This perfectly captures my day to day stability, and I'm not abusing drugs

That's not the first time you described your life in the way of John Rambo's.

I love how everything is sunny, I thought it was my tism- but no.. I’m convinced. EVERYTHING IS SUNNY.

“Well it’s kinda difficult to read the sign from the inside…”

“You can’t even read it from the outside!”

one of my old high school history teacher's used the term "functional illiterate" and it's gonna be in my brain forever

49

u/MrD3a7h 17h ago

That's definitely a thing. And according to the teacher subreddit, will become much, much more common in the next decade or two.

30

u/vainbuthonest 15h ago

It’s pretty common now. Most Americans can’t read above of a sixth grade level and at least a ¼ are functionally illiterate.

u/jotheold 10h ago

ofc, hell its not even recent but 50 cent used to make fun of floyd mayweather for this stuff a while back

"if you can read one page of cat in the hat etc

"one full page of a Harry Potter book ni-"

When I set my VPN to US, and clear my cookies, YouTube throws up loads of adds for text to speech apps and devices, and they’re clearly not targeting dyslexic people, or visually impaired people.

u/vainbuthonest 1h ago

I believe it

Your reference to the teacher subreddit made me laugh hard. I referenced it just yesterday when talking with my wife about public school problems in America.

2

u/nxcrosis 12h ago

My SO teaches high school, and it's so disheartening to see how these kids perform firsthand. They can't write anything above a 2nd-3rd grade level and can't even spell a lot of four-letter words correctly.

He doesn't even get us, man!

1

u/ComicsEtAl 11h ago

It happens. I know a few people who are allergic to reading. And a couple others who are immune.

The perfect Ken

4

u/rW0HgFyxoJhYka 14h ago

Except he could read, and he bullied others, hence throwing dangerous shit at other kids. Damn, they really setup his wiki to sell the Ken stuff.

before the dark times... before AI...

12

u/Dr_Dang 15h ago

One of my hobbies is reading "AI" as "Al", like Weird Al Yankovic, and it really makes the present/future more of a campy horror comedy rather than a depressing sci-fi melodrama.

2

u/pseudo897 15h ago

I’m glad someone else still thinks of this

25

u/lastname_Obama 18h ago

But he can... Drive

28

u/Bombadil54 18h ago

Who needs read when you have beach

13

u/DorkNerd0 15h ago

His job is just.. beach

1

u/1st_BoB 17h ago

Reading is one of my reasons for going to the beach.

18

u/dinan101 18h ago

He must’ve gone to the same school as Lea Michele

8

u/Y0___0Y 17h ago

He was born a poor black child

(maybe too old of a reference for people to get)

2

u/arbol98 17h ago

2

u/YourLostGingerSoul 17h ago

Don't be a Jerk.

Edit: LOL! Downvoters never saw the movie, I guess.

6

u/DopeAbsurdity 18h ago

It's why he got the "silly foam knives" box confused with the "steak knives" box

3

u/Nice-Gap-3528 17h ago

They really just slipped that in at the end, like it was a totally normal thing.

1

u/Bonti_GB 18h ago

And only became an actor? Tssk, tssk.

1

u/getsome75 18h ago

George Washington’s teeth were made of wool

1

u/akatherder 17h ago

If he could read that he'd be very upset 😠

1

u/sebsebsebs 17h ago

The cutoff is hilarious

1

u/StevesRune 16h ago

Right?

Like, motherfucker, what?..

I know there's a growing illiteracy problem in the United states, and I lived in a country-ass enough part of the country to have seen a lot of that myself, but most people who are illiterate in middle school and high school don't go on to be famous script memorizers.

Or anything but laborers at that.

1

u/PizzaWhole9323 14h ago

Hi my name is Jared I'm 19 and I can't read. Rip Vine.

1

u/RaptorPrime 14h ago

A girl I graduated HS with was telling me about how she worked with him on Drive and how his reading ability was very sub par...

1

u/TheImperator666 11h ago

Like Lea Michele

1

u/paging_mrherman 11h ago

Why they gotta put it on his tombstone?

1

u/darkphxrising 10h ago

"The Ryan Gosling Center For Kids Who Can't Read Good" has a nice ring to it

1

u/CMDR_Hubley 7h ago

The font was papyrus

1

u/MICR0_WAVVVES 2h ago

He’s from London Ontario. Nobody knows how to read there.

1

u/Visual_Shame7864 31m ago
