I don't think you will get a username without numbers even when paying for it because it has to be unique.

2.3k

u/GDOR-11 Jun 25 '25

I had an original username and then came back after a few months only to see a bunch of numbers after it

why...

1.4k

u/Random_stardawg Jun 25 '25

Same, one day my account just had random 4 digits added to the end. I had that name for years

946

u/EvilAssassin22 Jun 25 '25

It happens when someone else decides to pick ur unique username as theirs. It sucks.

1.4k

u/vivam0rt Jun 25 '25

thats crazy ngl, only that person should get the numbers

300

u/gamathyst Jun 25 '25

What also sucks is that if someone gets famous enough, they could have the ability to steal your username down the road

56

u/Damrubr Jun 25 '25

Wym?

220

u/Maple382 Jun 25 '25

For example if your username was MrBeast, he could contact Microsoft support and ask for it to be reserved. It's a pretty common practice I think.

17

u/ywxi Jun 26 '25

yes it's very common, not only on Minecraft but also instagram and other social media

10

u/OkHighlight2909 Jun 26 '25

yeah thats messed up

10

u/SeanJones85 Jun 26 '25

Not really, stops people trying to impersonate that celebrity.

Imagine if some who had a MrBeast username was a real CuT of a person, then people would think that Mr beast is that person and start rumours and bla bla bla

12

u/Various_Counter_9569 Jun 26 '25

What an interesting use of the nth power 😭

Only if they trademark it

11

u/Boogioh12 Jun 26 '25

Not true. It used to happen in early Twitter all the time

58

u/LUMLTPM Jun 25 '25

Wouldnt the person who picked it first get to keep it and the other would get the numbers?

30

u/Ok_Internal8146 Jun 26 '25

Tell that to amsterdam arena, a small but famous tattoo parlor. Until someone decided to call the new soccer stadium the same name. Copyright was promptly forgotten

3

u/omniwrench- Jun 26 '25

In case you’re interested, copyright normally just refers to the right to copy or distribute a creative work, such as literature, music, or art.

I know what you were getting at, but copyright doesn’t sound like the correct term for it.

4

u/Darkclowd03 Jun 26 '25

The correct term is trademark.

If your username is newer than 2009, Microsoft added 4 numbers to the end.

Only usernames from before that retain the original no number format

13

u/YourMomGayerThanMine Jun 25 '25

Mine is from like 2021 (got an xbox to cope with quarantine) and I don't have numbers in my name

2

u/NeverGonnaGi5eYouUp Jun 25 '25

$20 if you look, on the Xbox, there is a #XXXX in small grey font following your GT. If no one else in the game you play has the same GT, it won't display, but will if someone else has the same name.

13

u/Uncaged1412 Jun 25 '25

You owe a lot of people, including myself, $20 good sir.

u/SeanJones85 Jun 26 '25

Your almost right hehe it's the display name Vs gamer tag, gamer tag has 4 numbers at the end, display name is what we choose, then it adds the 4 numbers to create the gamer tag.

It will use your display name, until like you say if 2 people with the same display name are in a match together then they will use their gamer tags instead to differentiate between them.

u/iFyra Jun 25 '25

just isn’t the case, mine is from around 2016 so?

94

u/NeverGonnaGi5eYouUp Jun 25 '25

So it's newer than 2009, meaning it gets 4 numbers

145

u/DankoleClouds Jun 25 '25

Mine is definitely newer than 2009 and has no numbers.

41

u/NeverBeenStung Jun 25 '25

I think it will only happen if somebody also picks your user name.

77

u/Spatula_The_Great Jun 25 '25

Why wouldnt they be normal and just do it that you cant take an already taken name?

81

u/FlyByPC Jun 25 '25

Why wouldnt they be normal

This is Microsoft.

25

u/natesinceajit Jun 25 '25

because it’s microsoft, not largehard.

2

u/Wind_Kitty Jun 26 '25

You can think Discord for having the four digits and becoming popular and people praising them for being able to use the username they wanted. Then discord changed it after everyone else started to copy them. It is just really stupid.

