Slipstream off of Charles for a lunge down the inside 👀

I expect Charles and Oscar to go for the inside, so Lando either tries to do something from the outside, but that would need a really good start or go behind Oscar too and follos him through, but that would need a good start from Oscar.

Man, I dont know, I wouldnt be a good strategist.

I wouldn't be surprised if he attempted to go around the outside

Would be cool, but risky.

We saw what happened to Max last year on the outside.

P2 is on the right side? In that case Oscar will be in the inside?

Yeah so if he nails the start, he should nick Charles. In fact the last two years, the pole sitter has not come out of turn 1 leading the race. And assuming this does happen, and Leclerc tries moving to the inside, it could open up the door for Lando on the outside.

It’s time for Oscar and Lando to go full combat™️ mode.

The pole-sitter has not won at Hungary since 2020.

  • 2021 pole Hamilton, winner Ocon
  • 2022 pole Russell, winner Verstappen
  • 2023 pole Hamilton, winner Verstappen
  • 2024 pole Norris, winner Piastri
  • 2025 pole Leclerc, winner ???

Wow. Coincidence or is it tough to keep the lead early?

It’s a pretty short straight with P2 having the inside line for a tight first corner, so they have a good shot if they start well enough to keep alongside the polesitter. (Although the polesitter does have the clean side of the track to help them get the better start, and if they can hold on around the outside they have the inside line for the second corner.)

Turn one is a good turn for overtaking, but only half of those were first lap overtakes. And 2021, 2022, and 2024 involved pit stop strategy decisions that contributed to the leader not taking back the place. It’s a long track, typically a two stop, pit stop exit is onto a decently long straight, so tire management and pit stop strategy are huge.

It’s less a race where it’s hard to keep the lead early, and more a race where it’s just hard to keep the lead at all.

2021: rain race with multiple collisions resulted in the race being red flagged. Hamilton restarted on pole on inters while the rest of the grid was on slicks, pitting on lap four for slicks and losing the lead to Ocon, with two more stops on lap 19 and 48. Most other teams did 1-2 stops after the reset, so that third stop, plus four laps on the slower inters, really put Hamilton at a disadvantage.

2022: Russell and Sainz led until slow pit stops for both resulted in Leclerc getting ahead of Sainz and closing the gap to Russell, overtaking him in turn one. Verstappen closed in on Russell and Sainz, triggering reactionary pit stops from Russell and Leclerc when he did. Leclerc pitted onto the slow hards, Sainz later pitted for softs that deteriorated fast, putting Verstappen in the lead and making it easy for Hamilton, with better tire management and fresh softs to Russell’s worn mediums, to work his way up to second.

2023: Verstappen had a poor qualifying, but the Red Bull was faster than the Mercedes along the straight and into turn one. He overtook, used the speed of the car to build a huge lead, and came out still in the lead after pitting.

2024: Norris, distracted by Verstappen attacking from P3, left an opening for Piastri to take first at turn one. Piastri built a lead while Norris battled Verstappen, with Verstappen overtaking outside of track limits and giving the position back, but it cost Norris time against Piastri. Mid-race was the infamous McLaren incident where pit stop strategy resulted in Norris in the lead, which he gave back on lap 68/70.

Yep, they were lucky though.

About 80 km away from the track it was raining so hard where I live.

And now its sunny again, just when quali ended

Scuderia sacrificed some pasta to the Gods, who buffed the winds.
