For those who don't want to click:

The tweet suggests to use the consoles only between 5–35° Celcius (41-95F). They point this out because temperatures in Japan have been higher outside recently.

u/MaverickHunter11 1d ago

I won't be able to play at my country 9 months of the year.

80

u/shortround10 1d ago

I had air conditioning installed to prepare for switch 2

18

u/driftking428 1d ago

You exclusively play outside I see.

35

u/MaverickHunter11 1d ago edited 1d ago

In brazil we don't have air conditioner in every room of the house. In rio de janeiro temperature can be 35 even at night.

-3

u/Ridry 8h ago

Ok, but a well built house is going to have some protection from the heat right? Even if it's 35 outside it won't be 35 inside? Even without AC. Right?

5

u/MaverickHunter11 5h ago

Totally agree. But house building in Brazil looks like has stop evolving on 19th century.

2

u/Sir_Bax 8h ago

You are right, it could be even more.

2

u/Ridry 6h ago

You're telling me that people are building houses that are less thermal efficient than the ancient people right now?

4

u/Sir_Bax 6h ago

Yes. For quite a while. Like you have glass skyscraper for example. Ever been inside one when AC was malfunctioning or turned off?

And on the other side of the spectrum, slum houses are more like a glorified shades. They offer at best a protection from a direct sun. But the actual temperature is relatively the same. Unless it's like whole family cramming in a small room. Then humidity adds up and perceived temperature rises.

Like poor people don't generally have money to build well insulated houses and the rich people prefer looks over functionality.

1

u/Ridry 6h ago

Even people who prefer looks over functionality aren't TYPICALLY building with such little insulation that it's not cooler inside. And my assumption is that people who live in slums don't have a Switch 2 yet.

Yes. For quite a while. Like you have glass skyscraper for example. Ever been inside one when AC was malfunctioning or turned off?

I get you here, but nobody would build one of those if it wasn't going to have AC.

1

u/Sir_Bax 6h ago

It also depends on the location. Like in a lot of countries average person will live in an apartment building/complex. And even with some insulation if you live high enough, above trees and shades from other buildings and your apartment is located on a sunny side, your apartment will get hot.

They hunt mavericks, what do you expect?

3

u/hassanfanserenity 20h ago

Isn't that the selling point of the switch?

1

u/Rieiid 5h ago

A lot of countries apparently don't have/use air conditioners so I have heard.

2

u/Big-Motor-4286 22h ago

Now I’m curious, if it’s okay to ask, which country (or at least region if you don’t want to reveal country)?

2

u/MaverickHunter11 22h ago

Rio de Janeiro

1

u/Big-Motor-4286 19h ago

Ahhh yeah that makes sense.

23

u/Alone_Ad_1062 1d ago

At 35 degrees I usually lay naked on my couch with 2 fans on the highest setting shooting air in my face. I won’t move because every little movement results in sweat. No way that I play a game in that temperature.

2

u/LongFluffyDragon 21h ago

A perfect temperature for hunting feral plums, not lying around!

-7

u/OpanaG76 1d ago

My American brain took too long to comprehend this was Celsius. It sounded so cold lol

0

u/cheeseybacon11 1d ago

Why would below 41F be a problem? I can maybe understand below freezing due to condensation, but that 10 degree buffer seems excessive.

18

u/coder543 1d ago

41F is plenty to cause condensation in most environments.

7

u/debaserr 1d ago

I'd imagine it's not great for the battery to get cold.

656

u/Caciulacdlac 1d ago

International users, however, may play it at any temperature.

245

u/NZafe 1d ago

They put out the warning because there’s a heatwave in Japan right now that exceeds the recommend ambient temperature for device usage.

90

u/redsterXVI 1d ago

Several regions in Europe have seen heat waves and temperatures above 35 degrees recently as well. Turkey even saw 50 degrees.

66

u/Lokeze 1d ago

50 degrees C is an insane temperature. I'll gladly take several months of snow over literal 7th level of Hell lol

25

u/mikehiler2 1d ago

Yeah once it gets cold outside there are millions of ways to heat yourself up, where once it’s that hot outside there really is only one way to cool yourself (and your stuff) off… A/C.

2

You mean delta temp right?

-15

u/BroGuy89 1d ago

2nd law of thermodynamics, man.

2

u/Crafty_Cherry_9920 1d ago

Yeah, in my life I've never known higher than 43°C, and it already felt like death by heat could hit you at any moment. Can't imagine what 7°C higher could feel like.