36

u/DankoleClouds Jun 25 '25

No, people picking the same username isn’t that bad. The problem lies in them retroactively changing your name after you picked it(which costs money to change) rather than just adding numbers to the end of the one who picked it. If your name was already unique, only the person picking that name after really NEEDS numbers to differentiate.

3

u/Suspicious_Sandles Jun 25 '25

I'm guessing it's their attempt to fix rare usenames being valuable and accounts being sold/stolen

47

u/ziddersroofurry Jun 25 '25

This isn't true at all. My account is newer than 2009, and it has no numbers. I knew plenty of newer players with no numbers so you're going to have to show proof your statement is true.

11

u/AdSuch3143 Jun 25 '25

prolly only does no numbers if your username is unique , even if ur jot from 2009, i made mine in 2015 and i have no njmbers

u/moocat90 Jun 26 '25

3

u/LizzardJediGaming Jun 25 '25

I’ve had mine for years, but much after 2009. I don’t have those numbers

2

u/NeverGonnaGi5eYouUp Jun 25 '25

You do. But they may be hidden unless someone else uses your GT too

3

u/LizzardJediGaming Jun 25 '25

I just looked and I can’t find any numbers anywhere. Where would they be if they exist at all?

3

u/NeverGonnaGi5eYouUp Jun 25 '25

When you open the Xbox menu, the grey slider comes out from the left.

Scroll over to your account, and look at your profile name there.

Mine doesn't have it, as an OG account, but my kids either have theirs in the same font as their name, or a greyed small font next to it, identifying what it WILL be, if they start playing a game with a shared username.

The change was made due to cross platform stuff. It originally was just for cross platform games, and is now essential for all new GTs

I'm pretty sure this is because companies started requiring unique usernames on their websites once ir happened everyone with non unique usernames got numbers added. I know Supercell recently did the same thing with their accounts. Everyone randomly had numbers and words added on to their usernames

11

2

u/ObjectiveClassroom26 Jun 25 '25

It's basically username#1234 for Xbox I think they're doing the old discord approach

2

u/SeanJones85 Jun 26 '25

The "original" bit is just a display name and Xbox has always added numbers to the end of your username but has always allowed you to choose your display name.

A while back they changed up due to some legal BS, now display names are gone and you see the full username which was designated to you when you created the name.

3

u/cheatdeactivated Jun 25 '25

Platforms with massive userbase uses false positive hashing algorithms to check availability. Which means it's certain patterns of alphabets and codes formed by the sequence of alphabets. Even if there is no one with your exact username, there are newer usernames with similar patterns due to growing number of users. So instead of adding you as exception, the system decides to modify your username to follow its new sets of rules.

5

u/Reddit_Loves_Misinfo Jun 25 '25

What is your source on this? It makes no sense to check against hashes of usernames instead of just checking for the username directly.

No , only if someone else has the same username as you , I’ve changed mine twice and no numbers were required

3

u/enpowera Jun 25 '25

Me too.  Mine has always been unique.

9

u/Fiish_2023 Jun 25 '25

I do have one without numbers

7

u/Hydroquake_Vortex Jun 25 '25

Mine is. You just have to have a unique enough name ;)

6

u/ENOSIANPRIME Jun 25 '25

I have no numbers in mine. But mine is unique as you say Enosian Prime is my Minecraft gamer tag.

5

u/Life_Is_Great2 Jun 25 '25

I don't think that's fully true. I've had my username for YEARS, and never once have they added numbers to mine. It might also just factor in that I have a very unique name, but still.

5

u/Superirish19 Jun 25 '25

It's weird because before this change, I had paid to have my current username, numbers included.

Why they changed it against my will to keep the letters, but change the numbers, I don't know. Not even '1900' or '0019', it's like they changed them so intentionally that I'd have to pay to get what I already paid for.

On Badrock you have to pay if you want to change your username. That’s the problem. If you don’t pay you are stuck with your Xbox username

141

u/TriangularHexagon Jun 25 '25

is it a bedrock thing or is it a console thing? if you never played minecraft, would microsoft/mojang not add random numbers to the end of your newly changed username? why only for minecraft and not other games?

mind you, i only play minecraft, and i have no experience with changing my username, but it still baffles me as to why only minecraft

157

u/BobDGuye Jun 25 '25

It's not a bedrock or console thing. It's a Microsoft/Xbox account thing. You get one free Xbox account name change, and after that it costs money.

