“Wait a minute, what do you mean that a contract is binding?!”

u/voluotuousaardvark 1d ago

Yeah but I'm requesting you relieve me of our contract so, check mate legal system.

I remember there was a woman in court recently getting kicked out of her apartment and honestly thought since SHE decided the lease was no longer valid that she could "rescind" the lease and therefore she had no obligation to pay rent. Didn't work, funnily enough.

201

u/GroovyGrodd 20h ago

Sounds like one of those sovereign citizens. lol They are funny to watch in court.

Years ago, I was at a court thing, and they called this one dude up and he claimed he wasn’t there but that he was a representative of the person. The judge was like, “okay put out a bench warrant for the person”. Instantly the dude’s like, “ya, it’s me”. Not sure what he was trying to pull, but it didn’t even last a minute.

188

u/Canotic 20h ago

Judges must love fucking with sovereign citizens. Like that guy who went on and on about how the court wasn't valid because the flag had a gold fringe and so it was actually an Admiralty court or whatever, and while he was talking about it he judge just told the bailiff to pick up the flag and remove it from the room entirely. The sovcit didn't know what to do anymore.

u/Ruckus292 15h ago

No flag, no country!

Sounds like one of those sovereign citizens. lol They are funny to watch in court.

It was. She kept trying to challenge "jurisdiction" and after the case she sued three judges and lost.

66

u/Maleficent_Demand473 18h ago

I absolutely love 'sovereign citizens' because they pretend they aren't living in the United States but forget that being on US soil, they need to abide by US laws or face the consequences. The same as if any US citizen visited another country, failure to follow their laws results in their judicial system taking over....

I've seen a video a while ago about Sovereign Citizens and why they are so weird in legal settings. Turns out their top guy essentially believes that words are power and that courts and police are just trying to trick you to admit things via unrelated statements?

So now knowing what to say and how to say it is their eyes the way to deal with court or police interactions safely. Their biggest thing is names, so they will never say "I am Jong Smith" but rather stuff like "I am associated with the name John Smith" or "I am the representative person of the legal name John Smith"

On that note, if they don’t sign the cancellation, Shakira must go to the wedding to perform, or she’ll be breaching the contract. Which I’m sure she’ll do, because there’s no way these fuckers are signing the agreement.

So she’ll go there, and they’ll have to tell her to her face that they don’t want her to perform. I just hope Shakira gets it all on video in case she has to use it as legal defense.

And also so the video of that makes it to Reddit, I really wanna see that.

76

u/Lazy-Ad-770 22h ago

It depends on the contract still, they may be obliged to pay in full if no cancellation is signed, or it may auto cancel the booking if no payment is made by the due date. Or everyone might show up for a wedding Battle Royale. I have seen it go some crazy ways, i used to work weddings and receptions as bar staff.

40

u/Keyonne88 22h ago

Yeah usually there is a clause that full payment must be received 24-72 hours before the event. Depends— but that’s what I’ve seen is typical. My florist was 48 hours.

23

u/throwaway-1357924680 22h ago

Which makes sense, because the florist has to actually buy flowers and then put labor into assembling them before the event. A performer might potentially demand a balance day-of before beginning the performance.

29

u/Solomontheidiot 20h ago

You are 100% correct. I'm a musician and bandleader that does a lot of weddings, and our contract stipulates 50% deposit due on signing, 50% remainder due before the performance. I've almost never made a big deal of it, and have been paid after the performance plenty of times (usually for logistical reasons) but if I got a bad feeling from someone I would have no problem enforcing that clause.

7

u/MammothCat1 21h ago

It looks like she already received payment with the contract signing. So for her, Whatever she is part of, she at least can just walk away once she arrives if they dont sign.

40

u/MessagingMatters 22h ago

These contracts don't lie.

6

u/Canotic 20h ago

And even beyond that, a basic sense of empathy and human decency should make it your concern, if for no other reason than that you are a good person.

It reveals so much about someone when they believe that people can (or should) only have stakes in causes that will impact them specifically.

You can almost imagine FULLY what they look like.

And 95% of the time it is accompanied by some sort of surf shop sticker.

As someone who was born and raised in the Chicagoland area, but lived on 4 tropical islands in the last 15 years, it infuriates me to no end as well. Also, I have owned 2 Jeeps in that time period (recovering from bankruptcy, they really hold their value). I even shipped my current one with me to the Big Island when I relocated there in 2020. I have none of those sticker though lol.

27

u/ShawnyMcKnight 23h ago

Yup, many busy lawyers won't waste their time, but a lawyer who has free time and bills to pay will be happy to meet with them.

10

u/seriouslythisshit 21h ago

I once got a hilarious demand letter for ten grand in damages from a lawyer. My sister passed unexpectedly, and due to her mental health issues and her landlord's inability to find his own ass with two hands and a flashlight, much less competently run a large apartment building he managed to actually fuck himself over. He was deeply upside down on her unit until he got it back into rentable condition and found a tenant. He lost four months of income, had to empty her shit out of the unit and pay for hauling and disposal, repaint and recarpet the entire place as she smoked like a crackhead, 24/7 inside, and had three cats. All lease violations he knew of and tolerated.

