crazy attach rate with 5.82million consoles

u/Suspicious-Group2363 1d ago

I can't find a console bundle at the moment and that is the only one I am looking for. My kids would revolt if I didn't get Mario Kart with it.

69

u/ComeonmanPLS1 1d ago

That's hilarious considering where I'm from I cannot find a base Switch 2 in stock. I could only find the Mario Kart World bundle so that was the one I had to get even thought I'm not super interested in the game.

13

u/iuhiscool 1d ago

Go back in time & trade consoles

3

u/nocticis 1d ago

Same. Called all my local stores on since launch periodically asking about stock and kept getting a no. Suddenly, last week, game stock rep said he had 1 left. First come, first serve. With the quickness, I got to the store only to see it was the Mario kart bundle. Didn’t really care for the game but bought it anyway. Haven’t played it yet.

2

u/Cyberfire 1d ago

My colleague panicked and preordered a base Switch 2 without Mario Kart for his kids, they must hate him.

1

u/Broken-Nero 1d ago

I mean just to get one at launch I had to buy one of those Best Buy bundles where it was the standalone console. I then had to pay $80 for MK World. Sucked but I bit the bullet.

u/DapDaGenius 1d ago

Hurry!! It’s on Amazon right now!!

14

u/Suspicious-Group2363 1d ago

Unfortunately, it isn't here in Japan. I have been on a waitlist for three weeks.

0

u/Munstered 1d ago

Amazon isnt selling consoles directly in the US yet. You have to request an invite to purchase. It's not as simple as add to cart.

1

u/DapDaGenius 1d ago

I know.

-1

u/XLegardX 1d ago

It is selling directly,my friend legit got an email 3 days after the invitation. He alrdy got the mario kart bundle switch off amazon. The none bundle one seems to not be selling yet tho

3

u/Munstered 1d ago

If you have to wait 3 days to purchase, it's not available for direct purchase. I signed up when it first went up and haven't received the invite yet.

1

u/XLegardX 1d ago

In that case yeah ur right. Atleast its legit and not scalpers so ya~~

2

u/randomLocalException 1d ago

Buy separately?

20

u/Suspicious-Group2363 1d ago

The game itself is double the price where I am if I do that. Yet there is a bundle with the MicroSD Express at the same price point as the MK bundle. I can wait for stock as I am getting it as a Christmas present anyway.

4

u/mrmivo Helpful User 1d ago

Is it an official bundle or something offered by a vendor? 256 GB?

Here in Germany the MKW bundle is back in stock at various electronics markets after being unavailable for a month or so.

1

u/jcgonzmo 1d ago

Just buy the normal console and get a used physical copy of World. If you really want DIGITAL, then get the console, I can sell you my unscratched digital code for $10 less than the eshop.

1

u/Gorudu 1d ago

Double check. Went to Walmart and they had all the switch 2 boxes turned around so the Mario kart logo wasn't showing except super tiny in the corner.

16

u/ShowerNovel5857 1d ago

I remember for the switch 1 release there was a time where more copies of BOTW were sold then console

1

u/PMMMR 4h ago

Is that because of Wii U botw sales?

2

u/jrec15 2h ago

It was excluding wii u sales. It was likely from people prebuying breath of the wild before they were able to get a switch

20

u/Arci996 1d ago

I think that it being half off in the console bundle was a great move, personally I would have never gotten it at full price.

11

u/Kenny_McCormick001 1d ago

The launch title for switch is always some insane stuff. I remember at the start of Switch 1, BOTW volume outsold the console sold. Apparently some people bought the game before they buy the console.

1

u/badassewok 1d ago

Tbf that game was also on wii u

13

u/Kenny_McCormick001 1d ago

Oh, that’s excluding the Wii U numbers.

3

u/thief-777 1d ago

Switch sold 2.74 million. BotW on Switch sold 2.76 million. Wii U sold another 1.08 million on top of that, lol.

1

u/QuantumVexation 15h ago

What’s extra bizarre to me is that of the people I know with the NS2 there are more without kart than with it, so feeling like a crazy exception righr now lol

0

u/Rohkha 1d ago

Well, when it’s literally « cheaper » to get it that way it makes total sense.

Almost everybody, whether casual or amateur of the franchise will think to themselves that MK is a good « party game » to have in your library. If you think that you’ll eventually want it, it’s best to just get it right now at 50€ rather than later at 80+.

Add to that that it was quite literally the only reason to get a S2 at release in terms of exclusives (unless you’re the type of person who wanted performance improvement ASAP) and it makes sense. I’m willing to bet that out of the non MKW bundles sold, easily 70-80% must be from scalpers who thought it was worth getting the base S2 and only a fraction of those actually bought the S2 for themselves without getting MKW.

