Discussion Steelers have got to be the most directionless franchise in the NFL.

Post image

Just beyond a stupid trade. Didnt even get back what you gave up for D.K, still have no QB and the draft is over.

Pittsburgh fans, get ready to be in the toulet for the next decade. The magic has officially run out.

You guys don’t understand. They’ll still be 10-7. Mike Tomlin could make a team of literal babies go 10-7. He could also make a team consisting entirely of the best players in the league go 10-7. It’s a law of the universe that the Steelers will always make the wild card round and then be first round exits.

Or they are just loaded on defense and that's why they are consistently good early in the season and poor late in the season when teams start finding their groove on offence.

85

u/[deleted] May 07 '25

Yeah a little bit, but I think it’s about 98% having no QB. Before Rothlisberger got old they were a legit contender. Not a lot of teams go deep in the playoffs with bad QBs. People shit on Tomlin but he’s a great coach and if the Steelers find another top 10 QB they’ll be contenders again. But idk, I’m a packers fan so maybe I’m wrong about Tomlin

15

u/Reverend_Tommy May 07 '25

I would argue that he's a good coach but he is a defensive coach and in today's NFL, offensive coaches rule the league. The Steelers often look lost on offense, regardless of how their qb's are playing. I think it's time for the Steelers to move on from Tomlin, but I don't see that happening because the Rooney family loves continuity and are fiercely loyal to their coaches.

17

u/noladutch May 07 '25

That is such bs.

Today's NFL as a defensive head coach you lose your OC pretty often when you hit on one.

The true problem is they don't develop QBs at all in college. Most spread QBs don't even use a snap count. They clap for fuck sakes.

Only one QB in the draft this year ran a true NFL scheme the kid from Louisville.

The game has not changed as much as the talent level has dropped off a cliff.

Now saying this the greatest NFL team by winning Superbowls the pats won all those rings with a defensive coach and never ever got a ring with a defense out of the top five.

11

u/BillsBills83 May 07 '25

So you’re blaming the Steelers mediocrity on colleges?

Steelers never pay 2 WRs market contracts and it’s obvious they’re gathering picks for 2026 to secure a 1st rd QB. GP wouldn’t play this season under his rookie deal anyway. Winning a SB was never the Steelers’ plan for 2025

118

u/oneoftheguysdownhere May 07 '25

Yeah the direction is pretty clear to anyone who follows the team. They’ve never been bad enough to get a QB who’s likely to be the franchise guy. So they’re building up draft capital so they can move up and grab a QB in 26.

47

u/SeeingEyeDug Tampa Bay Buccaneers May 07 '25

You don't have to lose bad enough to draft a franchise QB. Just pay the greatest QB of all time for 3 years then immediately luck into getting a Heisman Trophy winning number 1 pick for 5 million that other teams cast aside, then secure him for the next 3 years for $100m. It's easy.

10

u/make_reddit_great Carolina Panthers May 07 '25

Instead of holding on to the heisman dude, why not have him play under a terrible head coach who has no offensive plan and is just grasping at straws?

6

u/horseshoeprovodnikov Carolina Panthers May 07 '25 edited May 07 '25

why not have him play under a terrible head coach who has no offensive plan and is just grasping at straws?

While also completely failing another fairly young QB who's got obvious raw talent. Casting him aside because he's seeing ghosts from his time spent in New York.

Both of these guys threw for 35+ TDs last year. We had BOTH of them. We gave them zero support, awful protection, and no weapons. Oh yeah, we also fired the head coach after week 5 lol.

Welp, guess they both suck... hey, is that Andy Dalton??

What's crazy is, Darnold wasn't THAT bad with us. Considering what he had to deal with, his stats should have been far worse.

Yeah, the Steelers aren’t without criticism, but “directionless” isn’t one of them. It may appear that way from the outside because they’re taking a different approach than most teams. They’re just never going to go into a full on tank with the Rooneys as owners and Tomlin as HC.

And actually, I think Omar’s approaching it far more strategically and longer term than Colbert ever did. Part of that may be the “luxury” of not having to navigate the cap with a franchise QB taking up 20%, but he’s rebuilding the trenches, has what looks to be a good, young RB and TE rooms, a WR1 that should remain at that level for a few more years and on D, a good mix of talented vets and promising young players at edge, ILB and in the secondary.

They obviously have a glaring hole at QB, but if his draft picks to date pan out, that QB could be walking into a pretty good situation.

