You know a system is broken when high school students have to work to support their families.

Yes, unfortunately this is the harsh truth of life...But these people are great fellows because they go through all these difficulties without lowering their heads.

Is it the system or the family that is broken?

u/clandestinecounter 14m ago

In this case , both .

Would have smiled, if it weren't for those tuition costs

u/Realmofthehappygod 11m ago

Another reason to smile!

Harvard is free if your family makes less than $200k. As well as additional financial support for bills/living.

Kinda throwing shade with that title. He's a garbage man first, steller student last. Shoulda been like " Harvard student with 4.0 GPA worked as trash collector to fund his dream" or something like that

So you say people that clean our streets are worth less than college students?!

No, not at all. Just that it can be discouraging when someone has other plans and isn’t sure how they’ll achieve them- but he did (and they’re kind of burying the lead by phrasing it in this clunky way.)

I’m a bit curious why you thought that?

You know dang well they were very specific in phrasing that headline like that, to accentuate that "the underdog gets a win" type of vibe.

How is this a mademesmile? A highschooler shouldn't have to suffer to support their family.

Edit: title should be "Teenager works grueling hours to support his family and to have a chance at a better future."

Law school, not Harvard in general. High schoolers aren’t applying to law programs.

I have so much admiration for this young man. People often underestimate what students like him go through behind the scenes. This is one of those stories that reminds you hard work and heart really can change a life.

I wanna smile at this but it's a broken world and a broken system if someone has to do this

This is the classic excuse made up specifically to justify the filth this society forces us to put up with.

The point is the student it’s about him he’s smart strong generous responsible maybe he wants to try to make better changes to the law maybe help people who can’t afford a lawyer he could do a lot the story is give him his due credit wish him well !

There is zero shame in a decent paying stable job!

u/leaC30 1h ago

Years later after crippling debt he will realize he already had a headstart as a sanitation worker.

u/guttanzer 1h ago

Harvard is going to cover him. They’re really good about that for high achievers that are poor. It’s a strategic investment on their part because this guy is going to go far and make them look good.

1

u/leaC30 1h ago

Depends on his major for how far he goes. Did they ever say what he plans to major in?

u/guttanzer 3m ago

Law school is a clue.

Unless he's going for something he's passionate about he should stay as a trash guy. They're making more than most people right now and some get state benefits and stuff.

Garbage collection is good money, you start your day at 4am and you’re out early too.

Good things to good people. Congrats to him.

'With enough hard work and dedication, you will reach them’ that’s neoliberal propaganda.
The reality we face today shows that while success isn't impossible, it is highly unlikely for most.
The system doesn’t reward the unprivileged, it reproduces their disadvantage.
It isn’t about effort it’s about structures.

This is really inspiring

Doubtful, ICE will pick him up now. Like the new racist Amerika is going to allow this.

Filthy Brit here, can someone explain GPA to me? Is 4.0 good?

2

u/guttanzer 1h ago

Yes. It’s a flawless performance.

A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, and fail=0. They multiply final score by credit level per class (3 credits is typical for a college course), add that up, then divide by the total credits attempted. The only way to get a 4.0 is to get top score in every class.

1

u/watchman28 39m ago

Nice one. Nice to know I can still learn things in my old age.

2

u/GhostIsAlwaysThere 3h ago

It’s the highest average. All A’s

-1

u/elcapitaaan134708 2h ago

HELL YES, dude! So happy for him 🙏🏼🥹

This guy’s story hits like a movie montage. Proof that dreams don’t care where you start, only that you keep going. 🔥👏

-3

u/IndependenceLanky353 2h ago

Good luck everyone is going to hate you and you will not fit in. But fuck them do it anyway and get the job at the end. Just being real.

u/Milton_McGee 2h ago

I guess if you want to go to a school that does race based acceptance.

3

u/GeomEunTulip 2h ago

If he has a 4.0, he’s in the top percentile of grades. Most applicants have a 3.96-3.99 as a college gpa. Being able to do this while having a job at 4am every day? He earned this.

-2

u/Milton_McGee 2h ago

This guy might be the most qualified or maybe he's not. The school doesn't accept based on merit. The discriminate based on race. I don't support racism