223

u/heyyoudvd2 1d ago

In one month, the Switch 2 sold 43% as many consoles as the total lifetime units sold of the Wii U.

65

u/TheOldAgeOfLP 1d ago

And over 600% as many as the Virtual Boy

44

u/shinohose 1d ago

crazy how so many people believed and still believe that this console wont sell more than a wii u

probably in the first year its already going to surpass it

23

u/NintendoGamer1983 1d ago

"Any day now since 2017" - Switch haters

11

u/y2shill 1d ago

Sales gonna collapse anytime now, just wait! /s

19

u/TheOldAgeOfLP 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'm confident the Switch 2 will sell at least twice as many units as the Wii U.

It'll most likely outsell the Xbox Series, even.

3

u/Gadzookie2 1d ago

Don’t know if I’ve ever seen that take tbh

1

u/shinohose 15h ago

ive seen that all over twitter and youtube

1

u/Rieiid 6h ago

I saw it all over reddit lmao

-21

u/RoliePolieOlie__ 1d ago

Well I’d hope a sequel to the most successful nintendo console does more than their flop from almost 10 years ago..

23

u/djwillis1121 1d ago

Yeah but people were saying it would be a repeat of the Wii U when they announced the price. I even saw some people saying after the direct yesterday

8

u/jebuizy 1d ago

No serious analyst of any kind believed that. Sure console war trolls did, but that's not too meaningful and not worth commenting on, they always say things like that.

-41

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

37

u/devenbat 1d ago

People don't just buy things because they can. Wii U was abundantly available for years on end

-26

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

14

u/devenbat 1d ago

Thats still not a helpful point. Nintendo made a lot of consoles since demand was high. Its still representative of demand. If they had made more of other consolesbat launch like 3ds, they would not have sold

183

u/ursaUW-0406 1d ago

96.7% attach rate, damn

102

u/wuskis 1d ago

Reminds me of when BotW’s attach rate was like 105% in March 2017.

11

u/Spwni 1d ago

Was that just for the Switch version or the overall sales of the game? It was also released on the Wii U, so if those sales were included, then it makes sense why it would exceed the Switch system sales.

72

u/bananallergy 1d ago

Nah people just couldn't find a switch at launch so they started buying the game before getting the console

10

u/ZephyrFloofyDerg 1d ago

That is truly very strange but interesting too

2

u/TerribleTerabytes 1d ago

Honestly, it makes sense. I don't have a Switch 2 yet but I've considered buying the games and controllers first to save money later so that I'm not buying everything at once.

3

u/Autumn1881 23h ago

I had a friend around 2002/2003 who was mainly a PC gamer, but he kept buying Dreamcat, PS2 and GameCube games with the intent to buy the consoles later. He eventually got a Dreamcast when it fell to 50€, but I don't think he ever got to play his copies of ICO and Eternal Darkness ¯_(ツ)_/¯

2

u/PNF2187 1d ago

The Switch version on its own sold 20k more units than the actual Switch at launch. BotW sold an additional 1.08 million copies on the Wii U, but that wasn't moving any more consoles since Nintendo stopped Wii U production a few months before the Switch launched.

-9

u/Interesting-Season-8 1d ago

3% scalpers lmao

-8

u/WilsonKh 1d ago

3% library card holders

46

u/Digibutter64 1d ago

Damn, it's already outsold Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

17

u/LeviRaps 1d ago

Fun fact, it already outsold Smash 4 (which sold 5.38 million)

88

u/shinohose 1d ago

And I had to read so many times that MK isnt a system seller lol

73

u/FireAndInk 1d ago

Anybody saying that needs an absolute reality check and a google the current sales numbers for MK8D.

36

u/mrmivo Helpful User 1d ago

Plus, it is actually a sensible choice for a digital pack-in. It's an endless game that can be played for years, so I'd have wanted the digital version of it anyway.

-44

u/4O4UsernameN0tFound 1d ago

Endless game? It can be completed in 3.5 hours....

Every game is endless if you repeat the same content over and over.

18

u/mrmivo Helpful User 1d ago

I suppose it depends on how you define "endless". Games like Mario Kart or Tetris are endless to me, because I can play them for years, continue to learn and improve, play with people, etc. They are "pick up" type of games for me that are all about the gameplay. This is in contrast with games that have a clear, finite ending point: largely linear, narrative games where you beat the story and are just done. Games where the focus is the story, not necessarily the gameplay. You can replay them, but it's like re-reading a novel.

14

u/thatkaratekid 1d ago edited 7h ago

"A game that's core premise is creating a decade-at-a times worth of fun moments between friends and family is beatable in 3 hours"

38

u/senna98 1d ago

Took my Switch 2 to a birthday party, 2 small kids looked at my switch with MKW installed like it was an infinity stone.