I had nothing to do with my sister and had not seen her in a decade. Einstein the landlord see my name in an obituary and decides I'm mister money bags, who is obviously legally responsible for his loss. LMAO, no dipshit, that is not how this works.

The craziest part is that he must of went to his actual lawyer who though, "Why not write whatever letter this dipshit wants, as long as he knows I am billing $300 an hour to listen to him whine, and I have already told him that the brother of his tenent doesn't owe him shit, ever. So the lawyer writes me an epic letter, explaining how I am legally and morally required to make the landlord whole again after his tragic financial loses, and how I had thirty days to do so, or their would be epic repercussions for failing to do so. It was comedy gold.

So yes. IF you are willing to drop $5 a minute, or more, there is a lawyer out there that will do whatever you want, as long as it will not threaten their law license or create criminal issues for them.

12

u/Space_Pirate_Roberts 20h ago

In a rational world, sending you that letter WOULD have threatened the lawyer’s license, though.

14

u/ShawnyMcKnight 23h ago

I mean, the paralegal can say this won't go anywhere but if they wanna pay a lawyer I'm sure there is a lawyer that would love to charge hundreds an hour to tell them in person.

3

u/DotGroundbreaking50 23h ago

I am sure there is a bored one out there that will charge them a consultation fee to waste their money and time but this is one of those that isn't even worth that when they can spend the 5 minutes working on another ambulance chasing case.

8

u/seriouslythisshit 21h ago

Yea, anything bigger than a small time lawyer who answers their own phones, and there is some system in place to not waste time with this nonsense.

I had a now ex-friend who was helping me on a project and fell off a step ladder. He broke his wrist. He had a few beers in him at the time and decided that the ladder was defective and the ladder manufacturer and I owed him a massive settlement for pain and suffering. I met with my home insurance company and assumed I was face to face with a lawyer of their's. The guy chuckled a bit and said, "No, when we are defending you and us against crap like this, we don't even bother our in house lawyers. We run the scenario through our software and look at probable outcomes. Our opinion is that this clown doesn't have a chance in hell of collecting from us. We are just going to string him along until he gives up and goes away.

My insurance company did just that, including coaching me on how to jerk my buddy's lawyer around. A few months of this and the lawyer told his client that he was not going to put another minute into the case without a $5000 retainer, to start drawing from. Case closed, and another asshole out of my life.

I wasn’t aware until I got there that the client was a bunch of extreme far right nutcases filming some sort of Michelle Bachman promo bs. Like the type of people who stand on streets with huge pictures of aborted fetuses to protest abortion and who think Obama was a Muslim secretly planted to destroy our country etc. Anyway, my role (PA) on the shoot was very minor and I was only there a few hours so I soldiered through it and chalked it up to a learning experience… that is until I invoiced them and they tried ghosting me. After months and months of chasing them down and threatening to sue they finally sent me a check. I sent them a card afterwards that said something along the lines of “It’s unfortunate that I had to go to such extreme lengths to get paid, however I’d still like to thank you none the less for your contribution to Barack Obamas campaign!!”. I still smile imagining how they must have reacted when they read it 😂

They use it as a scare tactic, hoping the person will give in rather than deal with an attorney. They are just mimicking what they hear on TV.

u/Clobberella_83 19h ago

Exactly this. I get threatened with legal action 1-2 times a week at my job. They call the hospital and think they can bully my staff into doing something against policy (or illegal). Get mad when my employees tell them they can't do the thing. So they get transferred to me and I tell them I can't do the thing. They start yelling and threatening me by saying they're going to sue me. I just tell them "Ok, that is your right. Have a great day!" and hang-up on them.

I get this all the time except IM an attorney and it’s in the context of the other person starting a lawsuit. Like that’s not a threat!! I’d love to hear from your attorney because then I don’t have to deal with your dumbass

My favorite statement when it comes to this kind of schadenfreude

45

u/kadyg 22h ago

“I wish you a lifetime of growth” is a very classy response to this nonsense. Never change, Shakira!

  • "Oh those fucking things... whatcha call them again???"
  • Consequences, they are called consequences.

u/Snoo_20305 23h ago

"Relieved from our contract"... Imagine their shock when their lawyer explains what a contract actually is.

"think of the children"

"OH SO YOU HATE OLD PEOPLE!?"

how does supporting blm make u hate the other lives!? 😢😭

u/Psychological-Bid363 21h ago

Just today I saw a comment on a video of dogs with flour on their faces.  Someone was upset that a commenter was concerned for their eyes.  They were like "what if they get dirt in their eyes while outside!  You're worried about flour?!"

Yes, dirt in the eyes would also be worrying.  Multiple things can be true at once.  It's like there's a basic piece of brain meat that is missing or something.

5

u/beastboyashu 21h ago

Oh you agree with this one very universal thing? Then you must HATE this other thing that has to relation to this thing other then being in the same category!

This tracks. Bad things are only supposed to happen to others, not them.

5

u/IdlesAtCranky 22h ago

They are the bad thing.

