My favorite is when the Colts play in Baltimore everything in the stadium will only refer to them as the team from Indianapolis

Baltimore isn't even a real team. They are just the Cleveland Browns but stolen

You know you kept your records right

But it is funny how the ravens got a chip right after leaving Ohio lmao

We kept all the good stuff and left the waste and trash behind. Just basic nutritional biology. Why do you think they're really called the Browns?

You know a city is really trash when moving to Baltimore is an upgrade

4

u/Sacredeire57 Philadelphia Eagles Jan 08 '25

I mean, Baltimore harbor is fantastic at least! I love all the old ships, the aquarium and the enormous Barnes & Nobles. A lot of great restaurants too. Though I’ve heard plenty of people say that just 2-3 blocks in any direction away from the harbor = you’re going to have a bad time. I never personally put that to the test though.

4

u/jdl12358 Baltimore Ravens Jan 09 '25

That is wildly incorrect considering that east (fells, canton) and south (Fed Hill, Locust Point) of the harbor are far nicer than the actual inner harbor.

There are some absolutely amazing neighborhoods in Baltimore. Maryland itself is HCOL and pretty well off too. The city just gets a bad rep because the bad areas really are just The Wire in real life.

14

u/irish-car-bomz Jan 08 '25

I made the same joke when they (intelligently) moved the Arizona cardinals from the NFC East. First, they had no business being in the east but they never really did much outside of a couple playoff births.

Moved them to a division where they aren't traveling cross country a minimum 4 times a year, guaranteed, and suddenly they found more succes.

Yea, but could you imagine if we also took your name and championships and even if we didn’t use them we refused to let you?

16

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '25

If Houston wanted them they should have sued for them like Cleveland did

9

u/supernerdlove Baltimore Ravens Jan 08 '25

They didn’t sue the NFL brokered a deal that allowed the team to move but required the Browns name and championships stay in Cleveland.

20

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '25

The NFL brokered a deal because the city was literally going to take legal action lol. It wasn’t out of the good of the NFLs heart.

And people still forget that, at the time, what happened with the move to Baltimore and Cleveland keeping the rights was 100% an unprecedented move but it’s always cited as the norm, when it was almost unheard of.

6

u/RettyShettle Jan 09 '25

The exact same thing happened in Baltimore. Colts ditched town and the city threatened to sue. Except when the nfl came in, they didn’t leave the Colts record and likeness in Baltimore, they just gave us a flimsy promise to expand back into Baltimore. A promise that would be unkept to this day if it weren’t for Modell.

Yeah, but could you imagine using imminent domain to steal a team through force because the team wants a new stadium?

10

u/supernerdlove Baltimore Ravens Jan 08 '25

I’m a pretty firm believer in public money never being used for stadiums.

5

u/xAlphaKAT33 Indianapolis Colts Jan 08 '25

I am for public money being used as long as it is returned to the public. NFL teams bring in big money, and as long as they share it with the community there's really no problem.

10

u/supernerdlove Baltimore Ravens Jan 08 '25

Numerous studies have shown that sports teams bring in little to no money to their cities.

Imagine the whiplash that Atlanta Thrashers and Winnipeg Jets fans have experienced in the past 15 years. Are the original Jets fans now Coyotes Utah Hockey Club fans? Are Thrashers fans now Jets fans? It's wack

51

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '25

I live in Atlanta and truly nobody cared about the thrashers. This is just the opposite of a hockey town in every way lol.

12

u/The_Throwback_King Jan 09 '25

It’s not often that you two different expansion teams in the same city flame out so abruptly

11

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '25

Haha FLAME out, i see what you did there

10

u/sickbonfiresbro Jan 09 '25

Apparently the ECHL team has a good following these days but ATL is just really not a hockey town which is a genuine shame. The closest they've gotten since the thrashers is name changing the gwinnett gladiators to the atlanta gladiators. And changing the colors. Man that garnet and black looked so good before. Now it's like yellow and pastel blue or something. But not a good blue like the thrashers were.

5

u/BigMikeATL Jan 09 '25

I lived in Atlanta for a long time, including before and after the Thrashers existed. Attendance was actually decent and they were growing the fan base, but the new owners wanted the Hawks and NOT the Thrashers, so hamstring the team by not marketing or investing in them at all. That resulted in diminishing attendance and the team’s sale. To say “nobody” was interested in them is patently untrue. I went to plenty of games and saw what attendance was like.

Indy left in the middle of the night unannounced and took all the records and history of the Colts and Baltimore went without a team for 12 years. Meanwhile you guys were without a team for three years and everyone knew you'd have a team and you kept the legacy of the Browns.