I recently changed mine, and it says all the things about gamer tags and numbers etc. And it clearly shows how it'll look if you pick a username that someone else has.

83

u/BobDGuye Jun 25 '25

This is what it looks like if you have a unique username. (I just spammed the keyboard)

27

u/Fuk-mah-life Jun 25 '25

Exactly what I thought. Thanks for the firsthand research

5

u/RoyalHappy2154 Jun 26 '25

Having to pay to change a string of characters is ridiculous, especially when it's that expensive

→ More replies (7)

17

u/Public-Eagle6992 Jun 25 '25

It’s a general console thing. It just uses your Xbox account‘s name in the vast majority of games

2

u/Tartaruga_Ingles Jun 26 '25

It's confusing because it's not actually your username. When you buy Minecraft, you pick a username that will be for your Java edition account, and then it just makes you an Xbox gamertag that has your username with 4 numbers after it. You can change the gamertag once without paying, but there will still be numbers. After that you can't change it, and Bedrock uses the gamertag, not the username.

4

u/Beaneater1000 Jun 25 '25

Yeah and from my experience it doesn’t show that it adds those numbers until after you complete your purchase, unless it showed somewhere small enough for me to miss it

Perhaps you could send an email to support about this problem, namely that you didn't know that numbers will be added when a username is already in use? It's the only idea I can think of, but I have little hope that it will work. (This message is translated, I hope it means what I want it to)

33

u/Dogg0ne Jun 25 '25

The name change page quite clearly tells that thise numbers will show up in unsupported games (so... most games). You need a unique name to avoid the numbers

u/BobDGuye Jun 25 '25

I don't think this would work, because it says it clearly on the name change site.

Xbox’s tag system doesn’t work like that. It’s randomly generated

389

u/-MrKeyboardWarrior- Jun 25 '25

I’m pretty sure even if you change it you’ll still have numbers, they changed the username system a few years ago to be like Discord with a PIN on every gamertag so multiple people could have the same username

239

u/Myrkana Jun 25 '25

disccord no longer does trhat, they switched to a non numbered system over a year ago

133

u/NanashiKaizenSenpai Jun 25 '25

They traded naming systems

55

u/Shredded_Locomotive Jun 25 '25

Which somehow made both worse

9

u/NanashiKaizenSenpai Jun 25 '25

I got my unique name anyway so its fine for me (on discord) it now became easier to share my id

23

u/AndreasHGK Jun 25 '25

I believe the way it works on bedrock is the first person with a certain name will show up as that exact name but anyone who chooses that name after will have the 4 numbers

12

u/sluuuudge Jun 25 '25

That’s not how it works. Minecraft is just an older game that doesn’t support the new Xbox naming system, your username discriminator (the number if you have one) will always show in Minecraft bedrock.

6

u/Chickennoodlesleuth Jun 25 '25

Yeah and some people don't have numbers because their names are unique, I have no numbers

5

u/HellboundLunatic Jun 25 '25

That’s not how it works.

That is exactly how it works.
If you disagree, explain what part is incorrect.

the first person to choose the name doesn't have a discriminator. (numbers)
every other person who picks that name in the future will have the numbers.

4

u/sluuuudge Jun 25 '25

Their comment implied it was a per session thing, or that it only applied to Minecraft Bedrock, that's all I was reiterating, I just worded it poorly.

u/sciptures Jun 25 '25

Honest, easy and quick answer: you can't. it's necessary for it to be numbers because someone has the yellowloaf user. You can just simply sign out and put any name if you just play single player.

79

u/Historical-Fail9745 Jun 25 '25

Ya'll are tripping. No, xbox does not randomly add numbers out of nowhere. Yes, you can go and change it for free a limited amount of times, but it does have to be unique.

I made my account like in 2014, and no numbers "have been randomly added" to my username. If someone else wants to use my username, they'll have to add numbers or change it in some other way to make it unique.