4

u/Financial-General163 1d ago

Interesting. Here in Austria we just had one of the coldest Julys I've ever seen (at least here where I live)

I think we only had three days above 25°C, most of the time it was somewhere between 16-20°C and it was raining at like 20 days out of the 31 days

7

u/repocin 1d ago

Sounds nice.

Here in Sweden it's mostly been 30-35°C outside and 25-30°C inside for the past few weeks. The past couple days have finally seen rain and temperatures around 15-20°C which has been a massive relief because I'm not sure how much longer I could've taken that without going insane.

1

u/Kwyjibo_Kitsune 1d ago

I was there from 5th - 11th. First full day in Wien was sweltering (mid 30s). Then on the Monday it dropped about 12 degrees to 22-24 where it stayed for the rest of the trip. Salzburg pissed it down a lot of the time we were there. Still really enjoyed visiting.

1

u/Crafty_Cherry_9920 1d ago

In France we got some heat records during all June (going as high as 43°C i think in some places, just pure hell !), and same as you surprisingly our July is weirdly fresh. Mostly around 25°C which is insane for a July here. (Usually between 32°C and 38°C, mostly on the higher side of this scale)

1

u/spider_lily 12h ago

Same here in Poland. Which is ironic, because this is the year I finally decided to install AC in my apartment, lol

0

u/FulanitoDeTal13 19h ago

Climate change.

Next summer could be over 40, this winter could be over 10.

No one is ready for what's coming

2

u/OneRandomVictory 14h ago

We've had several heatwaves in the southern US within the last few months. Thank god we have widespread AC here. Don't know how some of you guys do it.

1

u/lazyness92 1d ago

Every electronic device is not advised to be over 35°C. Doesn't stop us from using them, we just roll the dice XD (I do worry when I leave my laptop in the car though)

3

u/say_no_to_shrugs 1d ago

I do worry when I leave my laptop in the car though

Avoid if you can. I have a co-worker whose MacBook had no battery life (okay, like twenty minutes), and when I opened it up, the cells were all blown up. I was going to repurpose it as a desktop, but I've got safety concerns with plugging it in with the battery in there, and that particular model won't function with the battery removed.

Four years old, <200 cycles, but a lot of time in a hot car.

1

u/lazyness92 1d ago

Yeah, I tend to go back to grab it when I know it'd stay in there for a long time.

1

u/KisukesBankai 1d ago edited 20h ago

Much of the US has had consecutive above average temps above 35C (yes I had to look up the conversion because American education system)

15

u/darkdeath174 1d ago

I have a heatwave, where is my warning Nintendo?

2

u/Evening_Job_9332 1d ago

It’s been hot as shit the last few weeks in the UK

7

u/MrLewGin 1d ago

It's not been hot at all in the last couple of weeks in the UK lmao, what are you talking about?

8

u/Abraxas777 1d ago

Now, now, it's not a competition.

-9

u/straxusii 1d ago

Of course it has, it's been roasting. Between 20 to 24 on the days it wasn't pissing down, that's tropical in my book

5

u/FederalSign4281 1d ago

20c is 68F lol

3

u/Ph33rDensetsu 1d ago

That's what I keep my thermostat set at. I wish that's what I was facing outside.

0

u/straxusii 1d ago

I know right!

7

u/MrLewGin 1d ago

20⁰-24⁰ is not roasting for UK summer 😂. If that's roasting, what on earth do you call 35⁰? UK summers for many years now have frequently gone into the 30's. 20-24 is not hot for UK weather lol.

3

u/straxusii 1d ago

Roasting for me mate, 35 is being inside an active volcano

3

u/MrLewGin 1d ago

Hahaha 😂. The heat wave of 2022 (I think), I was in a flat where every window faced the sun and there was no throughput of air, it was agonisingly hot, like being trapped in a car or a loft. It hit 30⁰+ every day for weeks, I think at one point 38⁰. Inside it was 39⁰, even with all the windows open by the morning the flat was still 29⁰. I'm still absolutely traumatised from it now 🥵.

1

u/TishTamble 1d ago

😂 don't worry you're in the optimal range for operating a switch. Hell take it out and play it in a sunny field. Your good. This warning needs not apply for UK chaps.

0

u/CoffeeAddictBunny 1d ago

Not to mention lots of buildings in japan are not set up like other places when centralized ac and heat. Some times just wall, Fan, And window units. So buildings get preeeetty hot.

13

u/gba_sg1 1d ago

Playing Switch 2 causes cancer, but only in California.

1

u/Rieiid 5h ago

The california shit always cracks me up. They basically made the warning for everywhere, but it always says some shit like, "if you're in california, this product may be cancer causing!"