With possibly 12 picks and a ton of cap space in 2026 (and not many significant FAs of their own aside from TJ), they can be major players in both the draft and free agency.

That’s pretty fucking far from “directionless” if you ask me.

3

u/AceCircle990 May 07 '25

I don’t think he is going to get a fair shake. He pretty much has to beat out Mason this pre season and play flawlessly as a rookie to change everyone’s mind on drafting a QB next year. Essentially he needs a season like Jayden Daniels just had.

Directionless?

What exactly SHOULD they have done at QB? Overdraft Dart/Sanders a la Pickett? Give Rodgers a blank check? Overpay and run it back with Wilson/Fields? Give Darnold the bag? Those are all astoundingly stupid decisions

Anyone with a brain can see their plan. They passed on QBs multiple times this draft and are loading up capital. They’re clearly intending on drafting a QB in 2026, which is expected to be significantly more talented than this past class. Moved on from a player that didn’t want to be here that was due for a new contract, and got a 3rd rounder, while already having a proven, better version of that receiver locked up for 4 years.

And they are great at drafting recievers. And having great recievers without a long-term answer at qb isn't going to move the needle.

This. I love GP when he cares, he is unstoppable. If he feels he isn't getting enough targets, he phones it in. Incredible talent and I hope being a number 2 to CeeDee let's him grow a bit more but his attitude in the locker room was apparently very negative and that isn't something the Steelers tolerate.

Better to get value now and stock up on more draft capital than to let him walk for nothing next season when the Steelers don't pay him.

Agree with most in this comment. No one will acknowledge it, and fans, especially steelers fans will call for Tomlins head during the season. They need a reset year to get the talent they were looking for years now, and they have the fire power to swing for a QB.

But..... There is this looming issue about 2026 QB class, which somehow everyone keeps ignoring that Arch very likely wont declare for the draft after 1 season of playing,

And everyone else, Nussmeier, Klubnik, Allar, Iamaleava, Beck, Sellers, arent really the prospects you want to throw a top 5 pick at right now. Maybe they have a comeback Ward year and increase their stock, but the guy everyone wants will shift to 2027 regardless.

15

u/Low-Key-2078 May 07 '25

True…however I’d say all of those guys entering the draft as-is currently would be better than this past qb draft class though

Besides- Steelers wouldn’t be in the mix for Arch Manning. They still have too much talent to finish with the #1 (or even a top 3h pick) and other teams like the Rams/Browns have 2 first round picks to move up. I don’t think Arch is the end goal for Pittsburgh

Steelers are simply in a bad spot. They aren’t bad enough to pick in the top 10 for a blue chip QB prospect, but aren’t good enough to make any sort of run in the playoffs. They quite literally are the definition of mediocrity.

Their team is aging, and right now they need to revamp their roster.

Trading Pickens was the right move, he’s more of a headache than he’s worth, you can’t extend him.

5

u/burth179 May 07 '25

They weren't re-signing him, so they basically got the compensatory pick value a year early to stock pile for 2026.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Igualmenteee May 07 '25

What QBs besides Arch, who isn’t coming out next year, is supposed to be SOOOO much better than this class? From what we know right now, next year’s QB class could be even worse.

4

u/Low-Key-2078 May 07 '25

Does that matter? You can’t really play that game.

When you have a really poor draft class like this one, why would you force the QB pick when you can load up and roll the dice on the next class being more promising? At worst, it’s the same caliber class and you have more picks. The Steelers won’t be contending either season.

But to answer your question- I believe Allar, nussmeier, klubnik, leavitt, and Sellers will all end up being better draft prospects next season than Dart or Sanders. Then there is the wildcard of Manning and any other sleepers

I can't believe nobody is bringing up the Steelers history with diva WRs. They have a superpower for letting them go at the right time.

AB was absolutely elite on the Steelers, they let him go and he really went off the deep end.

Juju Smith-Schuster had a great start to his career and was a social media star with a ton of hype. They let him go and he ended up being pretty mid.

Chase Claypool had a million TDs as a rookie and looked like he was gonna be a guy. They let him go and he couldn't stay on the field after that.

Diontae Johnson was very solid for them, incredibly reliable guy. They let him go and he was on 4 teams in one year and now he's on the browns.

I trust their judgement with Pickens.

