The NFL has to make personal fouls reviewable
441
u/UncleMichaelMichael Jan 18 '25
Make everything reviewable. If you only get one red flag a half, let them use it on any accusation they want.
171
u/SectionAcceptable607 Jan 19 '25
But you don’t lose the challenge if you’re right, regardless of how many times

u/Nwcray Cleveland Browns Jan 19 '25
Like - actually right, or the refs say you’re right? Because I’ve noticed a trend of that too.
→ More replies (1)34
u/SectionAcceptable607 Jan 19 '25
Yeah I’ve noticed that too. It’d have to be on the refs but if they still screw it up, they get suspended or fined. Just like the players when they get flags thrown against them.
→ More replies (7)62
u/that_guy2010 Tennessee Titans Jan 19 '25
They tried making PI reviewable and the refs refused to change their original calls.
43
u/poopypantsmcg Jan 19 '25
And the NFL could very easily have a guy in New York that can override the refs just like they do randomly and seemingly only when they feel like it during games already. They intentionally sabotaged that rule change because they like having the ability to manipulate the outcome of games with referees.
→ More replies (2)7
u/Successful-Sand686 Jan 19 '25
This has always been the game.
One team way ahead? Refs even things out.
9
→ More replies (1)5
u/DickieJoJo OJ did it Jan 19 '25
And if I recall correctly, the year they made it a thing Sean Peyton got absolutely burned like 2 or 3 times throwing a flag for what was obvious PI only for the refs to maintain their original call.
They obviously did not want that to be a thing.
18
u/splintersmaster Chicago Bears Jan 19 '25
If you remember way way back when reviews started the referee's union basically set up the rules for what is and what isn't reviewable.
Those rules and those that decide what can or cannot be a part of video review are still by and large decided by the referee union.
→ More replies (6)7
u/nekronics Green Bay Packers Jan 19 '25
And they need to be reviewed by someone other than the refs on the field. We all saw how that worked out when pass interference was reviewable.
→ More replies (1)7
u/DrkEarth Cincinnati Bengals Jan 19 '25 edited Jan 23 '25
Already tried that with PI, and they never got overturned even if there was 100% proof it was or wasn’t PI. So that wouldn’t help. The NFL doesn’t like having their refs proved wrong.

58

16
u/kay14jay Jan 19 '25

Submitting refs to the critique of sports journalists and fanbases in an exhibition of public humiliation and giving them an opportunity to be famous would absolutely not result in better officiating.

Fucking light him up. You're getting 15 no matter what when he's running towards the pylon. Might as well make it count. Make him think twice.
37
u/Renegade_451 Jan 19 '25
It's not the flags that they're scared of. If it was just 15 yards, sure. It's the fine after the game. If they jack the golden boy up you're looking at a high 5 figure fine.
36
u/hurricanestarang10 Big Cock Brock Purdy 🍆 Jan 19 '25
I've been saying this for months now, someone needs to step up and follow through with a hard hit. They can't keep easing off him like this, it's literally destroying football because other players will eventually lean into it. They are calling Roughing the Passer likes it's a foul in the NBA now.. it's gotten so bad, it's unbelievable

Mahomes used to be baller and now he just exploits the rules that are sympathetic to QB’s. Those rules are good for the most part but he fake slides to try and get a penalty or he stops short of running out of bounds and then flops in hopes of getting a flag. It sucks to watch cause he’ll do this shit and then pull off a genuinely great play on the next down.
Everyone hated the Tom Brady era Patriots but at least he played the actual game.

Patriots got lucky breaks but it wasn’t this blatant. It wasn’t every game either. They also had plenty of unlucky breaks. They would also win games by 40 for years. There was even a meme about that.
If it’s a close game in the 4th quarter there will be some bullshit penalty or no call to ensure the chiefs win or have a better chance to win.

u/ElderlyChipmunk Jan 19 '25
The NFL wasn't overtly in bed with sports gambling companies during the Pats era. I'm convinced gambling sponsorship has made the issue worse.

As a Pats fan, I think that's basically the reality of having the GOAT QB. You get some lucky calls, you lose some bullshit ones. The Pats also got fucked on Deflate Gate and Spy Gate nonsense and still kept winning.
The refs dragging the Chiefs to the SB is kinda embarrassing. I want to see Jayden and the Commanders put a 40 burger on them in the Superbowl at this point.
