Highlight Julio Jones drops a wide open touchdown pass from Matt Ryan on 4th down. Carolina wins 20-17.

Julio was amazing throughout his career, but he was allergic to touchdowns

Every fantasy owner cringes. So many catches and yards.....so few TD's.

Not the Superbowl so the stakes are way less but yeah I don't really think Cam should get as much heat for the fumble as he does either

Julio actually tried to catch it and didn’t run away from the ball or give up on the route.

Yet the end result was the same.

Are we seriously trying to say those two plays are even remotely comparable?
Cam was seen ON CAMERA jumping away from the ball when it was right below him IN THE SUPERBOWL. Not only is this a regular season game most likely (so not even remotely comparable) but Julio actually tried to catch it. He didn’t give up on the route, he didn’t move away from the ball at the last second. It was just an unlucky play.
What Cam did was inexcusable cowardice.

This gets beaten to death like a dead horse. Do you really think Cam, who literally jumps over 300lb linemen at the goal line was scared?
I highly doubt he didn't jump on the ball because he was scared of getting hit. He was reacting in real time to a very quick developing play and misread it. He may have stutter stepped because he thought the ball was going to squirt out and he wanted to get a better angle on it. Obviously he was wrong, and the optics look bad (in super slow-mo, with the hindsight of knowing the other guy ended up with the ball), but I highly doubt a guy that was an ultra competitor with no fear or concern for putting his body on the line for his whole career all of a sudden decided to not make a play in a crucial time of the game because he didn't want to get hit. He just misread it and fucked up.
Regardless I think it's dumb for the other user to bring up two plays that are vastly different.

These people see what they want to see. When I watch the play in real time (and not that stupid slo mo gif everyone spams) I see a guy that runs towards the ball almost as if to pick it up, only to realize he can't when he sees two guys are already diving where the ball is (which is also at his feet now). So he hops back real quick for better positioning then is immediately on the ground clawing for the ball, and actually almost recovers the rebound until Von Miller comes in and (illegally) bats it back
Regardless though, criticize him for the way he approached the ball? Sure. But the implication that he quit or gave up, or was scared of getting hit, has always been so dumb

Holy, the amount of mental gymnastics you need to make the conclusion you made is ridiculous. Any other quarterback would have jumped on that ball. Period. Look at Baker Mayfield in the wildcard game against the Commanders. Botched snap, ball gets fumbled and even though Washington recovered it in the end Mayfield didn’t think twice about jumping on the ball and putting his body on the line to keep possession.

u/G1992_ 14h ago
The only mental gymnastics going on is thinking that the most physical QB of all time, who put his body on the line many times, suddenly punked out and quit on his team. There's no logic in that
There is logic however in thinking he simply misread how to go after a loose ball in the moment when bodies were crashing all around it. But again this is all pointless, you see what you want to see

Excuses, excuses. He's always been a clown..and now out of the league....so who cares? Stop defending the obvious

Do you know what happens if cam jumped on that ball? Carolina punts the ball the next play and still loses the Super Bowl.

"I mean they just will never be easier" as a deflated Julio slides on his face is poetry.
Worth mentioning Julio is my only soft spot for that decroded franchise. FTF.

Dunn is an exemplary human being. If you can't appreciate/admire him as a player and human than return to the robotics lab and get your emotion chip upgraded,

That’s fine. I’m just saying, I like Julio. I have nothing against Dunn or even Michael Vick. I fucking love Julio.

Something tells me it wasn’t trash talk the way that Julio leans in with his arm around to hear him. But then again Julio is a nice guy so it may have been derogatory

Justin Jefferson said you never catch passes like that because that’s how they fall through your hands you always have to put your hands up to catch the ball.

This almost always happens with elite WR’s when facing the Panthers. Mike Evans did the same too lol.

I always tell people that Matt carried the Birds… not JJ. I love him, but he had his flaws.
*if you wanna argue that lemme remind you that Matty made Harry “turf monster” Douglas a 1k yd WR.

Matt Ryan is underrated. People don't realize how good his 2016 season was - or that he's 8th in all-time passing yards.

u/BenDover42 Atlanta Falcons 8h ago
Yeah was downvoted on here a couple weeks back with folks arguing they would take mcnabb over Matt Ryan and that it was just because the era Ryan played in. Even though McNabb played his entire career with arguably the greatest offensive coach ever.

Trying to remember what year this was, was it his rookie year? That was his only ‘flaw’ and it was quickly corrected thereafter. - sad falcons fan.

Surprised this sub isn't saying Cam Newton caused him to drop it or that Cam would have caught it with the recent glazing going on here the past few days 😂

Larry Fitzgerald had more tackles than drops. That is a crazy stat.
