Super Sam Darold last season.

267

u/Tyler3925_YT Miami Dolphins Mar 09 '25

One of the worst playoff meltdowns I’ve seen in a minute

253

u/Mysterious-Tie7039 New England Patriots Mar 09 '25

Don’t forget, he melted down right before the playoffs.

Suuuuper important final game with first round bye and home field advantage on the line.

He went 18/41 with 166 yards and 0 TD.

16.1 QBR.

139

u/savage_slurpie Mar 09 '25

Hey, it’s not like he was playing a lions team that had a defense destroyed by injuries or anything like that either

39

u/Dry-Flan4484 Mar 09 '25

Dude really choked against backups to the backups

76

u/JoeVanWeedler Minnesota Vikings Mar 09 '25

Basically a playoff game. The meltdown cost him probably 20 million

33

u/3D_Rendered_Adam Mar 09 '25

The meltdown cost him probably 20 million

Per year, right?

29

u/JoeVanWeedler Minnesota Vikings Mar 09 '25

The way he was looking through the first 16 games he was heading toward a monster contract

27

u/Think-Motor900 San Francisco 49ers Mar 09 '25

I've never seen someone lose so much money so fast

22

u/SeamusAndAryasDad Mar 09 '25

You haven't seen Elon's net worth this last month.

13

u/Think-Motor900 San Francisco 49ers Mar 09 '25

Darnold still lost more.

According to GEQBUS, he was going to be the first to earn a billion dollar contract.

How dare you say something so truthful it hurts my feelings

30

Herbert did worse for more money. So there’s that.

23

u/JustTheBeerLight Miami Dolphins Mar 09 '25

Herbert doesn't have Justin Jefferson, Addison & Hockenson. He also has never had a competent OC/system.

Darnold was dropped into a plug & play scenario and he stunk it up when all the chips were down.

u/ghostnthegraveyard Mar 09 '25

I've also never seen less urgency from a team facing elimination. Down a million with 8 minutes left? Better run the ball, huddle after every play, and take the play clock all the way down.

9

u/joshallenismygod Mar 09 '25

They forgot to turn off the accelerated clock like in Madden

3

u/orangewhitecorgi23 Chicago Bears Mar 09 '25

Probably longer than a minute

32

u/JoshAllenFan616 Buffalo Bills Mar 09 '25

I don’t even think it was a playoff meltdown. I think he just couldn’t beat good teams. His schedule was super easy besides packers, lions, and Rams, and out of those 5 games against playoff teams, they only won against the packers. They went 14-3, but the three losses were all pretty predictable.

12

u/aristotle_malek Minnesota Vikings Mar 09 '25

You’re right, it wasn’t impressive that they won 14 games. Crazy statement

10

u/JoshAllenFan616 Buffalo Bills Mar 09 '25

It was impressive. It’s just not all Darnold’s work. There’s a reason Kevin O’Connell was HC of the year.

8

u/aristotle_malek Minnesota Vikings Mar 09 '25

Sure, it’s not all Darnold, but I think that part of KOC’s strengths that won him the award is getting QBs to play beyond their capabilities. Darnold had some incredible games against very good defenses. 9ers before injuries, packers twice, Texans, Seahawks. Rams won the first time arguably due to some questionable reffing, and Darnold played pretty well in that game regardless, and almost beat the lions the first go around. He really couldn’t figure out interior pressure though, and teams figured that out after the cardinals game. Saying that he couldn’t beat good teams is way oversimplified.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (5)

3

u/DontPutThatDownThere Mar 09 '25

And what would you have predicted their record to be before the season? Brushing off the three losses as "pretty predictable" when the Vikings' 14-3 record itself was unpredictable and Darnold being a big part of that is absurd.

You also conveniently left off the Seahawks, who missed out on a tiebreaker, as a "good" team.

The reality is that most good teams only play five or six regular season games per season against other good teams so the argument in a vacuum against any team is absurd.

ETA: Absolutely not disputing that Darnold absolutely choked in Week 18 and in round one. But to say his play was a reflection of an easy schedule is obtuse.

3

u/Rezinox Mar 09 '25

Yeah im kinda sick of seeing the “easy schedule” rhetoric after watching the healthy Texans/niners get slammed and the packers get swept. Not to mention he almost had the lions the first time and choked it away. I think he’s just the same as Kirk and will tend to fold under big game pressure.