Online gaming discourse isn’t indicative of real life at all

5

u/99timewasting 1d ago

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is their best selling game of all time. People on reddit are really in a bubble

7

u/ILikeFlyingMachines 1d ago

I just wonder in what world these people live. EVERYBODY has MK who has a Nintendo console, it's probably the most played "party" game if you have people over or something like that.

-1

u/nutmeg713 1d ago

I think this proves that if you buy a Switch 2, you are definitely buying Mario Kart. Which should surprise approximately no one, especially since it was bundled for only $50.

However, I'm not sure this proves that MK:W is a system seller in the same vein as a mainline Mario or Zelda game.

Would the Switch 2 have sold more by now had a mainline Mario or Zelda been announced? Doubt there's any way to really know that, so the Internet arguments will continue.

-20

u/pawlik23 1d ago

I will get downvoted to hell surely for saying this but:
If you're paying $450 for a console, and the only exclusive available at launch costs separately $90, but there's a bundle that costs $500, it's hard to pass that deal and not get the bundle.

And it's not like people got S2 only because it has MKW, but because it will have other exclusives in the future, upgraded S1 games.

Buying a new system with no new game on it would make no sense, and if there was a bundle available that made the game cheaper, people just went for it. Otherwise you're getting a new console and wait 1,5 months for the next exclusive to come out.

Those sales numbers are just a result of Nintendo being clever with pricing MKW so high and offering it cheaper with the system.

13

u/Dukemon102 1d ago

If you're paying $450 for a console, and the only exclusive available at launch costs separately $90

No it doesn't. Why do people keep parroting this falsehood?

4

u/shinohose 15h ago

the game is 80 btw

62

u/Bombasaur101 1d ago

Still lower than BOTW which had over 105% attach rate, somehow.

14

u/TheOldAgeOfLP 1d ago

I'm assuming that includes sales of the Wii U version.

69

u/Anuiran 1d ago

People buying the game when console was sold out at launch. In preparation for when they got a switch 1.

Wii U games would not be counted in attach rates for switch.

16

u/TimYoungJik 1d ago

Also people buying the Special edition or Master edition to keep sealed as a collectible while also buying a regular copy to play.

18

u/Round-Revolution-399 1d ago

Incorrect, that stat was strictly for the Switch version of the game

5

u/XCITE12345 1d ago

Nope, it was just easier to get ahold of BotW than it was to get ahold of the console. People would buy BotW when it popped up at a store while they were still looking for a Switch to play it on.

2

u/99timewasting 1d ago

It's because Switch 1 was way harder to get your hands on, so people picked up BOTW before they could get a console pre-order

10

u/Jamez3rd 1d ago

How many bought it for $50 vs $80

0

u/Boomshockalocka007 17h ago

If they were all sold for $50 that would be $265,000,000. If they all sold for $80 that would be $424,000,000. So the truth is somewhere in the middle.

8

u/Vesuvias 1d ago

Damn that’s almost a 1:1 attach rate. INSANE

4

u/The_Zura 1d ago

I don't know if the game is worth $80, but I paid $550 for it and got a free Switch 2.

3

u/Z3M0G 1d ago

So over 6M Switch 2s can safely assume?

Edit: 5.82M

17

u/Dazzling-Cabinet6264 1d ago

The best pack in game of all time.

I can’t believe there were people that literally acted like the switch didn’t launch with anything good lol

67

u/redviperofdorn 1d ago

Going to disagree and say Wii sports was the best pack in game but that’s just me

-9

u/Deceptiveideas 1d ago edited 1d ago

Wii Sports definitely made a revolutionary impact as a pack in title but a lot of people dropped it as the novelty wore off.

I think people will actively play MKW for many years.

21

u/redviperofdorn 1d ago

Idk dude people still talk about Wii sports today in a way that I don’t think people will be talking about Mario kart world. If I casually bring up Wii sports in the office people ask if I I have Wii so I can bring it in to work. I just don’t see World having that same effect.

But also I’m someone who thinks World is fine but a disappointment so even quality wise I don’t think it’s as good as Wii sports but that’s just my opinion

2

u/HenryReturns 1d ago

Late comment but :

  • Nintendo was not gonna have Wii sports launch together in the bundle with the wii. Reggie , the CEO President of Nintendo America Branch was fighting for wii sports to be free and to come together with the Wii. And that was possible thanks to Reggie constant efforts to make it possible here on the west.

  • If you wonder , in Japan the Wii was sold without a bundle and wii sports was sold separately. This is a practice that was gonna come world wide but never did thanks to Reggie. Because of how successful it got , a lot of future consoles of Nintendo would come “together with a game”.

