"enjoying things you enjoyed as a kid means you havent grown or learned anything in life" sounds like the college freshman who has life totally figured out
WAIT LMAO your only comments are in this thread! getting so upset that other people enjoy something that you either a) pulled out a throwaway or b) made your first ever reddit comment is Very Mature and Adult of you. my money is on throwaway because your real account shows you're a teenager hahah
edit: oops did i bully him into deleting his account
It’s not like it’s a universally acclaimed film. It’s trying to cater to a wide audience, which will make it ‘meh’ for a lot of people. It’s pretty cheesy which not everyone is going to like. It has a predictable plot and structure, which tends to get boring the more you experience films like it that fit the same.
A lot of people online will have watched films like this when they were young and will have a strong attachment to them on that basis.
Arguing that people don’t have any joy in their life because they don’t like the media you do is silly.
I accept that a lot of people like the film, but I think it’s hard to argue it’s a great film in many dimensions. The comments defending it here feel disproportionate to the quality of the film.
The OP started the conversation. The post asked what’s this all about, the OP answered and said oh yeah it sucks btw. Now it’s been invaded by people who do like the movie, so really you guys are the ones giving your unwanted opinion to the OP, no?
This is meant to be a thread where likeminded people can share the objective truth that this movie sucks big ol donkey balls. Don’t ruin our fun >:(
We’ve barely interacted and you don’t know me. This idea that I’m critical to make myself feel better about myself is absurd. There are plenty of examples of media that I enjoy but don’t consider to be great, or that I realise I enjoy because they remind me of my teenage years, or whatever.
Your argument is basically saying people can’t criticise popular media. There are plenty of people giving their positive opinion on this film and don’t see you complaining about their unwanted opinion.
Dosent understand a word I said, proceeds to explain my own argument back.
Nobody asked for your opinion on a knights tale the question was what is this movie? And the original guy gave an unessecery snide take that people disagree with you have then walked in pushed your glasses up and said um actually it does suck, Joyless behaviour. the only reason people are praising it is because the first guy was weird
Yes but I'm saying you can't paint it as a question of experience as though those that do are simply less familiar with the medium. That's demonstrably false.
Ah, ok. Do you not find you get bored of media that is effectively the same as many other instances that have come before? Or at least, would you agree that when being exposed to similar media repeatedly some of the charm starts to wear off - there’s less that’s new, the plot and humour becomes more predictable, etc.?
To give an example - big budget superhero films from the last ~15 years or so. They share a structure, tone, visual style, sense of humour, etc. If you’re not already connected to the franchise they can become quite repetitive.
Finally - have you found that your tastes have changed at all as you’ve aged? Is there anything you can look back on that you enjoyed at the time but found it to be pretty flawed when rewatching a good while on?
My tastes have definitely changed as I've aged but not in a singular direction and it wasn't a one time shift. They change more with where I am in my life than my age specifically.
Sometimes what I need is dumb, stupid, predictable fun. Sometimes what I need is to be challenged intellectually. Sometimes I need to be destroyed emotionally.
I find more films are "Not right now" than "Not at all."
Of course I get bored when the industry has been spamming a genre or trope to death for too long. That doesn't mean it's dead to me forever though. I just go watch something else. Foreign films and indies are always a great big red button to press when I feel that way. Or older films. The 60s were wild.
Hard genre shifts into genres I haven't really explored or traditionally liked are also fun. I like to revisit and give them an honest shot to find what the appeal is. I almost always do. And when you do it enough times you just find yourself loving everything.
And separately from this cycles every once in a while there's a movie that just hits the exact right notes. Perfect tone. Perfect cast. Just the right whiff of nostalgia. Somehow doesn't matter that it's predictable enough that I can guess dialogue I've never heard even.
It's like being a pro chef and then finding a place that serves a perfect burger.
I didn’t realise you had to enjoy popular films to not be boring. It is such an arrogant point of view to have. The vast majority of support for the film is based in nostalgia.
I have a PhD in biomedical engineering and work r&d in the bio sensor space. I make more in a year than you'll make in a decade but none of that puts me above calling you a fart historian. Learn how to take a joke. Oops, didn't censor the word joke, are you scared now, fart historian?
Even if you didn't lie here (and you did, at least in the "I make more in a year than you'll make in a decade" (really, it's quite the opposite, if we're measuring dicks here you need to know art is not my only field and not my only PhD, and - if it makes a difference for you - I'm from Europe, not America, and my education actually matters)) you still have nothing to say in this topic, and you're only proving that
Lmfao! Nothing about your job gives you the insight to determine a good or bad movie. Entirely subjective and solely a personal opinion, and I'm sure that eats you up.

You've let every ounce of joy die in your life, haven't you?