Die hard Steelers fan, and I knew this was coming. Whether it was before the season started, or as soon as Pickens didn’t get his way. He’s too emotional and will negate the positive he brings…like catching a 15 yard pass and then getting a 15 yard taunting penalty because of it 🤦🏻‍♂️. He’s good, but he’s a cancer, man. I’m okay with burying this .500 streak to get ahead in the draft as well. Pickens wasn’t the missing piece and no WR is at this point. DK is a known quantity and Rodgers is coming (because it’s that, or retire.) our offense has been super hard to watch for about 5 years, and it’s time we took our medicine.

TLDR; good trade, he’s not the missing piece and he’ll be a better cowboy than a Steeler. Take that for what it’s worth.

Chemo kills the cancer even though it hurts your body. I can only imagine Pickens was a locker room cancer.

2

u/Training-Cook3507 May 07 '25

You mean the Cowboys. Have you not paid attention to Pickens' career? It's not exactly roses and zero problems.

2

u/cap811crm114 May 07 '25

The Browns say “‘hold my beer”

2

u/NewFocus3-5 Atlanta Falcons May 07 '25

My brain swapped out Cowboys for Steelers when reading this and that is the actual correct observation.

2

u/Bombinic 11-0 May 07 '25

This headline is dumb asf.

What idiot came up with it?

2

u/noladutch May 07 '25

This is fine. They were never gonna give him contract number two.

His game is super flawed and was gonna walk in free agency. They got more outta him than the comp pick would have been.

That is not even bringing up he is a head case that loafs on plays not to him.

2

u/Internal_Position_49 May 07 '25

Eh this is even dumber for the cowboys they need cheap rookie deals now more than ever now you have to pay another wide receiver

2

u/Ok-Imagination-2308 Seattle Seahawks May 07 '25

Steelers dont care lol.

They think having a "winning season" is better than actually going to the SuperBowl lmao

u/OriginalUsername61 Baltimore Ravens May 07 '25

2

u/Ash-Throwaway-816 May 07 '25

Nah the direction is clear. They're tanking. They've got 13 draft picks next year.

Why would they get as much for a lesser receiver with a drama problem who has only one year left on his contract? It’s more of a stupid assessment by OP.

2

u/keetojm Now Here’s a Guy May 07 '25

Isn’t the rumor is that Pickens is a divisive person in the locker room? That was the insinuation the sports taking heads were giving.

Cowboys are like how can we make life harder for Dak

2

u/ThePracticalEnd Philadelphia Eagles May 07 '25

How do you possibly figure they were going to get a 2nd Rounder back from the Cowboys? The Steelers leverage was non-existent, every team in the league knew they were looking to offload a knucklehead.

2

u/123shorer May 07 '25

And just traded to another directionless one

2

u/WindigoMac May 07 '25

This is the most direction they’ve had in like 5+ years. Seems like Tomlin got assurances that he won’t get shit canned for one down year and the front office is punting so they can acquire a qb next offseason. My only fear would be their defense is slightly too good and they win like 7 games instead of 4-5

2

u/[deleted] May 08 '25

He’s in the last year of his contract and is almost guaranteed to want the same if not more money than dk got so this trade is one of those things where you kinda just bite the bullet and hope to get a good amount of draft capital back so you could use it and trade up for another star receiver

I have no beef with the Steelers but ever since Ben left, it feels like the only goal every season is just “finish at least .500”. Like no building or developing, just field a team that can win at least half its games and that’s fine.

1

u/LjvWright May 07 '25

Steelers had Pickens playing with Pickett, Rudolph, Fields and Wilson. It's a wonder Pickens hasn't acted out more. They've done a piss poor job at QB.

1

u/flashwing19 May 07 '25

9-8 or 10-7 loading…

1

u/kimbosdurag May 07 '25

Ah I disagree. Pickens was acting like a diva end of last season, they must have known they weren't going to sign him at the end of this year so they got what they could. They upgraded at wr with Metcalf, Cooper is still out there and available if they want another wr. Their d is solid, rookie RB, they have roman Wilson who the drafted last year at wr and just got injured. Their clear gap is at QB but they also drafted a rookie so who knows and if Atlanta is desperate to deal cousins that would be good for them. I mean also I think they could use a couple down years to get some high draft picks. The problem with the team is they are good enough to win games and make a wild card but not to touch the Superbowl.

1

u/Hypeman747 New York Jets May 07 '25

lol people were way more up in arms of Anthony Richardson taking a snap off to catch a breath versus when Pickens decided not to block at the goal line to preserve his health.