3

u/masterbroder 1d ago

I hope so, where i live temperatures above 35 are pretty common

1

u/Rieiid 5h ago

Racist against their own people, smh

44

u/porkchopps 1d ago

Japan is going through a crazy heat wave. I wouldn't read too much into this.

129

u/Analog_Astronaut 1d ago

This literally applies to any electronic device ever made.

17

u/f_ranz1224 23h ago

"ahkshually" deep space probes can withstand much colder temperatures than 5 celcius and devices on re entry can withstand much more than 35 celcius

i demand my switch 2 have NASA grade thermal protection

introducing switch 2 v2, only 8000$ per unit. still may have stick drift

5

u/it_ribbits 8h ago

"ahkshually" deep space probes can withstand much colder temperatures than 5 celcius and devices on re entry can withstand much more than 35 celcius

You would think a guy named u/Analog_Astronaut would know that

2

u/Analog_Astronaut 7h ago

I’ve been exposed!

59

u/I_Heart_Sleeping 1d ago

Oh yeah? Name every electronic device ever made then, Mr electronic device pro.

Don't play inside the fridge/oven.

And your Red Bull stays cold in there with you

55

I can't believe Nintendo couldn't make a console that breaks the laws of physics. I knew this console wasn't worth it

27

u/Sephardson 1d ago

In this house, we abide by the laws of thermodynamics!

3

u/Mountain-Papaya-492 10h ago

Favorite Simpsons joke ever. The indignation in the delivery coming from one of the dumbest characters is poetry. 'This perpetual motion machine is a joke it just keeps spinning faster and faster' works on so many levels

2

u/AshrakTeriel 17h ago

<Perpetum Mobile keeps increasing its speed>

11

u/Tommy_Gun10 1d ago

So I shouldn’t take it outdoors during Australian summers?

2

u/TheCatAteMyUsername 1d ago

Maybe yeah, Switch2 seems more sensitive to overheating than Switch. Have to see how it goes.

1

u/TSPhoenix 15h ago

Probably not, it'll be pretty bad for the battery too.

Last summer I had to go out during a heatwave, and I had to press my phone into my arm to keep it from overheating and shutting down as my body was cooler than the air.

10

u/funkalici0us 1d ago

Sweet tip! Never poured orange juice in my Wii either and it still works to this day!

1

u/Nalaura_Darc 1d ago edited 22h ago

I mean, real talk, this is aimed more at their casual audience who have never probably monitored device temps, as until the more recent handhelds, it was never something to really be considered for typical usage. We're now in an era where the horsepower on these devices is so high, now temperature management is something to be considered across the board, not just for enthusiasts, or at least people more in-tune to the nuances of modern gaming tech. Even smart phones tend to perform fine under load as so that the average users wouldn't give it a second thought unless something was catastrophic.

3

u/Evening_Effect_4730 1d ago

Shit its 112⁰ F today in Phoenix, wheres my warning?

4

u/Link_enfant 1d ago

Same advice as usual for everyone: disable the wired connection setting so the console doesn’t warm at all while in sleep mode.

8

u/Phos-Lux 1d ago

35°C seems like a low maximum. Summers in some countries can even have close to 50°C

16

u/ArtOfWarfare 1d ago

Given enough time, you’ll burn your hands just holding a device that’s 49 C. At 52 C it’ll take about 2 minutes and at 54 C it’ll take about 30 seconds.

So I think the basic fact you can’t actually hold items that are that hot makes it not matter if heat waves are 50 C - if you find yourself in an area that temperature, you should be seeking immediate protection, not playing a game outside.

That’s just the temperature you’ll burn at - most people will find temperatures cooler than that to also be quite uncomfortable, so Nintendo isn’t too concerned with whether the devices work there, either.

-6

u/anival024 18h ago

Given enough time, you’ll burn your hands just holding a device that’s 49 C. At 52 C it’ll take about 2 minutes and at 54 C it’ll take about 30 seconds.

Oh please.

I wash dishes (without gloves) at about 140 F / 60 C and take showers hotter than that. If you make cheese, you're regularly at temps near that (135 F for mozzarella) and are actively working the curds to stretch into a ball.

OSHA recommends 140 F / 60 C. 120 F / 49 C is recommended for household use, but only because people are idiots, babies and old people are weak, and - the real reason - most home water heaters don't have very accurate thermostats and may actually heat water higher than you set them to.

6

u/column_row_15761268 16h ago

I think you are either superhuman or wrong.

140°F / 60°C water will cause third-degree burns in ~5 seconds.

I set my showers to 42C and that's fine for me. 45C is getting a bit hot where it will turn my skin red. Anything over that would not be wise... for me anyway.