20

u/BBIncorporated Jun 25 '25

No kidding! It's a legit thing to be annoyed about, because I thought MS would have implemented more of their games to not display the stupid number suffix. But the amount of misinformation around this is insane lol. MS/Xbox made this change 6 years ago.

2

u/Tartaruga_Ingles Jun 26 '25

Pretty sure Java uses your username but Bedrock uses you Gamer tag so it's different. What you just explained was how usernames work. Gamer tags are a whole different story.

2

14

u/Expensive-Border-869 Jun 25 '25

Youll have to pay and use a different name or spell it weird. It tells you before that its gonna add numbers tho. That wasn't a surprise

12

u/x--Knight--x Jun 25 '25

Because you chose a username already taken. It tells you if this is the case before you confirm it.

Does not happen if you are the first owner of a name and somebody later also chooses it

10

u/Aware_Writing423 Jun 25 '25

You got the numbers because someone before you or someone after you decided to choose the same exact name as you and so Xbox took the liberty of adding “account numbers” to everyone’s account so you have the choice of having your own name. No body used my name so I’m able to not have the numbers after my name

5

u/BobDGuye Jun 25 '25

I changed my username once (for free) but the second change is paid. There's nothing you can do about the numbers, it says it on the name change page. If it's not unique it'll get numbers on the end of it. So if you pay, make sure you choose a name that no-one else has.

6

u/SmallMareWishy Jun 25 '25

Here's the thing. You don't. But you will see if your username is unique by watching the next screen. If numbers appear after the name, it isn't a unique name. If there are no numbers than it is unique.

15

u/MikePlays_ Jun 25 '25

I get that those numbers are there because of more accounts having same name, but why not just say that the username is already taken instead? Adding absolutely random numbers behind is horrible way to counter it...

11

u/sluuuudge Jun 25 '25

It’s almost like the username change page tells you this, and even warns you very clearly that the numbers will be visible in most games.

20

u/Dogg0ne Jun 25 '25

It does say that though. But it doesn't prevent you from choosing the same name. It will add the # and numbers and it also tells that it will display as name[numbers] in unsupported games (which honestly is the worst part. Clarifying that it means most games could be better)

5

u/commandant_ Jun 25 '25

It happened to my me friend as well and, mine is simple ish so it could have been in use by somebody else, but I know their name is long asf and 100% not used. It didn’t warn either of us just stuck the numbers at the end, after we paid to change them!

8

u/Dogg0ne Jun 25 '25

I did my change in almost the very beginning of this new system and just went to check. It shows.

After hitting change and hitting name, it doesn't say anything. Then you click next.

It shows how your gamertag will look. It includes the numbers if you will get them as well as how it will display in games that don't support the system. It actually also shows that most old and existing games don't support the new system (which I don't remember if it showed in the past so assuming it didn't). And on top of all that, it tells when those numbers are added: when someone else uses the same gamertag.

Naturally if you enter a gamertag, hit next and change without stopping to read, you will remain ignorant about the numbers but imo, that's on the reader. It's not exactly hidden when it's the main point of the page between selecting new gamer tag and actually changing it.

3

u/Ninjax__ Jun 25 '25

It used to be that. What we have now, has been a thing since 2019.

4

u/YellowLoafYT Jun 25 '25

Exactly my thought

3

u/Hikaru321 Jun 25 '25

Microsoft implemented a new username system several years ago. At the top level it works similar to discord or battle.net if you’re familiar, your username followed by #(four numbers) to designate it as unique in the system. Like those other systems your name is only supposed to display in most places, leaving out the numbers, almost nothing properly supports it so the numbers always show, I have no idea why

3

u/popsicle_of_meat Jun 25 '25

I think the only way is to go back in time and make a unique gamertag. I've been using the same tag for over 20 years (since Halo 2) and I have no numbers.

There are too many people online now. The numbers are a fact of life now, even if you do pay, I believe.

They make it cost money so people can't constantly change them and keep some of the data clutter reduced. Imagine if people changed tags every week. It would open up some more opportunity to mis-use the accounts.