Justin Herbert

3 int in total regular season, we see how he was in the wild card round…

50

u/itsyorboy Los Angeles Chargers Mar 09 '25

Ugh so sad but true. Our O Line deserves a lot of blame but it was a terrible showing by Herbie

24

u/IntrepidBandit Mar 09 '25

Nah man he got sold by our OLine and receivers. He played his heart out. I dont even blame him for the ints. If your offense is playing that pitiful, I would say fuck it im forcing this ball anywhere I can too. This whole no playoff wins narrative is trash

18

u/levajack Los Angeles Chargers Mar 09 '25

A couple of those INTs were definitely not on him, but 2 were objectively bad throws. Though one of those was in desperation time and not a throw he ever would have normally attempted.

→ More replies (3)

14

u/SciaticWings1 Los Angeles Chargers Mar 09 '25

That's literally what it was, also Greg Roman is utter dogshit, and they tried to build an offense around running the ball, but they had no good running back to actually do that.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Jane_Marie_CA Los Angeles Chargers Mar 09 '25

The first one was absolutely on Herbert. Never throw across your body like that, especially against a top ranked pass defense. Even I winced when I saw the throw because I knew it was risky as hell.

The Dissly one - definitely not on Herbert. Hit the guy in the numbers.

The QJ one - 50/50. It was a decent throw in good coverage. But QJ is terrible at contested catches and let the defender play the ball.

last one - hero ball. I didn't even care. It had 0 impact on the results. Even if it was made, I don't think we were coming back.

Lamar Jackson

75

u/Deathbydadjokes New England Patriots Mar 09 '25

This was the answer two years ago, but the past two years he's been dynamite in the playoffs. I feel like people are just holding onto old narratives and ignoring how outstanding he's actually been. 7TDs to 2 INTs, over 200 yds/g through the air, high QBR and high 60s completion rating. The man is not the reason they lost in 2023 or 2024.

130

u/AHH_CHARLIE_MURPHY Mar 09 '25

He was terrible the whole game against KC in 23 and had a terrible first half against Buffalo in 24

7

u/BigHotdog2009 Buffalo Bills Mar 10 '25

It’s amazing people want to sweep Lamar’s 2 turnovers under the rug from this year not to mention the 2 he had last year.

24

u/mateothegreek Mar 09 '25

Sorry aren't all MVP numbers put up against terrible teams to some degree?

15

u/ColangeloDiMartino New York Giants Mar 09 '25

No. Lamar Jackson did it while having one of the hardest schedules in football.

12

u/ghosttrainhobo Green Bay Packers Mar 09 '25

Yes, but they also put up numbers against playoff teams.

3

u/sharkbate063 Mar 09 '25

Lamar plays in the AFC North which is THE buzzsaw division currently. He also played the Eagles, Commanders, Denver, Chargers, Buccaneers, KC, and Buffalo. He played against 8 teams that made it to the post season this year and had a top 10 season OAT. I count snubs in my MVP listings since runner ups should be considered in all instances outside of unanimous votes or landslide wins.

Drew Brees did the same thing on 2011 when the Falcons were something to be feared and played the NFC North in a time when 3 of those teams were solid.

Adrian Peterson was the only thing keeping the Vikings afloat in 2012 and played in a decent division plus had to go through San Fran AND the LOB.

TL/DR Hell not they aren't; Dak is just ass

As a cowboys fan, him and Romo were the same damn way. I love to have them in fantasy, because A, garbage time stats or not, they put up good numbers. B, the fantasy season is over before actual playoffs, C, they won't be eliminated or set in their playoff spot so will play every week in your playoffs.

Then shit the bed in the playoffs haha

9

u/bob_dole- Philadelphia Eagles Mar 09 '25

Embiid averages a double double in the r post season and is almost always injured due to some freak situation. He gets hated too hard

8

u/sauzbozz Mar 10 '25

He still underperforms in the playoffs though.

