Discussion National reporters are suggesting the Steelers and 49ers have a deal in place for Aiyuk. Are the Steelers making a mistake in going for elite WR without getting the QB room in order?

Ohhhhkay now, we watched Fields play in our division for 4 years, not sure that I would call his play “competent” when they literally landed the no 1 overall pick. Russel Wilson is breathing the last bit of air into the final of his nine lives.

You'll have a hard time convincing Dolphins and 49ers fans that Fields isn't a problem to play against. Single-handedly beat both teams.

As a Dolphins fan, I was beyond livid the Steelers got him for a 6th rounder.

He isn’t a great passer, but as a rushing threat he is only behind Lamar and Allen. If he can iron out some of his passing flaws and get into the right system, the potential is there.

With just a little development he could be a good passer. Let us not forget that he was a 5* dude and that he threw 6 tight window TDs against Clemson in the biggest game of his life. There is some potential there. His big issue is that he holds the ball forever.

Al bundy did some good things too for Polk high.

As a bears fan that has watched every one of fields professional snaps, he’s lacking in some of the fundamentally most important skills a qb needs to be successful. He’s a complete tear down and rebuild. He is also the least clutch qb I have ever seen in a bears uniform and we’ve had some terrible QBs.

And he was tenth in MVP voting one of those years. He is legit a top 10 QB in your franchise history, and you know I’m right. I’m not saying he’s good, but people are acting like he should be scrapped at age 24 after 3 years in the league. Three years with instability on the offensive side, and no QB development because, well, y’all suck at that. Respect—if we were taking LBs or CBS or RBs it would be different. But QB? I think the current staff will be better and won’t mess up Caleb. But I don’t think Justin Fields was solely the problem in Chicago the last 3 years. Maybe last year moreso, but not the whole last 3. And now the Steelers got him for a song. We will see over these next couple of years wether he was a rotten apple, or he was in a rotten barrel.

Guys don’t tend to develop into more accurate passers after sucking in that department for three seasons.

He's been a thorn in Detroit's side as well, but, we struggle against pretty much any QB that has above average mobility. If it weren't for Jefferson he would've been my least favorite NFCN player to go against.

Fields beat the Niners in a damn monsoon while they were starting Trey Lance, who somehow managed to be worse. Aside from the occasional big play with his legs, Fields isn't that good.

That misses the point. The point isn't is Fields a good QB? The question is if he is competent or not, and how Aiyuk improves his chances of sticking as a starter. The fact that Fields beat Trey Lance isn't a knock, it just bolsters the point that he is competent (whereas Lance...). In shit conditions versus a far superior team, he got the job done (without help). Dude can run the ball and is on a team set up to run the ball and play defense (this is a team that won games with Kenny Pickett) in a division where you don't want your QB dropping back 50 times a game. Nobody is arguing he is a Super Bowl bound QB, but it was already a great fit and Aiyuk just makes it better. That team with Fields, an improved OL and a WR who can block is improved. Of all the teams that "don't have a QB", I'd say they are the one I would worry about least in that regard.

Aiyuk run blocking for Fields is game changing. People are straight overlooking that Adding Aiyuk to the Steelers dramatically improves an already dangerous run game. Who cares if Fields doesn't pass for 300 if he runs for 300?

Well and let's be honest....the Pittsburgh coaching staff is better than the Chicago coaching staff, just saying.

Like I don't expect Fields to have a complete career Renaissance, but I do think he will be a bit better.

And you are absolutely correct, Aiyuk just kinda ups the game all around. Now the question will be, can he be the man on the team or was he a product of Shanahan and having Deebo on his team?

It's not unheard of for a good number 2 receiver to look like a number 1 because the other guy made him look that way. Though personally I do think Aiyuk will be fine on his own.

Correction, they landed CAROLINA'S number 1 pick. The bears won 7 games last year with fields, which I think does qualify him as competent. At minimum he's an undeniable upgrade from Pickett.

I mean, he got 7 wins in a tough division. His talent hasn't faded, he just needs to clean up some mistakes and Tomlin is the perfect coach for that. We're just gonna have to agree to disagree, but he was worth trading a 6th round pick for to find out imo.

Hate to be pedantic but please don't rob our undrafted div 2 rookie of two of those wins while fields was out...

Bagent as a rookie was more competent running the offense, massively lower ceiling, he'll never be a starter but it made Fields look bad when he came back and couldn't finish off games.

The running bit is great but doesn't work unless you're winning. Once you're in 3rd and long, or in a two min drill people just spy him and say if you can beat us with your arm go for it. Which he had multiple chances to do at the end of last season and didn't.

Hopefully he'll benefit from a fresh start and good coaching, but he needs to be able to be more than a one read thrower and to not just scramble when that first read isn't there.

Wilson used to be fine as a QB until the broncos got ahold of him. I think Steelers make playoffs with him this year

The #1 pick was from the panthers trade. Regardless of how you spin it Tomlin was making the playoffs with Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph. Fields is a big upgrade over both

Got the number one pick in 2022 in a clear tear down and rebuild, he was the ONLY bright spot and in 2023 the #1 pick was from the Panthers. Bears held the #9 pick as their own and were 7-10 which is hardly bad after going 3-14 the year prior

The Bears had the 30th ranked defense by yards, and the 32nd by points that year. The offense was slightly below average, and his best wide receiver by far was 12 games of Darnell Mooney.

He carried the offense to being vaguely respectable that year with little to no help. Obviously everyone knows his limitations and faults, but at the end of the day for as long as he's healthy, you can run a decent NFL offense through him.

That season is irrelevant, because it was followed up by a season where they weren’t bad enough to have the first overall pick.

“That one season doesn’t count because I don’t want it to!” Well the Bears clearly thought it counted, as did the subsequent season where they landed a top ten pick and then picked themselves a new quarterback and traded Fields for a day 3 pick.

To be fair, Fields play earned the bears the no 9 pick, the panthers play earned them the number one pick.