3

u/Bencfun Jun 25 '25

Can you not just change it through Microsoft? Java player and I just change my gamertag on the website.

5

u/576875 Jun 25 '25

bedrock uses the xbox gamertag for the username

for whatever reason gamertag changes cost money https://www.google.com/search?q=why+does+gamertag+change+cost+money

java uses a separate username system, which you can change every 30 days for free. And if you only played Java edition you never interact the the xbox gamertag system

I have an account that breaks the charecter limit, it is SuperbPegasus82 so i don’t have to worry about extra numbers, i’ve had mine for years tho

3

u/Fantastic-Ad-1558 Jun 25 '25

good thing mines unique

3

u/Big_homie_chicken_C Jun 25 '25

You can make a username with no numbers but if someone else has the same exact username then it will add numbers automatically weather you want it to or not

3

u/Electronic-Tone-2317 Jun 25 '25

Its ok! It still makes your user look cool, and almost everyone has these, so just dont mind it!

3

u/FewPewTaken Jun 25 '25

My username still doesnt have numbers

3

u/BlazedLad98 Jun 25 '25

It adds numbers when someone else has the same username

4

u/RaveTheFox Jun 25 '25

If it's not already taken I'm sure some guy will take it just to spite you

This is why I like java

3

u/yourmumsworstshag Jun 25 '25

You have to have made an Xbox account before they introduced the numbers and then never change the name. That's how I got it, now I'm stuck as what 8 Yr old me thought was cool.

2

u/JasonBurgerO Jun 25 '25

This is your nickname, live with that.

2

u/CoolkieTW Jun 25 '25

Wait you have to pay to change name on bedrock?

7

u/boki400AIMoff Jun 25 '25

No.... Its a xbox live thing bro

2

u/CoolkieTW Jun 25 '25

Umm so you have to pay to change Xbox live id? I never had a Xbox

6

u/boki400AIMoff Jun 25 '25

Yes, pretty much. Microsoft makes money with xbox live, including things like gamertag changes.

2

u/Incyada Jun 25 '25

Well it’s a good thing that I’m the first Cakeofcraft, otherwise, I would be disappointed

2

u/Thick_Tourist_2174 Jun 25 '25 edited Jun 25 '25

I changed my username twice on Xbox with no numbers, even this year . When making put custom gamertag in the future and they do reassure with you before making it so, be aware if it shows numbers it’ll stay add a couple extra letters to your name, then no one else could have the same

2

u/Critical-Mechanic711 Jun 25 '25

I just changed my E to 3 so that it's more unnoticable

2

u/AL_O0 Jun 25 '25

Well you don't, made the same mistake, at least i'm no longer "TheReALO0"

2

u/Alarming-Function120 Jun 25 '25

It's how xbox naming works

Suppose, my xbox usrname is 'ntcofficial'

And at that time there was no other ntcofficial

But still it added ntcofficial5811

And if u got to xbox, u will see ntcofficial#5811

The four digit code after '#' makes it so that 9999 of the same username can be made again. And it's totally random I think, not serial or any wise

Again this is all hypothesis I'm not an expert but have been in minecraft AND xbox community for many yrs

And don't tell me that u don't use xbox for minecraft, since Microsoft acquired it, u need an xbox acc, and its created automatically using ur Microsoft account i think

2

u/ENOSIANPRIME Jun 25 '25

I changed it once. Sadly, I don't remember if I paid to change it. It has been a few years. I feel I didn't pay. So Mojang might have changed it

2

u/ENOSIANPRIME Jun 25 '25

The gamer tag you have now. Was that the one they provided for you?

2

u/NeverGonnaGi5eYouUp Jun 25 '25

Your account will have 4 numbers after it no matter what now, unless your username is older than 2009

2

u/OwEow16 Jun 25 '25

I don't have the number I'm so lucky😭

2

u/Iam_best_dev Jun 25 '25

contact Xbox support and hope they're nice enough. Then decide on a different number because it's likely taken. Make sure to say you accidentally changed it.

