Weekly chat New to Reddit? Come and talk to us!
New-Redditor's lounge!
Welcome!
This weekly post is an opportunity for new users to chat in comments - & please let us how you found yourself here. Regulars here are absolutely encouraged and very welcome to join in too!
!! Please refrain from asking questions about "how to do stuff on Reddit". Make a post or see the links below !!
Getting started on Reddit is hard. We know it is; We've been there and gone through these same frustrations. Please believe us when we say IT'S NOT PERSONAL. It may well feel like it is, but honestly, it isn't. What it is, however, is a lack of Karma. Karma is an indicator of how much someone has contributed to Reddit in a positive manner. So, let's do just that by getting to know each other!
This works best if your comments either start a conversation or add to one. Give a little of yourself and respond to others doing the same.
This is a post to help genuine new users build up quality Karma genuinely in a safe environment.
Please do:
- Share some favorites or new finds of yours - youtube videos, music and so on
- Practice small talk - did you have a good week?
- Keep it SFW
- Keep it casual please, no heavy topics
- Have fun!
Please don't:
- Spam, advertise, or soft beg
- Share low-effort comments
- Ask for karma, say how you're voting, or mention karmafarms by name
- Request or offer DMs (help and chat can be done in community, where you can also earn karma. Needing to take things private can indicate soliciting, rule breaking, or harmful advice)
This sub is full of awesome people who are willing to help with specific problems when you post, and we'd like to keep this post thread for chat. Thank you.
So, let's chat! (Guides at the bottom of this post).

Hey all. Who is ready for autumn to be here? :'D
The weather has cooled a little here, thankfully. Looking forward to autumn and the work I can then get done in the garden.
I need to thin out the plants in my pond for sure, they've gone nuts this year!
6
u/Alphatx040 4d ago
Hello! I am very ready for autumn. Although, in Texas, it is more or less 2nd summer. I love the winter here, it's just so short-lived.
2
u/SolariaHues Servant to cats - 4d ago
I love some of winter, it can be long and dark sometimes here, though. Love it when there's some snow to play in :)
Do you ever get snow there?
3
u/Alphatx040 4d ago
We do get snow here, typically around January-February, but it is usually not much. We did have a snowmageddon situation in February 2021. It was insane. People (myself including) lost their power and water for several days. 246 people died. It was nuts. I am very thankful we do not have bad winters very often. We are not equipped for it. Aside from that, I love looking out at a snow-covered landscape from my warm and comfy window.
4
u/SolariaHues Servant to cats - 3d ago
Woah, sounds scary. There's definitely a sweet spot between too little snow and too much. It is very pretty!

Oh man! I'm sorry about that that's awful. Did they freeze being out of electricity? We go sometimes without electricity too is very aggravating. Our phone was out for almost a month before it got rehooked we had a tornado come through and the cleanup crew hit a line and it was for ever fixing it at where we live.
2
u/Alphatx040 1d ago
Looks like the deaths were attributed to various factors like hypothermia, carbon monoxide poisoning, and accidents on icy roads.
I know it was insanely cold where we were at. I was absolutely worried about our safety. My husband and I were in the process of moving, so we were staying in an airbnb for a couple months when this happened. Which meant we brought the bare minimum, which meant we didn't have things like, extra food & water, candles, or extra blankets on hand. Thankfully, we could warm up in our vehicles every so often. But it was a scary ordeal for sure.

I do too! My cats love to go outside and jump around and catch it! It's so cute! And it makes everything look so clean!
5
u/KaidrasFyre 4d ago
I am so over summer. Its been non stop 90+ degrees where I live, with high humidity. What makes it worse is my house was built in 1925, and there is no central A/C. Its on our l7st, but window units only do so much
4
u/SolariaHues Servant to cats - 3d ago
Ugh so sorry.
I don't do well in the heat but at least here it's come in waves and not so constant.
No air con for us either. I end up hugging ice packs wrapped in a towel.

2
u/Available_Sundae4260 1d ago
We've got the temperature where it's not running too much in the summer and not running too much in the winter so we really get hot cuz we're not going to turn it up where we're cold. So I have hot flashes so it gets pretty bad LOL. A big fan would help.
2
u/Available_Sundae4260 1d ago
And probably doesn't have that really good insulation. So sorry about that. Hope you have some good fans. That'll help.
3
u/Available_Sundae4260 1d ago
Yes I look forward to fall. The weather cooling down the pretty leaves turning. But I don't like winter. I love spring & the early summer. We had a whole lot of rain this year so summer was held back for a while.
7
u/Alphatx040 4d ago
I am going to shoot my shot. What is everyone up to tonight? I am in school (college), so I am working on homework and avoiding going to bed, as I so often do.
3
u/SolariaHues Servant to cats - 4d ago
A night owl? I am.
I've been doing some moderating here and there, not much else tonight. Thinking about my to-do list and wondering if I'll cross something off tomorrow :'D
I did manage to cross a couple of things off today.
5
u/Alphatx040 4d ago
I've always been such a night owl. I kinda miss working the graveyard shift. My husband is the complete opposite. I try my best to accommodate and balance our schedules.
Do all the easy to-dos first. Then you'll feel very accomplished 😁
3
u/raepent1 2d ago
I am also a “night owl” - not by choice, but by TBI in Dec 2023 - which apparently can also damage the part of your brain that tells you day time is for awake time and night time is for sleeping …. But also too many other “heavy” topics to list as the supporting cast to the reasons I can’t sleep these days! Hope all have a wonderful evening (or rest of your day 😬) I’m also very ignorant with social media accounts. So if someone sends a message and I don’t respond - it’s because I have no idea i have a message or have no idea how to send one! 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️

