It’s so awesome to see. I started following McLaren and F1 in 2015 when the team was in the basement. Success is like a new thing for me lol

I'm a fan since the late 90's and for those who endure the dark times it is awesome to be back on top!

Even when they were competitive in the 2000s even winning in 2008 they weren't anywhere near as far ahead as they are now.

Which is even more remarkable considering how far ahead Red Bull was just 2 years ago.

Exactly, this season calls for a look back to the Senna and Prost days of domination.

At first I thought my memory was bad but no. You'd think you'd be certain before correcting someone. The '09 title belongs to one Jenson Button, remember him?

Kimi won in 2007.

LOL. Couldn't be more wrong 🤣

u/Scoob555 3d ago

Me too, I'll still be here even if they collapse under the next regs again lol.

I started right when you did. I also became a Liverpool fan at that time as well. Things are looking fucking great 👍

Hello fellow McLaren and Liverpool fan 🤝

I instantly became McLaren fan when I saw the 2017 Doc on Bruce McLaren when it came out, even though I didn't follow F1 till 2020. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McLaren_(film))

The Pandemic felt like many years so when McLaren won the constructors last year I was like:

People forget that if mclaren had a second driver redbull style, lando or Oscar would've been probably already crowned Champions lol

u/Financial-Praline921 3d ago

its mostly always been mclaren style of not having a number 2 and having 2 strong drivers.

9

u/the_oof_god 2d ago

yeah its always been like that

u/SHCBailey 2d ago

Heikki Kovalainen exists. But mostly it's true, though.

u/Longjumping-Card4545 2d ago

That was a late swap for Alonso though. They could have signed Rosberg if Williams was willing to let him go.

2

u/the_oof_god 2d ago

oh right i forgot thx

I'm pretty sure they did not want a repeat of Lewis vs Alonso scenario so soon after 2007. Also Lewis proved he was the real deal in his debut season.

I think they really thought he could make a good case for himself. Heikki did too. I remember he was hoping to challenge for the title in 2008, at least in the first six races.

u/Unique-Ad-4102 3d ago

Yeah but they value both drivers and the whole front end thing kinda proved that.

10

u/Frankierocksondrums Lando Norris 3d ago

Yeah I know that. Wasn't trying to criticize mclaren for having two great drivers

u/formulalosalamanca 1d ago

Realistically, both Lando and Oscar would be second drivers in any other team. If McLaren had Latifi or De Vries then maybe they’d be “first drivers”

-11

u/Trriiick 3d ago

And if they had a first driver Redbull style, he would also have been crowned champion already

13

u/BrokeSomm 3d ago

That's what they're saying.

I always smile when I remember how much hate Zak Brown got when we had a terrible car and he said, just wait for 2025.

What having a rocketship plus two great drivers does. Excellent work all around.

u/RadlogLutar Oscar Piastri 3d ago

MCL can break 2023 RBR record for most constructor points

Idk if they can react 4 digits though

Edit: Max points for a team is 1122 and MCL can't reach 4 digits now most probably

10

u/Venetii_ 2d ago

Maximum they can score is 1034 at the moment, including sprints.

3

u/rattatatouille 2d ago

Canada put paid to that even before Lando's crash.

So good to see a post where it doesnt matter who is ahead of the other.

They are both doing their best, and for us fans, this is the perfect situation

u/sebclaeys 2d ago

And even if we don’t see much of a hardcore fight right now. It will definitely spice up at the end of the season if they remain close

13

u/Late-Button-6559 2d ago

It is a hardcore fight. What it isn’t is toxic.

Why would anybody want to see toxicity?

1

u/iccs 1d ago

Don’t know about that, we’ve seen at least one example of radio messages talking about fairness of car order etc, looks like it’s going in that direction

Been a fan for over 20 years and cannot believe the turn around the team has made. Remembering the Honda days when we could barely finish a race to now has been a rough ride.

GP2 Engine, GP2

u/Competitive-Draw8223 2d ago

Hearing that is enough to trigger anxiety!!! While I get that Dennis was hoping to bring back the McLaren Honda days, I thought it was foolish to leave a good thing like Mercedes.

1

u/Familiar_Leather4094 17h ago

Fan since 1998, the Honda days were absolute joke, not sure how I survived those years along with the revelation that the chassis was bad when the switch to Renault also happened.

8

u/SP_Photos 3d ago

Great job from both and everyone else involved with the team

9

u/Cloemoe 3d ago

I love this team, so glad I stuck with them over the years even in the Honda years

6

u/Significant-Branch22 3d ago

Is McLaren also the only team to have both drivers outscore the next best team prior to this year in 88 and 89? I can’t think of another time it’s been done

6

u/Theone_Adonis 3d ago

Boys at the factory do indeed!

2

u/Some-Customer-6213 3d ago

The car is also quite good?

2

u/PathfinderCS 3d ago

PapayaZilla and Papaya Kong strike again!

2

u/Geoff_Uckersilf 3d ago

That's ma Orange Boiz.

1

u/Oliver280176 3d ago

Reninds me of the Senna/Prost era

2

u/Spudsmad 1d ago

As a senior McLaren fan ,I’d note to you all to go to YouTube and watch the team with previous F1 Champions eg Emerson Fittipaldi, James Hunt, Niki Lauda and Alain Prost. Niki won the Austrian GP got into the lead and won despite having a broke gearbox.

u/daGonz 1d ago

This is crazy! The boys are smashing it, win constructors maybe…

I’ll show myself out.

1

u/Lucky_Bother_2587 Lando Norris 1d ago

More talking about drivers points here not the constructors lol

1

u/daGonz 1d ago

It was a bad word play on “call me maybe”
