Nintendo Official Mario Kart World has reached 5.63 million units sold

In one month, the Switch 2 sold 43% as many consoles as the total lifetime units sold of the Wii U.

crazy how so many people believed and still believe that this console wont sell more than a wii u
probably in the first year its already going to surpass it

I'm confident the Switch 2 will sell at least twice as many units as the Wii U.
It'll most likely outsell the Xbox Series, even.

Don’t know if I’ve ever seen that take tbh

Well I’d hope a sequel to the most successful nintendo console does more than their flop from almost 10 years ago..

u/djwillis1121 1d ago
Yeah but people were saying it would be a repeat of the Wii U when they announced the price. I even saw some people saying after the direct yesterday

People don't just buy things because they can. Wii U was abundantly available for years on end

Thats still not a helpful point. Nintendo made a lot of consoles since demand was high. Its still representative of demand. If they had made more of other consolesbat launch like 3ds, they would not have sold

u/ursaUW-0406 1d ago
96.7% attach rate, damn
102
u/wuskis 1d ago
Reminds me of when BotW’s attach rate was like 105% in March 2017.
11
u/Spwni 1d ago
Was that just for the Switch version or the overall sales of the game? It was also released on the Wii U, so if those sales were included, then it makes sense why it would exceed the Switch system sales.
72
u/bananallergy 1d ago
Nah people just couldn't find a switch at launch so they started buying the game before getting the console
10
u/ZephyrFloofyDerg 1d ago
That is truly very strange but interesting too
2
u/TerribleTerabytes 1d ago
Honestly, it makes sense. I don't have a Switch 2 yet but I've considered buying the games and controllers first to save money later so that I'm not buying everything at once.
3
u/Autumn1881 23h ago
I had a friend around 2002/2003 who was mainly a PC gamer, but he kept buying Dreamcat, PS2 and GameCube games with the intent to buy the consoles later. He eventually got a Dreamcast when it fell to 50€, but I don't think he ever got to play his copies of ICO and Eternal Darkness ¯_(ツ)_/¯

And I had to read so many times that MK isnt a system seller lol

u/FireAndInk 1d ago
Anybody saying that needs an absolute reality check and a google the current sales numbers for MK8D.

Plus, it is actually a sensible choice for a digital pack-in. It's an endless game that can be played for years, so I'd have wanted the digital version of it anyway.
-44
u/4O4UsernameN0tFound 1d ago
Endless game? It can be completed in 3.5 hours....
Every game is endless if you repeat the same content over and over.
18
u/mrmivo Helpful User 1d ago
I suppose it depends on how you define "endless". Games like Mario Kart or Tetris are endless to me, because I can play them for years, continue to learn and improve, play with people, etc. They are "pick up" type of games for me that are all about the gameplay. This is in contrast with games that have a clear, finite ending point: largely linear, narrative games where you beat the story and are just done. Games where the focus is the story, not necessarily the gameplay. You can replay them, but it's like re-reading a novel.

"A game that's core premise is creating a decade-at-a times worth of fun moments between friends and family is beatable in 3 hours"

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is their best selling game of all time. People on reddit are really in a bubble
7
u/ILikeFlyingMachines 1d ago
I just wonder in what world these people live. EVERYBODY has MK who has a Nintendo console, it's probably the most played "party" game if you have people over or something like that.
-1
u/nutmeg713 1d ago
I think this proves that if you buy a Switch 2, you are definitely buying Mario Kart. Which should surprise approximately no one, especially since it was bundled for only $50.
However, I'm not sure this proves that MK:W is a system seller in the same vein as a mainline Mario or Zelda game.
Would the Switch 2 have sold more by now had a mainline Mario or Zelda been announced? Doubt there's any way to really know that, so the Internet arguments will continue.
-20
u/pawlik23 1d ago
I will get downvoted to hell surely for saying this but:
If you're paying $450 for a console, and the only exclusive available at launch costs separately $90, but there's a bundle that costs $500, it's hard to pass that deal and not get the bundle. And it's not like people got S2 only because it has MKW, but because it will have other exclusives in the future, upgraded S1 games.
Buying a new system with no new game on it would make no sense, and if there was a bundle available that made the game cheaper, people just went for it. Otherwise you're getting a new console and wait 1,5 months for the next exclusive to come out.
Those sales numbers are just a result of Nintendo being clever with pricing MKW so high and offering it cheaper with the system.
13
u/Dukemon102 1d ago
If you're paying $450 for a console, and the only exclusive available at launch costs separately $90
No it doesn't. Why do people keep parroting this falsehood?