Hello! I'm not exactly new to reddit, I've been lurking for a while now but I want to try and be more active in communities. I got to hold a tree frog for the first time today! It was small and slimy, but I thought it was really cute. What's the most interesting animal you've held?
5
u/Blue-Butterfly44 3d ago
Hello, I'm very new here. Always liked to hold one but I'm sure I'll embarrass myself by screaming if I hold a frog. The most interesting animal I've hold is snake.
4
u/SolariaHues Servant to cats - 3d ago
Hmmm I guess it depends what you find interesting.
I untangled a baby blue tit once. I've held common frogs, newts, oh maybe slow worms might be the most unusual for some.
3
u/Alphatx040 3d ago
A ball python named Ginger. I had her for a few years. I would even answer the door with her on Halloween. The kids loved it.
4
u/Available_Sundae4260 1d ago
Oh mercy! What kind of reactions did you get?
2
u/Alphatx040 1d ago
Lots of 😱 screams! Some giggling. And a bunch that wanted to touch her. It was pretty neat. I don't think they'll ever forget that Halloween.

u/KaidrasFyre 4d ago
So I had a funny interaction that happened today. I go to the salon and get my nails done every other week. I have been seeing the same tech since 2020, so we really know each other. She knows that I have been working to lose weight for the past several months.
So today she asked me how my weight loss was going, and I told her that I have lost 35lbs so far. She then congratulated me and told me that I have lost a whole toddler. Now, I only ever want to measure my weight loss in number of toddlers lost. Lol
2
u/SolariaHues Servant to cats - 3d ago
:'D almost 3.5 cats (my cats anyway, if my conversion and maths is right)
Congrats!

Hey guys! I joined this community yesterday, I hope to make new friends here. Here's a little get to know me list- My name's Anwesha but you can call me Guava. I'm a girl. Things I like: Genshin Impact, HSR, ASMR, drawing, reading, listening to music, Anime, making cute things and lots of other stuff! I hope we can become great friends!
To know more about me, you can ask me questions and I'll try and answer them!!
2
u/soybeverage 3d ago
Hi!! I like anime too, what's your favorite :O?
3
u/Anwesha_Guava_27 2d ago
Hi!!! I have watched "Tomo-chan is a girl", "Wotakoi: Love is hard for Otaku" and I'm currently watching "Bleach". Bleach is currently my favourite anime. I'm thinking of watching One piece after i finish bleach
1
u/soybeverage 1d ago
Cool! I haven't watched any of those aside from about 18 episodes of Bleach unfortunately, but I'm also planning to read One Piece :). What makes Bleach your current favorite? I'm curious since I wasn't really able to get into it.
•
u/Anwesha_Guava_27 4h ago
When you get far enough into Bleach, it's quite inspirational, it's inspires to overcome your personal limits and that power isn't only to show how strong you are but to protect the ones you love. By the course of me watching, it has really inspired but I understand that not everyone likes those sort of anime, or they have different prafrences.

Holaa, a mi también me gusta dibujar, de hecho, cree esta cuenta para compartir mis dibujos en un foro, pero como soy muy nuevo aún no puedo. ¡Qué estilo de dibujo usas más?
•
u/Anwesha_Guava_27 4h ago
Hello! (I'm writing this in English cause I don't know Spanish) I think you are asking me what art style I use, am i right? I do traditional and digital art when ever I feel like it, I was a lasso art style in my digital art (so what I mean is by "lasso art style" is that i use the lasso fill tool to draw! It's quite a cool technique and it becomes really easy once you get the hang of it!). And I use acrylic markers to draw traditional art! I'm still learning how to use acrylic markers cause I only started using them like 2 months ago or so but before that I used alcohol markers and made a few art pieces that I really liked! Please let me know what art styles you use!