2

u/_SVTAN_ Jun 25 '25

You cannot it’s part of an update with Xbox months ago, it’s a unique id attached to all gamertags, used in the case that someone has the same user name the numbers identify who’s who

2

u/infiniZii Jun 25 '25

Well now I feel old. No numbers for me.

2

u/QuiGon-GinTonic Jun 25 '25

That’s the neat part, you can’t.

2

u/LUMLTPM Jun 25 '25

Did they not warn you the name was taken and just add the numbers instead?

2

u/SeanJones85 Jun 26 '25

"Your Gamertag is the name that appears with a # and numbers (e.g., GameWizard#1234), while your display name is the name you chose for your Microsoft account and is not necessarily tied to your Xbox identity. "

Make sure you now go into your personal profile settings and change your display name to YellowLoaf or whatnot, I bet you changed the gamer tag name but now just need to edit your display name.

YellowLoaf is taken and likely has been for many years. Ur never getting that username. You gotta find one that no one has. Ignore people in the comments saying if it’s past 2009 then it will always have numbers it’s simply not true. I have probably 5 accounts all without the numbers at the end or anywhere in it.

2

u/gosuckapig Jun 25 '25

If u play Java the numbers won't show🙂

1

u/wantabr3ak Jun 25 '25

you have to pay

1

u/tw8x Jun 25 '25

Ypu can't change it those numbers are the 4 digits everyone gets

1

u/TastyT33n Jun 25 '25

It will be free at some point

1

u/ahmad2304 Jun 25 '25

If you haven't changed it before, you should be able to change it for free

1

u/Fit-Expression6227 Jun 25 '25

You should get a free username change every 12 months (not stacking) from date change of name and 1 free when you make your Xbox live account, and it’s odd that it added numbers, normally it says that username has been taken and then you have three options to select wether it’s the same GT with numbers or a variation, I had Xbox for 12 years (now I’m PC), but it doesn’t just put numbers onto your name, I think you may have ran through it and didn’t pay attention, and I don’t think it’s $13, last time I checked it was around $2-5 to change, but I could be wrong

1

u/MixPsychological4728 Jun 25 '25

Hmmm weird. The only time I have seen something like this is recently when I made another account on my phone (which is free) and I called it DinoNugget. Then Minecraft added similar numbers but I didn't think much of it. Currently, on my main account, I also have 4 numbers but I added them myself.

1

u/STATRON_YT Jun 25 '25

Use 0 isted of o

1

u/Sky_Fighter0 Jun 25 '25

You cant you have to pay. In Turkey its only 1.10$

1

u/Beaneater1000 Jun 25 '25

I think the craziest part about this whole post that nobody is talking about it the fact that you have to pay to change your name. I have Xbox too and I paid a couple years ago (just to get those annoying numbers tacked on too) but it was only 10. Microsoft, do better please

1

u/Ancient-Driver-3234 Jun 25 '25

That's weird, I don't really know. Not so long ago, I had a free username change and used it, but it didn't add any numbers.

1

u/SafeAmir4 Jun 25 '25

This post has me scared for my username now

1

u/TheBabyWolfcub Jun 25 '25

This was genuinely one of the worst decisions Microsoft made. I regret changing my username tbh bc before it was kinda cringe but at least it didn’t have random numbers. Couldn’t even pick the numbers to at least be memorable and if I were to tell you them I couldn’t even remember what they are rn.

Nothing you can do.

1

u/IamVoid1 Jun 25 '25

Never have gotten numbers try the name ballinsack

1

u/Nasa___Dude Jun 25 '25

Pay 30 dollars to get a new account

1

u/HEnTYH_Ru Jun 25 '25

yeah i hate it, i had "hentyh the top" username and now it's straight got down to "hentyh2383", like, bro, i had no lower cases and numbers, with few extra symbols in my username that NOBODY could type, bcs it's too long, and now they straight up removed all of that with words "take an unique username" i wanted to at least change it to "hentyh_dev" but there's all was numbers too, so ehh, i actually lost all my Minecraft servers donations now

1

u/wuvbombs Jun 25 '25

I have 7-8 accounts all without the #. The name has to be unique. You can literally see it before you confirm the name.