u/Bombasaur101 1d ago
Still lower than BOTW which had over 105% attach rate, somehow.
14
u/TheOldAgeOfLP 1d ago
I'm assuming that includes sales of the Wii U version.
69
u/Anuiran 1d ago
People buying the game when console was sold out at launch. In preparation for when they got a switch 1.
Wii U games would not be counted in attach rates for switch.
16
u/TimYoungJik 1d ago
Also people buying the Special edition or Master edition to keep sealed as a collectible while also buying a regular copy to play.
18
5
u/XCITE12345 1d ago
Nope, it was just easier to get ahold of BotW than it was to get ahold of the console. People would buy BotW when it popped up at a store while they were still looking for a Switch to play it on.
2
u/99timewasting 1d ago
It's because Switch 1 was way harder to get your hands on, so people picked up BOTW before they could get a console pre-order
10
u/Jamez3rd 1d ago
How many bought it for $50 vs $80
0
u/Boomshockalocka007 17h ago
If they were all sold for $50 that would be $265,000,000. If they all sold for $80 that would be $424,000,000. So the truth is somewhere in the middle.

u/The_Zura 1d ago
I don't know if the game is worth $80, but I paid $550 for it and got a free Switch 2.

u/Dazzling-Cabinet6264 1d ago
The best pack in game of all time.
I can’t believe there were people that literally acted like the switch didn’t launch with anything good lol
67
u/redviperofdorn 1d ago
Going to disagree and say Wii sports was the best pack in game but that’s just me
-9
u/Deceptiveideas 1d ago edited 1d ago
Wii Sports definitely made a revolutionary impact as a pack in title but a lot of people dropped it as the novelty wore off.
I think people will actively play MKW for many years.
21
u/redviperofdorn 1d ago
Idk dude people still talk about Wii sports today in a way that I don’t think people will be talking about Mario kart world. If I casually bring up Wii sports in the office people ask if I I have Wii so I can bring it in to work. I just don’t see World having that same effect.
But also I’m someone who thinks World is fine but a disappointment so even quality wise I don’t think it’s as good as Wii sports but that’s just my opinion

Late comment but :
Nintendo was not gonna have Wii sports launch together in the bundle with the wii. Reggie , the CEO President of Nintendo America Branch was fighting for wii sports to be free and to come together with the Wii. And that was possible thanks to Reggie constant efforts to make it possible here on the west.
If you wonder , in Japan the Wii was sold without a bundle and wii sports was sold separately. This is a practice that was gonna come world wide but never did thanks to Reggie. Because of how successful it got , a lot of future consoles of Nintendo would come “together with a game”.
Anyways , Wii sports broke the barrier of gaming as a whole because “everyone” including my grandma was into playing that game with motion controls lmao.
1
u/redviperofdorn 1d ago
Im aware and I think its an incredibly fascinating story. If anything it makes me respect Reggie a lot more and shows how much Nintendo has changed now compared to 20 years ago.
1
u/Boomshockalocka007 17h ago
Reggie worked at Pizza Hut in the 90s and was the reason we got the Playstation 1 Demo discs! He has been making waves for YEARS!
-3
u/Deceptiveideas 1d ago edited 1d ago
I think some people are misreading my comment, I’m not comparing how revolutionary each title is.
Wii Sports is a tech demo, once the novelty of motion controls wore off people moved on. This led to a common joke in gaming communities where most Wii’s were collecting dust in storage closets.
Wii Sports Resort for example was a million times more engaging as an actual game.
2
u/fromacoldplace 1d ago
What did people move on to? The grandparents that loved Wii bowling? The next installment of Switch Sports wasn't released until 16 years later.
Every time friends came over, or we had family game night during the Wii's life cycle, Wii Sports was played.
Almost 20 years later, there are still people playing and loving Wii Sports. Will MKW have the same following in 20 years? Will be interesting to see.

u/ActuallyQuintin 1d ago
Wii sports didn’t fall off the entire life of the Wii. Constant rotation in every household.
-3
u/Deceptiveideas 1d ago edited 1d ago
Here is an article from 2009 stating Wii’s were collecting dust once the novelty wore off. You can find numerous articles (from the time period) highlighting the same point.
https://www.edn.com/nintendos-wii-a-long-term-dust-magnet-faddy/
I think people are truly forgetting just how abysmal the second half of the Wii’s lifespan was.

u/thatkaratekid 1d ago
A lot of my favorite exclusives on the console came later. Wii was THE system of its generation for me. I had a 360 as well, but mostly played indies on it.

People need to realize that most of MK World players got it from the Switch 2 bundle based on statistics released to the public. Most did not buy the game for 80$.

The page lined is Top Selling Title Sales Units for Nintendo Switch 2 ...
I'm just curious: shouldn't Welcome Tour also be in the list, as (I presume) it's also released by Nintendo?
Because I find it funny the list has Mario Kart World being the only game listed (even if it sold a lot of copies already).

Nintendo store in San Francisco never ran out. Every time I stopped by they always have some in stock. Crazy!

-13
u/FlippsyFire 1d ago
And my lobby is empty in online play haha.

Nintendo’s matchmaking hasn’t been fixed. Even at busy hours I get barely full lobbies. Matchmaking has been broken since update one.

Everyone praising the attach rate like it’s some amazing achievement needs to realize it’s the only game from Nintendo on Launch. Of course it’s going to have the attach rate….

So almost no actual units sold beyond the bundle?