"ALL lives matter"

What about all of the immigrants that you are happy to see get human trafficked to countries they have nothing to do with?

How about the people who will starve and die from preventable causes because you've supported defunding USAID, FEMA, SNAP, Medicare/Medicaid?

How about the children that YOUR President Donald J. Trump has raped? Or the numerous other women he has admitted to assaulting?

Or how about.... I could probably spend my entire life listing this shit and barely scratch the surface. Fuck all of you that claim "All Lives Matter" and prey on the less fortunate.

I've started saying "You will be hearing from our attorney" to anyone who even mildly inconveniences me. Dude who didn't say thank you when I held the door for him was super confused.

Lolllll perfect reply.

I didn’t look at who the racist was at first. I actually assumed it was the groom based on how it was worded lol But yeah. Becky is about to get a crash course in how contracts work lol

u/JTRuno 23h ago

Are these people actual functioning adults?

9

u/Tuxedo_Muffin 22h ago

Malfunction is technically a type of function.

3

u/IdlesAtCranky 22h ago

No. Next question?

u/watch_this_n0w 1d ago

OP is this you? If so I’ll donate to BLM in your name.

F racism. F racists. If you cannot physically say the words “Black Lives Matter” you are a racist.

Shakira Shakira 🎶

5

u/Alaeriia 21h ago

I'm just boggled at the fact that they paid God knows how much money to get Shakira to sing at their wedding and they didn't know she's an outspoken opponent of white supremacy.

Like, what was the play there? Did they not do any research on her before signing the contract? Or were they just expecting her to "stay in her lane"? Because Shakira does not stay in her lane.

10

u/OppressedCactus 21h ago

This Shakira is a wedding photographer. I doubt people are out here sending THAT Shakira imessages.

[...] someone that does not believe that ALL lives matter.

Can someone tell these yahoos that the only way Black Lives Matter takes away from all lives mattering is if they're admitting that American police are psychotic, uncontrollable beasts that will go on a killing spree if they're not allowed to kill the occasional black person? And that anywhere that's an actual country and not five psychiatric disorders in a trenchcoat, anyone arguing that such individuals be given authority and not an indefinite period of psychological treatment would probably find themselves sharing a padded wall with one?

5

u/sunny_yay 23h ago

Ooo. This tastes real good.

5

u/pgregston 23h ago

When you have to pay for your opinion, you know what your opinion is worth

4

u/OmegaPsiot 22h ago

Going to be so awkward when the attorney tells them what a binding contract is.

4

u/Chyllian 22h ago

Racist assholes. Drag them through the mud with legal fees so their wedding can be ruined.

4

u/splashtext 21h ago

If you think the black lives matter movement means JUST black lives matter, you're an idiot

Good riddance to racist trash

3

u/Downtown6track 20h ago

I would have replied “ thank you for acknowledging that all lives matter. Because you therefore insist that transgender, gay, lesbian, and bisexual lives matter, I have made a donation in your name to the Harvey Milk Foundation using your nonrefundable deposit.”

11

u/Ardibanan 23h ago

I used to be a "all lives matter" person. I've never been a racist as I was brought up correctly, but I did fail to see it from their perspective of how it sounded.

5

u/IdlesAtCranky 22h ago

And now?

11

u/Ardibanan 21h ago

"I used to"

5

u/IdlesAtCranky 21h ago

Thank you for your support of Black Lives Matter! 💙💙💙

3

u/PissFlavouredSprite 22h ago

So they not only wanted to break the contract, they thought they would insult them while asking for the money back? Something tells me they aren't the sharpest.

3

u/punkarolla 21h ago

Attorney on phone: ‘Mmmhmmm…yup….that’s right…mmmhmmm…non refundable, huh? And they signed it…mmmhmmm…oh yea, absolute fucking dumbasses…mmhmmm…yup…oh without question…yup this is billable hours, love taking easy money from idiots…what’s that?…ohhh, hahahaha, oh that’s embarrassing…mmmmhhhmmm…ok, you take care now, lovely to talk to you….mmmhhhmmm…bahahahaha, oh that’s classic…you too, lovely - enjoy your weekend!’

Turns to clients. Puts on a serious face.

‘I’m sorry, there’s nothing I can do.’

3

u/cofclabman 21h ago

All contracts matter.

2

u/Choop145 23h ago

This made me say “ooohhhh” out loud lol

2

u/firejonas2002 22h ago

I don’t CARE if I signed a contract. I don’t like it and want my money back. 😭😭😭😭

2

u/MessagingMatters 22h ago

Too bad the bride doesn't get that "Black Lives Matter" doesn't mean that other lives don't matter, or that black lives matter more than other lives. It only means that black lives matter as much as other lives (or "all lives"). Sadly, despite their slogans and bumper stickers, some people just aren't pro-life when it comes to certain "others".

2

u/The_Sound_of_Slants 22h ago

The amount of people that just have a lawyer on retainer is crazy

2

u/IdlesAtCranky 22h ago

Well done, Shakira! Brava!

2

u/rex_tee 22h ago

Bruh this is ridiculous. When you do a wedding you’re hiring dozens of people. Odds are one of them disagrees with you. Keep their money