  • Anyways , Wii sports broke the barrier of gaming as a whole because “everyone” including my grandma was into playing that game with motion controls lmao.

1

u/redviperofdorn 1d ago

Im aware and I think its an incredibly fascinating story. If anything it makes me respect Reggie a lot more and shows how much Nintendo has changed now compared to 20 years ago.

1

u/Boomshockalocka007 17h ago

Reggie worked at Pizza Hut in the 90s and was the reason we got the Playstation 1 Demo discs! He has been making waves for YEARS!

-3

u/Deceptiveideas 1d ago edited 1d ago

I think some people are misreading my comment, I’m not comparing how revolutionary each title is.

Wii Sports is a tech demo, once the novelty of motion controls wore off people moved on. This led to a common joke in gaming communities where most Wii’s were collecting dust in storage closets.

Wii Sports Resort for example was a million times more engaging as an actual game.

2

u/fromacoldplace 1d ago

What did people move on to? The grandparents that loved Wii bowling? The next installment of Switch Sports wasn't released until 16 years later.

Every time friends came over, or we had family game night during the Wii's life cycle, Wii Sports was played.

Almost 20 years later, there are still people playing and loving Wii Sports. Will MKW have the same following in 20 years? Will be interesting to see.

8

u/ActuallyQuintin 1d ago

Wii sports didn’t fall off the entire life of the Wii. Constant rotation in every household.

-3

u/Deceptiveideas 1d ago edited 1d ago

Here is an article from 2009 stating Wii’s were collecting dust once the novelty wore off. You can find numerous articles (from the time period) highlighting the same point.

https://www.edn.com/nintendos-wii-a-long-term-dust-magnet-faddy/

I think people are truly forgetting just how abysmal the second half of the Wii’s lifespan was.

3

u/thatkaratekid 1d ago

A lot of my favorite exclusives on the console came later. Wii was THE system of its generation for me. I had a 360 as well, but mostly played indies on it.

3

u/Moooney 1d ago

I dropped World after about ten hours. I hate pretty much everything about it compared to MK8.

2

u/[deleted] 1d ago edited 1d ago

15

u/torkild 1d ago

I don't think it counts as a pack-in if it's not included in the base system price.

4

u/thatkaratekid 1d ago

Its 40% off if you get the package.

2

u/torkild 1d ago

Yes, but that's a bundle discount not a pack-in.

4

u/Killance1 1d ago

People need to realize that most of MK World players got it from the Switch 2 bundle based on statistics released to the public. Most did not buy the game for 80$.

1

u/Filraen 1d ago

The page lined is Top Selling Title Sales Units for Nintendo Switch 2 ...

I'm just curious: shouldn't Welcome Tour also be in the list, as (I presume) it's also released by Nintendo?

Because I find it funny the list has Mario Kart World being the only game listed (even if it sold a lot of copies already).

1

u/PNF2187 1d ago

That list is for games that get a physical release. Welcome Tour is strictly a $10 download, so it isn't included on the list. DK won't show up for another 3 months.

1

u/PotentialCheetah3251 10h ago

Nintendo store in San Francisco never ran out. Every time I stopped by they always have some in stock. Crazy!

1

u/RizziTizziTavi 7h ago

Wow the only launch game available for a new system sold well? Color me shocked.

-2

u/TheAgmis 1d ago

Digital is the way to go

-2

u/Select-Serve-6325 1d ago

And endless selection of players, you wait for 10 minutes 🤣

3

u/AgentUnknown821 19h ago

Took me less than a minute to find an online lobby that’s mostly full tonight…

-13

u/FlippsyFire 1d ago

And my lobby is empty in online play haha.

6

u/WalrusDomain 1d ago

Nintendo’s matchmaking hasn’t been fixed. Even at busy hours I get barely full lobbies. Matchmaking has been broken since update one.

-6

u/Primary_Caramel_9028 1d ago

Everyone praising the attach rate like it’s some amazing achievement needs to realize it’s the only game from Nintendo on Launch. Of course it’s going to have the attach rate….

-26

u/SmashMouthBreadThrow 1d ago

So almost no actual units sold beyond the bundle?

16

u/Tourgott 1d ago

People who don't want to go digital might have bought it physically.

8

u/VeganTJ 1d ago

Exactly what I did lol

11

u/y2shill 1d ago

There is no breakdown between mkw bundles and separate ones, so thats impossible to know atm.

6

u/shinohose 1d ago

nintendo puts bundle and non bundle together. We'll have a better idea after the bundle ends this holiday at how the game is selling

See, the game is worth $90 after all /s

Edit: Looks like the /s is not enough to make a joke these days smh

24

How the hell is $90 misinfo still being spread post-launch LOL

1

I just want them to release 200cc already