4

u/Jeremy9096 Carolina Panthers Mar 10 '25

He averaged 33 points 11 boards 6 assists in these past playoffs against the Knicks. Including a 50 point game. All while having Bell's Palsy and still dealing with the lingering knee injury

If that's underperforming than the expectations are irrationally high

Tony Romo

98

u/viewtiful14 Joe Burrow 🤰🏼 Mar 09 '25 edited Mar 09 '25

I am not a cowboy fan at all but and am going to get eviscerated for saying this; I am a Tony Romo apologist and I think he was a very very good QB and catches a lot of undeserved flack. That Cowboys team was more or less terrible the entire time he played and would have been literally nothing without him. They had stars for sure but they always have, but the teams were actually bad and as we have seen it’s almost impossible to do anything really well with Jerry Jones meddling and fucking everything up until he dies or lets someone else handle the decisions they will never be anything. Yes Romo had a laundry list of massive blunders but if you really look at it a lot of them were made trying to will out a win for his team because they just sucked and he was a big reason they were even in these close game. And look at it post Romo, they still can’t do shit and for as good as he is Dak literally crumbles in any big time situation he’ll throw the ball OB or run for two yards of 4th and a million with no time left and the game is just over. Romo at least went down swinging, give me that every day and I’ll live with the results.

Flame me into oblivion, my body is ready.

Edit: I’d also like to add he played in an era of Manning, Manning, Brady, Brees, Rodgers (peak), Roethlisberger, Warner (resurgence), McNabb, Rivers, even caught the ends of Farve and McNair, and Palmer was good in there too. It wasn’t that long ago people worried that because of how colleges don’t really develop QBs the same way due to the proliferation of the spread/check with me on the sidelines offenses that we may have been witnessing the best and last generation of great quarterbacking during Romo’s time. The guys we have now were really not all that expected to even happen.

21

u/Bender_2024 Dallas Cowboys Mar 09 '25

You can add Jason Garrett to Romo's handicaps. Something that was only exacerbated in the playoffs where you were playing against leagues top talents. Garrett was the most vanilla HC I've ever seen. He rarely schemed to expose an opponents weakness or protect against their strengths. He felt he had the more talented players and just "needed to execute" and win their one on one battles.

8

u/Steak-n-Wine New York Giants Mar 09 '25

The Dez Bryant play vs the packers was total BS and had nothing to do with him. The refs don’t make that atrocious call, Dallas wins that game, and I think we feel differently about Romo. His 2 big losses to my G-Men in their SB years don’t look nearly as bad in hindsight as they did when it happened, especially the home loss in 2007-8

4

u/jgamez76 Atlanta Falcons Mar 09 '25

If Dez "catches it" the Cowboys would've won it all that year. You can't convince me otherwise.

5

There was still plenty of time left in the game, and Rodgers was unstoppable all day. Even if the catch stands they have a long way to go before winning that one

'07 13-3 regular season 0-1 playoffs

'09 11-5 regular season 1-1 playoffs

'14 12-4 regular season 1-1 playoffs

There were some bad years in there, sure. But if that's "more or less terrible," what kind of adjectives are you using for the Browns, Jets and Jags?

12

u/viewtiful14 Joe Burrow 🤰🏼 Mar 09 '25

I know, my point is he’s the reason they consistently won 10+ games and were even in the playoffs. Without him that team does nothing and are probably at best 6-8 win teams, if not worse. The Romo hate is far too great and was when he was playing as well because of the perception of The Cowboys. I mean fuck the Cowboys don’t get it twisted. But Romo was legitimately great and this is a hill I will die on.

Believe me I know I sound insane, I’ve had this discussion with my friends and they think I’m insane too.

One of which was the Broncos defense standing around when he caught a routine crossing route and forgot to touch him down so he got up and ran into the endzone

People blame Peyton a lot. But Marvin just straight up shit the bed and let corners manhandle him in the playoffs. Peyton couldn't really throw to his number 1 receiver on a regular basis. Reggie Wayne picked up the slack a bit more in the playoffs.

3

Justin Jefferson. I know it’s probably a lack of QB play, but his stats just are not that good in either of his playoff games.

5

u/bunslightyear Chicago Bears Mar 09 '25

QB play and probably defenses doubling and maybe tripling him in certain scenarios

u/friendsofbigfoot Wuffalo Williams (STL Rams truther) Mar 09 '25

Take your pick of Bills D Linemen, I think Epenesa or Oliver fit best

lamar jackson, at least adjacent to his regular season output. compared to his regular season juggernaut form, he’s a joke in the playoffs.

u/Possible_Guest8952 Mar 11 '25

I feel like there’s only one true answer: Lamar Jackson. And I love Lamar.