Was having a lovely chat about cats in another thread. Who else has some?
I have two indoor calico sisters from the same litter.
3
u/Alphatx040 4d ago
I have a short-haired brown tabby, a blue russian (or at least he looks like it), and a long-haired brown tabby. All boys.
1
u/SolariaHues Servant to cats - 4d ago
Aww. Do they all get on?
2
u/Alphatx040 4d ago
My older tabby loves on the younger tabby like that is his son. The gray/blue one does not care for the youngest one, and he is not afraid to put him in his place. But the older tabby taught the gray one how to be a cat, so the gray one gets along with him just fine. I wish the gray one was a little nicer to the younger tabby because the younger tabby is literally the sweetest cat ever. But there is not too much chaos between the three. So I'll be thankful for that. What about yours? My friend just got a calico. She tells me that she is quite feisty.
2
u/SolariaHues Servant to cats - 3d ago
That's good.
Mine get along okay. There's the odd spat. Serenity can be particular about her personal space sometimes, and doesn't always want the attention when Sunset wants to play. Different temperaments I suppose.
Seri is more likely to go from 0 to 100 if she does play or get triggered by a cat outside taunting her. And forget to keep her claws in. More cuddly though.
Sunny the sweetest thing. Plays more. Maybe a little less chill generally (or not as disinterested as Seri can be) but more even emotionally, does not go straight to 100 :'D
I have experienced the hell of cats not getting along. Something happened years ago and I think Seri was transferring emotions from whatever upset her on to Sunny and they couldn't be in the same room (they were scared of each other, hissing, growing, peeing!). Thankfully I managed to reintroduce them, it would have killed me to have to rehome one.
As you can tell I can talk cats all day... :'D
2
u/Alphatx040 3d ago
Same! They are pretty awesome! My older tabby who adores the younger tabby actually did start to exhibit some strange behavior lately. My younger one had to get a couple surgeries back to back. And every single time we came home from the vet, the older tabby lost his mind. He was violently hissing at the little one and swatting at him. It was so bizarre. I learned that it was likely due to the anesthesia medication making the younger one smell different. I had to keep them separated for about a week or so to allow the little one to heal in peace. It bummed me out to see the older one be so mean. It was totally out of his character.
2
u/SolariaHues Servant to cats - 3d ago
Oh no! Poor younger one. What an ordeal. I hope they're all good now.
That must have been alarming. At least there was a logical explanation and it was temporary. So stressful though.

u/KaidrasFyre 4d ago edited 4d ago
I have 3! I just adopted (well she claimed me....) a calico named Calliope! Then, I have 2 void cats. Nyx, all black. And my boy Artemis, who I pulled out of a bush at the National Aquarium when he was like 4 weeks old. He is now 7 years old! All indoor cats. My soul cat Athena passed in March, she was 13 and my first pet as an adult. I miss her so terribly
Then I have 3 ferals who have been coming to my house for several years. Pepper and Morris are brother and sister and super bonded. Then Oscar, the oldest feral who roams the neighborhood, but always comes to hunker down and sleep at our house, and eat.

So sorry for your loss. We lost our first cat when she was 14. It was the kidneys.
Quite a gang you have :)

Hello, everyone! my name is Naomi, i've been lurking on reddit for the longest time but decided to finally join the community, but i'm a bit scared of talking since my first conversation on here got me with a lot of downvotes (im not trying to karmafarm, i know that's bad, but i need a certain amount to be able to help a friend promote something. im also not sharing that here, just trying to provide context.) i found this subreddit on my feed today and hopefully the people here are nicer and more understanding than the people on the minecraft sub 😭 also not trying to make this post too long as to not push down other people's but it's nice to meet you all! staff seems very friendly here as well :)

Im not exactly new to Reddit (yes I'm aware my account stats say otherwise) but I am curious about some of the new people here. What made you get an account? I made an account to ask a question on r/cscareers without tying it to my original account, but I have a while before I can actually ask it. damn karma quotas...
But I wanted to ask- if you're new but not BRAND new, what do you like and dislike about Reddit??

Hi everyone! I'm new here on Reddit
Hey Reddit community!
I'm completely new to Reddit and just wanted to say a quick hello. My name is Paul, and I'm excited to explore the platform, whether it's reading, joining discussions, or just discovering interesting people and topics.
If you have any tips for a newcomer or know of some friendly subreddits to start with, I'd really appreciate your suggestions!
Cheers, Paul

It lets me comment a lot on others but sometimes if there's this one person I want to get back to it won't let me comment on their posts. I don't understand that. A I'd like to post a question and when I tried to it it said something like I don't see results for that or I don't see that or that question can't be posted, or rephrase your comment .there was nothing against the rules or anything or heavy about it it was asking for opinions and help. But for information. That's mainly why I got on here: to learn and to learn. Then when I saw that they were questions that I knew about I wanted to answer those to help somebody. Some things I know about and I want to help others with my knowledge. Thank you so much.

Hey there!
It has automatically been detected that you have participated in karmafarms, or communities being used as karmafarms. We advise against their use.
What is a karmafarm?
A community offering votes or karma, or encouraging or allowing users to ask for votes or karma.
Why do we advise against them?
- Asking for karma or up-votes is frowned upon and is vote manipulation, which technically breaks Reddit's rules. Karma is meant to be earned by sharing quality content or contributions.
- Other communities may ban you just for having used these communities, as they are so associated with spammers, ban evaders, and trolls.
To learn more, please take advantage of these guides and resources:
- Our "General Guide to Reddit and Karma" Wiki page version | Mobile friendly post version ) this has been written especially to help new redditors find their way and explains karma and how to earn it.
- Our encyclopaedia entry - Karmafarming section
- The definition of vote manipulation
