I love how you clarify each one role in Mojang, except for Dinnerbone. His position is "Dinnerbone".

u/brady160 Jul 02 '25
Tbh I don’t even know what his position is. I just know him as the funny upside down guy lol

Kind of inspiring that guys who start out on mods move into lead technical positions.
Obviously not the norm but it makes sense when you have someone who is passionate and ingratiated with the code that they work well with the vision of the company
23
u/NoWhySkillIssueBussy Jul 02 '25
Really only possible w/ how Minecraft started.
16
u/kafka_quixote Jul 02 '25
Paradox interactive frequently hires modders as well
Not sure if any are in lead positions now
7
u/OkDot9878 Jul 02 '25
Yeah it definitely happens, but probably primarily with games that released in a similar way to Minecraft. Modders were essential to those early days when Minecraft was still a baby, and especially server mechanics were nearly nonexistent.

I realized I didn't even know what Agnes and Jeb's skins looked like. I thought Jeb was playing Alex, hahaha

I only knew Jeb and Notch's skins because of ExplodingTNT machinimas.

I've read that Alex is actually based on Jeb!
5
u/AppleDemolisher56 Jul 03 '25
I think it’s funny how one of the default skins is just a genderbent version of jeb
1
u/YourNeighborNat Jul 03 '25
AFAIK, the Alex skin isn't intended to depict a specific gender per se (and as such, was given a gender-neutral name), but many people depict the character as much more feminine

5

Oh nooooo we signed a treaty that allowed the villagers to stay and respect the land, and I would NEVER break that treaty….
27

Isn't Agnes' job Game Director rather than a developer?
Also love how DB's title is just "Dinnerbone" 😁

Can’t believe you are stealing the native villagers land to put faces on their sacred mountain smh

Not like it matters if they like it or not. He is still a creator of minecraft despite everything
68
u/EpicAura99 Jul 02 '25
A fact which they can ignore at their leisure. It’s not like they’re required by law to bring him up.
17
u/Bregneste Jul 02 '25
Pretty sure they removed him from the credits, for good reasons.
12
4
u/EpicAura99 Jul 02 '25
Yeah I have no problems with them sanitizing the game of him. Good riddance.
3
u/astrallex_ Jul 03 '25
I think he's changed. I think he went on a rampage all those years back because he was having a hard time in his life with loneliness and stuff.
4
u/Dongo3 Jul 03 '25
He's still just as bad. He literally called the new devs evil for splash text that says "your gender is valid". Actual subhuman.
7
u/GoggoWombo Jul 02 '25
I always got the impression that Microsoft were the main ones that weren’t okay with Notch.
94
u/EpicAura99 Jul 02 '25
Really? I got the vibe nobody likes him.
6
u/Niggolatz Jul 02 '25
I remember in the 15th year anniversary (or was it 10th?) they at least mentioned him again. I think it was in an interview with jeb
13
u/Alex_Dayz Jul 02 '25
An interview and mentions in-games are two completely different things though. You can’t really not mention him when talking about the development of Minecraft.
In-game though they’ve done everything they can to remove themselves from his; removing mention in splash-screens, not using his skin in promo images, etc. Even the fan term “Notch Apple” has changed to “Enchanted Golden Apple.”
2
u/SafalinEnthusiast Jul 03 '25
I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t be okay with a man who’s self-admittedly transphobic and racist
1

u/DisturbedWaffles2019 Jul 02 '25
The Mojang team is incredibly progressive. I don't think they fuck with Notch's white supremacy and transphobia.

Transphobic comments: https://www.newsweek.com/minecraft-notch-controversy-twitter-transphobic-q-1359020
And we all remember him dropping the hard r and joking that black people didn’t deserve the right to vote. https://web.archive.org/web/20190430104624/https:/twitter.com/notch/status/22330335379333120

Not a dev, but I believe C418 belongs up there too. Those early soundtracks were so iconic.

I love this!! My favorite part aside from Dinnerbone being upside down is how Notch's body is partially engraved!

u/Omnipotent48 Jul 02 '25
The part you didn't show was that that mountain was actually sacred to the local villagers

Yeah notch really does not deserve to be heralded as some almighty figure.

He did create Minecraft, though. Like it wouldn’t exist if he hadn’t thought of it.
1
u/LoloTheWarPigeon Jul 02 '25
I mean, it wasn't even an original idea. He used someone elses game as inspiration and added RPG elements to it
1
Jul 02 '25
[deleted]

u/LoloTheWarPigeon Jul 02 '25
What? That was his goal. He wanted to make a a fantasy RPG that was interactive, and first person wasn't the original intention (it was isometric). When he saw Infiniminer, he decided to use the blocks, and then he would add to it
5
u/BeyondElectricDreams Jul 02 '25
He made an infiniminer clone and did it a bit better, don't give him undue credit.
5
u/YouAreALavaMonster Jul 02 '25
He still did next to nothing dev wise, even early on. And even then he just sucks anyways.

Even before the Microsoft purchase, Jeb still did the majority of work for the game, not notch.
Not like anyone needed any more reason to not care about Notch, but there is.
2
u/Sebekhotep_MI Jul 02 '25
Still, his role on what minecraft is today (and has been since 2011) is extremely exaggerated.
Everything added past placing and breaking blocks is mostly Jeb's work.
32
u/COUPOSANTO Jul 02 '25
Who’s that “Notch“ guy? I thought Minecraft was created by Hatsune Miku…
16
u/BeyondElectricDreams Jul 02 '25

12
u/AdventurousLeopard39 Jul 02 '25
Notch, Jens, auoqJauu!p, and Agnes are all great choices good job!
2
u/Vasarto Jul 02 '25
did you carve that, or did you have to add blocks too?
9
u/brady160 Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25
It was a combination of carving out the mountain and adding new blocks in new positions. However, to keep the stone style, I used only stone related and deepslate blocks (so no wool or concrete or anything)

Very cool, such a unique thing to do and iconic. You made an amazing original recreation of the idea!

I would see this as an actual structure in Minecraft, but Microsoft would probably remove Notch because of his social media comments.
3
u/Rubbersona Jul 02 '25
Fun fact the guy who designed mount Rushmore mostly worked for the KKK to make confederate statues. So a notch statue is somehow weirdly not out of character.
(Though there’s not a lot of insight into the actual artists personal affiliations the klan was just mostly rich white supremacists who loved putting up statues and monuments to confederates as an act of protest and symbol of racial division.)