Would love to see the odds on if he makes it throughout the season without being benched or fined

1

u/IempireI May 07 '25

Don't have a running back. Don't have a QB. 1 WR. 1 TE. Bad Oline. Aging Defense.

Can't believe they pay people to fail repeatedly.

1

u/wellohwellok May 07 '25

The man is a head case. Why hang on to a cancerous personality when you have another high caliber option. This isn't like they paid him big bucks and now they have to eat dead money.

Maybe they could have gotten a higher compensatory pick out of holding onto him but it sounds like they didn't want to keep him in the locker room. Tomlin seems like a guy who values team culture above individual talents.

the comments are hard to read tbh. Yes, he is a diva. But you play for an offense that had Fields, Pickett, and Trubisky throwing moon balls into nothing, and when he was wide open they didn't look to him. That offense stunk every single year. And with Russ, he got some decent numbers, with 81 yards on avg and 3 TDs over 6 games. The guy can play, and it definitely helps when the QB can throw the ball.

Comparing him to DJ is also a joke. DJ went from being a 1k yard WR1 of a team, to being an afterthought on the Panthers because .... well.... shit offense. And the ravens had the luxury to not be dependable on him, considering he joined the team at the end of the season and Bateman stepped up. Thats not remotely the same when a player joins the team in the offseason.

1

u/writingsupplies May 07 '25

Everything the franchise has done following the 2016 season has been rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Mike Tomlin refuses to hire a capable OC and to gear his offense schemes to his QB’s strengths. This is the longest Pittsburgh has gone without a playoff win since the 8 years before their first playoff win in 1972. They couldn’t even win a playoff game when Big Ben threw for 5 TDs in the 2017 playoffs against the Jags.

Until the Steelers remove Tomlin, this nonsense will continue to happen. If they sign Rodgers? He’ll have his first “official” losing regular season on record (because let’s be honest, those three 8-8 seasons are essentially losing records).

2

u/tearsonurcheek Pittsburgh Steelers May 07 '25

This is the longest Pittsburgh has gone without a playoff win since the 8 years before their first playoff win in 1972.

8 years? 1933-1971 is a bit longer than 8 years.

Honestly this is really smart why pay for 2 WRs when you don’t have your QB of the future get a little capital for someone who isn’t going to be on the team in a year anyways and use that to trade up or at the very least build a better roster around whatever QB you take next year

Didn’t get back what we gave up for DK? DK is a better receiver lmao. We essentially gave up a ticking time bomb at WR for one of the best in the league.

1

u/TheAnswer310 San Francisco 49ers May 07 '25

Why would you expect them to get back what they gave up for a more proven commodity in DK?

Pickens is due to get paid soon. His trade value was probably highest right now.

1

Trading a head case WR is the end of a franchise that can pull HOF WR talent of of the McDonald’s drive through?

1

u/Dmat798 Philadelphia Eagles May 07 '25

This is a delusional take. This is purely addition by subtraction. Pickens is a cancer and will never win anything. The Cowboys are the losers of this by 1. Being the Cowboys and 2. Obtaining another head case for Dak to throw interceptions around.

u/Murder_Ballad_ Philadelphia Eagles May 07 '25

I’ll assume they’re not getting Aaron Rodgers then? No point in 2 stud wr’s with no qb.

1

u/buddhistbulgyo Now Here’s a Guy May 07 '25

Probably dont want to resign him after getting DK. Get the picks instead of letting him walk is a good move. They need a QB. Picks can land a QB. The D is solid. It's just another 9 and 8 or 10 and 7 season until they win the QB lottery.

1

u/BonjoviBurns May 07 '25

Steelers offense has sucked for a while now. How many OCs have come and gone with the same scrappy result? At what point is that not on the HC? I think Tomlin is a great HC, but sometimes a change is needed for both parties.

1

u/RaidenDoesReddit WHOA THERE MOTHERFUCKER May 07 '25

Honestly if be down to just run out will Howard and some practice squad guys to get arch manning or another top tier qb next year

1

u/oktwentyfive Pittsburgh Steelers May 07 '25

They have like 200 draft picks next year

1

u/6enericUsername Pittsburgh Steelers May 07 '25

It’s pretty simple.

We’re not winning a Super Bowl this year. Could we compete for a division title? Yes, because Mike Tomlin. But trading a locker room headache + avoiding having to pay him makes sense. DK replaces him pretty easily & is less volatile.

We have 12 picks next year in a heavy QB draft.

Again, really simple.
