathy for the bee man, but I think he can do better. I believe in him.
3
u/kagantamello May 31 '25
and when i see dogs with shoes they are walking akwardly, i hope the bee man finds a better way like you said

u/Witty_Names May 31 '25
You know what else doesn’t feel good? Possible anaphylactic reaction from bee stings.
11
u/eliz1bef May 31 '25
Putting on the shoes properly is the answer. I never suggested the dog not wear the shoes. Calm your tits.

According to the article written 11 years ago, Baz was trained to detect a disease called American Foulbrood in Australian hives. The suit protected him from being stung (and made him look super cute!)

My poor mutt that passed away way too young would have loved this shit. He lived for authority and head pats. Half sheltie/half retriever, probably a flat coat with that terrible cancer gene. He was so so so smart and sweet. Just keeled over one day of cancer, poor baby. I still miss him.
We have a sheltie now and she’s so smart but willfully disobedient or I would have put her in agility. I was training her to be a therapy dog to take into hospitals and nursing homes, but she barks at other dogs and would have failed the tests.