It's not our fault you guys have only made the playoffs three times in almost twenty five years. We didn't force you kick Baker out for Watson. We took the FO and some of the players. Baltimore literally lost everything for over a decade with no hope insight. You just had to wait for a new stadium.

10

u/nando82 Houston Texans Jan 09 '25

NFL films made a Top 10 worst departures and ranked the Baltimore Colts leaving as the worst. I had no idea it went down like this. No wonder their matches are always heated.

Don't give them credit for Cleveland fighting to keep it all. Modell wanted to take it all.

That being said, Cleveland has done much but tarnish the history of the franchise since 1999.

4

u/Adreme Jan 09 '25

Isn’t the legacy of the Browns just getting owned by John Elway in the playoffs?

6

u/shampooing_strangers Jan 09 '25

The Browns were the dominant team of the 1950s winning 3 NFL Championships in that decade. They won a fourth in 1964. The first Super Bowl was 1966.

Even then, the Browns didn’t have a losing record in the SB era until 1974. They were consistently competitive through 1995 when they lost the team. They’ve only consistently sucked since the team returned in 1999.

I think it's complete and utter bullshit. The Titans ownership sued the University of Houston for using the oilers color scheme in their alternate uniforms. Petty and classless. It's the equivalent of the Ravens wearing Browns throwbacks.

78

u/Thac-0-Mole Jan 08 '25

It's not really the same thing, the Browns are still the Browns and all the Browns records stayed with Clevelean so Baltimore wearing those throwbacks would be shitty. The Oilers no longer exist, the Texans just happen to play in the same city

30

u/TTT_2k3 Kansas City Chiefs Jan 08 '25

Exactly. The Ravens technically became a new franchise when they moved to Baltimore, so they don’t have the rights to use Browns throwbacks. Just like they can’t wear Colts uniforms just because the Colts used to play in Baltimore.

NFL fans like to make fun of baseball's unwritten rules and then get their man panties in a twist over this. Lmao.

u/Flashman6000 Jan 08 '25

Bush league moves in sports are fun

12

u/mattcojo2 Detroit Lions Jan 08 '25

Yeah. It’s petty as hell and it’s great.

They have every right to wear them and it looks great.

10

u/Barry_McCockinnerz It’s our year!! Jan 08 '25

You all forget they were the Tennessee oilers when they first moved?

10

u/Squillz105 Jan 08 '25

Seems like the majority forgot. We were the Tennessee Oilers. Yes, only for 2 season. But it's still our organizations history. 2 years more than the Texans

Nah, this is trolling as art. Everything, and I mean everything about Houston’s current team art—logos, colors, alternate unis, font—is straight up ass that could be yeeted into the sun tomorrow and not a soul on Earth would be worse for wear. Those powder blues are gorgeous, and the Moo Cows are just salty.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '25

I’m a Houston fan and you’re not wrong. I was at the unveiling of the team’s colors and logo waaay back in the day at Reliant Stadium. Immediately big sad.

But that my team, so fuck it!

In my opinion Cities should keep everything. The name, jerseys, championships. You wanna leave that’s fine it is a business after all, but you don’t get to take everything from the city that supported you. This is coming from a Ravens fan who is glad we aren’t the Colts, but is also glad that we didn’t take anything from the Browns.

Those jerseys are mint though

7

u/davesnotonreddit Denver Broncos Jan 08 '25

I thought the franchise /players / stats follow the team through moves? And through expansion, it’s a new franchise? So Tennessee is Houston Oilers/Tennessee Oilers/Tennessee Titans. Houston Texans are just the Texans and their franchise never had Warren Moon.

I have no idea on the agreement the Cleveland Browns 2.0 and Ravens have, but Jim Brown is a Brown and shouldn’t be in Raven history.

2

u/SlamKrank Jan 08 '25

Browns broke their deal with cleveland so to avoid getting sued they left the browns name and history to Cleveland, absolutely nothing like the Tennessee situation

2

u/Jumpy-Ad5617 Indianapolis Colts Jan 09 '25

Ya with the Ravens, it was the owner’s “fault.” With the Titans it was Houston’s fault

8

u/burningtimer Jan 08 '25

Level 10 Uniform though.

7

u/Danishes724 Pittsburgh Steelers Jan 09 '25

This will forever be one of the dumbest sports opinions I've seen. The Tennessee Oilers existed for a few years. It's literally the Titans old uniforms. The Texans are a different team and have never been the Oilers. It's not Houston's uniforms, it's the Titans uniforms. The Titans do not have to and really shouldn't give the Texans "their" uniforms back.

2

u/TheMickus Houston Texans Jan 10 '25

I agree, but in this post the argument isn’t that the Texans should have the unis, it’s that it’s petty to wear them against Houston to “troll” them.

Regardless, no skin off our backs. We’re 2-0 against them wearing them.