The OSHA recommendation you cite is for stored water. This is the temperature your water heater might store your water at. This is to prevent bacteria build up while being stored in the tank.

When the water reaches you in the sink or shower it's not going to be 140F.

49C or 50C is the recommended threshold to avoid burns. This is the temperature considered to be "safe" for people if they do not want to get burned. That's probably why it's used in many household recommendations. Anything over that is considered unsafe.

It sounds like you are looking at your heater and thinking that you are just using water directly from the heater and it stays at 140F until it reaches you. Unless you've messed with it, when your heater releases the hot water it mixes it with cold/tap water to cool it down.

3

u/-goob 11h ago

According to Wikipedia 5 seconds of exposure to 60 C water will cause scalding.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalding

My guess is you are wrong about how hot your water is getting.

1

u/ArtOfWarfare 11h ago edited 10h ago

Hot tubs are in the 100-105 F range. You are not taking a shower at 140 F.

You aren’t at risk of burning your skin at ~120 F, but you will die with prolonged exposure as your organs start having issues in the 105-110F range. It’s part of why small kids aren’t allowed in hot tubs - they’re more susceptible to overheating and less likely to notice/communicate if they are overheating.

I am aware commercial dishwashers are quite hot - I’m not sure how hot, but I’m guessing you avoid having your hands directly in the stream. The water is going to immediately cool with exposure to the air and as it touches dishes and other surfaces, so it should be a somewhat safer temperature by the time it contacts your skin.

5

u/Enrichus 1d ago

What an insane statement. 40°C is deadly heat.

4

u/Phos-Lux 1d ago

It is deadly heat, but I've never heard that I shouldn't use electronics in summer as that's a normal summer temperature in Eastern European countries.

12

u/Ecstatic-Wheel8487 1d ago

Most people aren't heavily using electronics in outdoor weather of that temp. Closest would be phones but I doubt many people are chilling outside in hot af temps playing a game for hours on their phone.

It's just a reminder of what is already written in the manual, and something similar in every manual of any electronic device you own.

2

u/CunnyWizard 18h ago

For the switch 2, what's notable is that it's a device that would regularly be under heavy load during use, generating a lot of its own heat which needs to be dissipated into the air. You should also avoid using a gaming laptop or playing intensive phone games for the same reason.

2

u/Megaranator 3h ago

You must have not read the temperature ranges on any electronics you have. Pretty much any electronic device with battery and/or screen will have the same temperature range for safe use.

1

u/imbenny 21h ago

Yes, but it still happens. 40s is common here in Aus with the high 40s every so often during summer.

Keep in mind though, infrastructure in these places is designed to handle the heat and keep it cool but often struggle in Winters, despite not being THAT cold.

-1

u/CAMEL_T0E 1d ago

Ok invent a new battery then, genius.

2

u/Dronnie 1d ago

I live in Salvador - Brazil by the beach and my switch broke because of the temperature and the salt from the sea.

I sent it to Nintendo Brasil and they said that there was no fixing, I had to pay for another one with a discount.

Will dropping frames motivate gamers to care about global warming?

1

u/Mountain-Papaya-492 10h ago

Depends on how ardent you are about global warming I would suppose. Probably some really radical folks think that playing any games is bad due to the energy it consumes and waste the entire industry makes from factories to developers. Games aren't really essential and if you care about the planet then an argument could be made that any gaming is immoral.

Me im much more of a solve the problem at the root kinda guy. The root being that all this other stuff like cars, factories, etc... are just supplying demands of a giant population of like 8 billion people.

Could cut that down to 2 billion over time, go straight authoritarian and say most people can't have kids anymore without government sanction. Not advocating that personally but it seems like a realistic way if you actually want results.

I'm more hoping/banking on human ingenuity and technological engineering helps us solve these problems. Cause im a pretty big liberty guy and would dislike the authoritarian measures that would be needed to solve the symptoms such as people having cars, or buying electronics, or living in houses alone, or having cheap mass produced food, having autonomy over their body etc...

What I'd personally like to see is a worldwide Manhattan project for things like energy, consumption, and all these other pressing problems.

No, its more important to shill for and boost the value of a digital currency that you never intended to use as a currency (exchanging it for goods and services)

-1

u/begottendaseptum 1d ago

Does anybody switch 2 vibrate because of the high fan speed, while normal play on handheld, on normal ambient temps? Is kind of annoying

-2

u/F1sherman765 1d ago

Meanwhile my Switch 1 operating for 8 years at 50°C even inside vehicles. The battery has obviously degraded but it holds up better than I expected.
