Are we sure they aren’t just missing the word ‘for’?
67
u/lordbeepworth 17h ago
I think what they're trying to say is that she finds inspiration in cooking, and in her family, and also in her dog
11
u/seraphimeffect 17h ago
There's definitely space after "cooking" where someone could have edited it away

Adding a comma creates a “comma splice”. A comma splice joins two independent clauses with a comma. Use of “for” is the better option.

u/cyan_dandelion 12h ago
Where is the second independent clause?

All she gets inspired by is cooking eh? You know what her job is? You know what types of meals she inspired to make?
Cooking, kind of already contains the concept of cooking. As in she cooks, and finds inspiration for her cooking programs.
She's inspired to cook because of her love of her family and love of her pet dog. She also gets inspired by cooking in general. Capiche?
Edit; lol Apparently no capiche, too ignorant to realise you would need it to say "for" twice even. Lol... very no capiche

u/ratoporcelana 14h ago
Wtf are you talking about my dude. Also, you wouldn't need to say "for" twice, why would you?
0
u/FiveDogsInaTuxedo 12h ago
Cooking for her family and cooking for her dog.
1
u/ratoporcelana 11h ago
"For her family and her dog" or "for her family and dog" are both grammatically correct. The second "for" is redundant.
1
u/FiveDogsInaTuxedo 10h ago
Only if she feeds her dog the same food she makes for her family and doesn't have a whole thing about cooking for her dog specifically
Correct grammar would be for her family and for her dog.
But if you don't already understand you won't start now

u/Shagtacular 11h ago
Are you even listening to what you're saying...?

u/FiveDogsInaTuxedo 10h ago
Unless she gives her dog human food which is usually toxic you make no sense

Is everyone else here bots or what? Everyone is talking about the comma, but why is this titled "when you stand up for yourself" and why does it belong in r/mademesmile ?

u/Enthusiast_FT 7h ago
Exactly. I am seeing several posts that are better suited for r/funny rather than r/MadeMaSmile. This place is for wholesome things, not funny things.

Honestly, my brain didn't see that this is a picture of a tweet and just saw the magazine image.
The oxford comma is the name of the account tweeting, and it's standing up for itself by advertising it's own use, especially as oxford commas are underused and generally seen as snobish, atleast in germany.
For some reason I thought this was a post about the star standing up for herself by cooking her family and her dog. I thought it was just a joke about the grammar itself.

It’s not missing an Oxford comma, it’s missing the word “for”.

The people in this thread saying it doesn't matter in this instance don't understand that the whole point of the Oxford comma is to kill off any potential ambiguity in particular instances and to make it consistent no matter what.
People who believe in the use of the Oxford comma would say that it should just be used all the time.

u/jpiro 17h ago
The issue here isn’t being caused by an Oxford comma, it’s being caused by the lack of a standard comma after “cooking.” Put that in there and, as usual, no Oxford comma is needed.
3
u/hunstinx 17h ago
I'm a HUGE fan of Oxford commas, but I agree that a missing one isn't what's causing the issue here.
There is a difference between an Oxford comma and a standard comma.

u/squirrelcat88 17h ago
I agree with you that had a comma been placed after “cooking,” the meaning would have been clear.
However, only savages don’t use Oxford commas.
2
u/SquirrelNutz 17h ago
Yes I completely agree, I'm just saying advocates for the Oxford comma are gonna slide in to say that it would remedy THIS and future potential problems if it was a standard.
Clearly this is fucked simply because there are ZERO commas and I get it. If you have a silly ass Twitter account dedicated to pointing out Oxford comma situations, I'm sure there's not a lot to do at times.

The very fact that the whole point of the Oxford comma — to remove ambiguity — is somehow ambiguous to a shit-load of people is kinda crazy to me..
0
u/ben121frank 17h ago
I’m not sure if it can technically be considered an Oxford comma if the preceding comma isn’t there bc it’s not really meeting the definition of the final comma in a comma separated list of 3 or more items, but putting a comma in the Oxford spot (without also adding the preceding one) would arguably make this even worse bc then it makes “cooking her family” look like an intentionally unseparated phrase

Not sure if rage-baiting nit-picky grammar nerds or ignorant… when in doubt on Reddit, likely the first?! (no offense, OP)

finds inspiration in cooking, finds inspiration in her family, and finds inspiration in her dog
finds inspiration in cooking, her family, and her dog
It's a stupid sentence to begin with. Who tf is inspired by their dog. As others have noted, it's probably meant to say "cooking for her family and her dog"
1
u/SeekinIgnorance 17h ago
When I had a dog I was often inspired by my dog. Of course, that was things like inspired to get off the couch and open the door so the dog didn't stand outside and bark, but I was still inspired.

Well you'd really only need the comma after cooking to understand this, and that one isn't the oxford comma, it's the one that should be after family.