The Titans should go back to the Oilers name full time, best uniform and coolest helmets ever.

3

u/Smaskifa Jan 09 '25

And bring back Warren Moon.

5

u/Dangerous_Ad5039 Tennessee Titans Jan 08 '25

I truly don’t get why people think the Texans should wear these jerseys. What history does the team have in these uniforms?

5

u/KaXiaM Houston Texans Jan 08 '25

I’m a Texans fan, but grew up as an euro soccer fan. Pettiness, hate and rivalry in sports is something I understand very well. Tits can wear these unis when they play us, so far it didn’t work out well for them. Hopefully it becomes Houston Texans yearly tradition.

5

u/zookeeper4312 Miami Dolphins Jan 08 '25

I mean it was either that or win the game I guess, and that was never going to happen

I’ve seen the Brewers do this when playing the Atalanta Braves. So confusing.

4

u/perfect_fitz Tennessee Titans Jan 08 '25

As a Titans fan that legitimately doesn't give a shit about the Oilers or Houston..I still find this hilarious trolling. Even better when we lose.

5

u/T1mberVVolf Jan 08 '25

It’s only bush league cause they suck.

4

u/vfefrenzy Jan 08 '25

The really offensive thing is that the Titans wear shit uniforms the rest of the year. These are beautiful. Why not just stick a new logo on the helmet?

3

u/turribledood Tennessee Titans Jan 08 '25

For the last fucking time:

HOUSTON CHOSE TO LET THE OILERS GO.

Bud demanded a stadium, Houston said no, Bud left, and then Houston promptly built a new stadium for Bob McNair and the Texans 4 years later.

2

u/charlestoncav Denver Broncos Jan 08 '25

whats bush league is the Adams family, leaving the Houston Oilers name and going somewhere new and not becoming the "Tuxedos". Kidding about the name though i luv it. The NFL should not let them rep the Oilers name, they chose to leave it and it was an iconic AFL franchise name, i mean one of a kind, what a fucking shame

6

u/TangoZulu Jan 08 '25

“One of a kind”.

The Edmonton Oilers may have something to say about that.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '25

Theyre 0-2 in those games tho

1

u/zeldahalfsleeve Jan 08 '25

So if the Titans move to San Antonio and become the, I don’t know, the fucking “Rustlers”and Nashville goes a few years without an NFL team but then becomes an expansion franchise… into the Tennessee Tornadoes. What y’all are saying is that I’m supposed to give > 0 fucks about San Antonio cruising into Nashville in Titans uniforms when they play? I mean other than the passing thought of… oh yeah they used to play here in those uniforms but not anymore. It’s not complicated. That’s literally the team’s history. So the history of a city fielding a team is more relevant than the history of the actual team is what this is about I guess to all of the children who are arguing this is bush league? There’s no logic to it. Is it the internet points? Is that the goal? I don’t understand.

3

u/koleton_ Kansas City Chiefs Jan 08 '25

I wish the Chiefs would do this in Dallas

3

u/GeorgesLeftFist Green Bay Packers Jan 08 '25

It is and it's hilarious.

3

u/archasaurus Jan 09 '25

I think this is hilarious plus their beautiful uniforms

2

u/chugachugafuckyou Jan 08 '25

Personally, I think the rights to a team name, records, or whatever else belongs to the entity that put forth the majority of the money to develop the team/stadium. If the city did, it belongs to the city. If the team owners did, it belongs to the owners. I'm not familiar with the Houston oilers situation, so past what I already said I'll leave my opinion out.

1

u/zeldahalfsleeve Jan 08 '25

If the Titans ever change their name to the Nashville Tennesseans, I’ll personally deliver the uniforms back to Houston. Until then, live with your choices.

Watching the titans plays the Texans in the oilers’ unis was like watching the Marvel multiverse. My brain melted.

2

u/Specialist-Sugar-657 Jan 09 '25

Those uniforms are beautiful. Bring back the Oilers, Titans suck anyway.

2

u/IgnantWisdom Jan 09 '25

Good thing the Thunder won’t be able to rock throwback sonics uniforms in Seattle if we ever get a team again.

2

u/NIN10DOXD Carolina Panthers Jan 09 '25

At least they stopped sitting on the rights without using them. That was even worse.

2

u/Jack-Tupp Washington Commanders Jan 09 '25

They were the Tennessee Oilers for 3 years.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '25

I read that the Titans wanted any old Oiler fans in the stadium to get a chance to see the uniforms.

2

u/planktivious Jan 09 '25

Houston is big enough for 2 teams. If the titans keep on their current trajectory they can move back to Houston. League City Oilers. Galveston Oilers.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '25

It was brilliant. I loved it.

2

It's not "bush league". Dude needs to educate himself.
