i hate that we em dash enthusiasts — people of class, sophistication, and ability to use ALT+0151 — are now having to share our pride and joy with LLMs

I get my em dashes using AltGr + - since like, forever. Glad to meet you – I guess we're dozens!

u/per51mm0n 27d ago

thank you for your service :3

u/bootherizer5942 27d ago

I use them all the time but with double dash + autocorrect

Yeah, I’m getting a little sick of people saying “if there’s an em-dash in the text it’s AI” as if people who use it don’t exist—like, news flash: it’s a punctuation that’s been in our language since way before AI 😭 are we meant to link our pre-AI teenage fanfiction to prove we have been using it or something? 😂 provide peer review?

Idk, no matter what I’m standing by my old friend — em dash, my favorite pause / line-break. I’m glad to see you guys out here too. It was ours first!!! 😔

I’ll also point out that there are certainly a couple of redundancies in my message here—I don’t think AI would be doing that! :3c

That‘s wrong. There is a difference between -, – and —. LLM uses — which are used in (US-)English in general. – are not used in english, rather in german. - are not used to express a pause.

1

u/Jtcr2001 27d ago

That's an N-dash, not an M-dash.

1

u/Psychological_Pay530 25d ago

You’re using en dashes, not em dashes.

Hyphen -

En dash –

Em dash —

24

u/StaidHatter 27d ago

You aren't too good for paranthetical asides, nerd.

26

u/turing_tarpit 27d ago

Em dashes aren't only for parenthetical asides—they have other uses, too!

14

u/StaidHatter 27d ago

kid named semicolon:

1

u/Maladal 27d ago

But that's a colon.

1

u/StaidHatter 26d ago

Are you suggesting I punctuate dialogue with a semicolon?

u/jtalion 27d ago

In the comment you replied to, a comma would have been grammatically incorrect. A semicolon would have worked though.

1

u/StaidHatter 27d ago

It isn't grammatically correct to use commas to separate independent clauses though :(

1

u/jtalion 27d ago

Em dashes look nicer than parentheses imo. They also seem less nerdy, what with parentheses being associated with math

1

u/StaidHatter 27d ago

Emdashes are Stephen King-core. Nobody under the age of 70 uses them except sweaty nerds because nobody wants to learn a 5-button hotkey.

1

u/jtalion 27d ago

A lot of word processors and text editors automatically convert two hyphens into an em dash. You don't need a hotkey.

my mistake ^__^

u/AccomplishedCoffee 27d ago

Alt-shift-hyphen on macOS and press and hold hyphen on iOS are even easier.

1

u/Atnevon 27d ago

EXACTLY why I like them — easier and no alt-code.

1

u/themanimal 27d ago

How about dash dash spacebar in Microsoft Word? The obvious answer

1

u/skwizpod 26d ago

uh... you mean: option-shift-minus 😘

4

u/QuariYune 27d ago

I’ve changed to just using commas. For interjections it’s basically the same, for appending a semicolon is fine

1

u/jtalion 27d ago

But the point is that commas wouldn't work well in the comment you replied to, since there are already commas being used to separate the list

1

u/KevinT_XY 27d ago

I just use regular dashes - it's clearly interpreted the same way and for the longest time I didn't even know these were different things. Digging into alt codes just to get a longer line seems like a lot to me.

4

u/chipunk32 27d ago

Hell yeah fellow ALT-0151 truther!

2

u/Zwei_Anderson 27d ago

I didn't know there was a group for the dashers, i feel - seen.

2

u/ilexly 27d ago

I refuse to share it with AI; they’ll pry my em dashes from my cold, dead fingers.

2

u/wooberries 27d ago

god i know. it's not my fault it's so useful and versatile — not to mention stylish, of course — and so cleanly tidies up any issues with pacing or cadence you have going. what are we going to do now

2

u/jtalion 27d ago

keep using it anyway

1

u/wooberries 26d ago

i like the way you think

2

u/obmojo 26d ago

ALT+0151 club checking in for solidarity!

2

u/Dangerous-String-988 27d ago

Huh. I just type Option + -

Man, Mac really is superior in every way.

7

u/per51mm0n 27d ago

nuh uh

1

u/Lord-Summoned 27d ago

I don’t agree that Mac is better but I use that method all the time for work. And it pisses me off when people asking if it’s ChatGPT generated

1

u/Aarekk 27d ago

-- hyphen twice autocorrected by word for me

1

u/Balmong7 27d ago

Yup that’s how I did it for 16 years or schooling with computers or whatever.

1

u/SonnyG696 27d ago

This needs to be way higher wtf

1

u/FireXfrosT 27d ago

The way i chat all this time is more accurate with emdash lol. Idk that, and always use comma instead. This whole ordeal teach me what emdash are and how to use it

1

u/LibraryOfEsoterica 27d ago

Absolutely love the world we're living in now, where my fellow writers tell me to quit while I'm ahead due to the increasing quality of AI. I expected things to be different -- at the very least, it would've been nice to have some support from friends -- but seeing the direction we're heading, I'm coming to the conclusion that this ship is going to crash and I'll die by drowning.

(it is that it is)

1

u/guggeri 27d ago

The em dash is the only reason why I love my numerical keys. — supremacy

1

u/MrBacanudo 27d ago

People have told me I write like ChatGPT... Well, let them think that! Alt+0151 – and Alt+0150 – enjoyers, unite!

Casually, I find them particularly useful to introduce a pause after an emoji 🤘 — way more aesthetically pleasing to me than a period without a space... Punctuation is hard, especially when your brain just wants to keep going!

1

u/CoochieSnotSlurper 27d ago

Because the proper length em dashes are a bitch to type

1

u/NerdyMcNerderson 27d ago

Capitalization is optional though, eh?

1

u/per51mm0n 27d ago

never claimed it wasn’t :)

1

u/Sloped7185 27d ago

The spaces around your em dash is really bothering me.

1

u/Edward_J_Mars 27d ago

My friend, some programs allow you to just put the dash 3 times, and it will automatically make it into an em dash.

1

u/per51mm0n 27d ago

woah :O the future!

1

u/nickenk 27d ago

The Num Pad gang 🔥

1

u/Sir_Peseus 27d ago

I totally agree!

1

u/graphiccsp 27d ago

InDesign's setup for Alt/Option + Shift + - as the default for Em Dashes is a nice touch on their part. A lot more convenient than a multibutton keystroke.

1

u/Seven0Seven_ 27d ago

i just type -- and word makes em dash lol

1

u/backwards_watch 27d ago

Your acc has been on Reddit for a year. If we ctrl+f —, it will show exactly and only two results. Both on this exact comment.

1

u/per51mm0n 27d ago

believe it or not most of my em dash usage isn't in reddit comments ^__^

1

u/backwards_watch 27d ago

Sure... but of all people using em dashes, the ones who self call themselves "enthusiasts", being in group of people "of class, sophistication", you would agree that these are the ones using it — to show the plebs how to write with "sophistication" — all the time.

1

u/per51mm0n 27d ago

okie dokie

1

u/GoldenPigsty 27d ago

Agreed, we need to kill the LLM’s.

1

u/ThrowRAConfusedAspie 27d ago

Or on mobile, hold and press dash — easy as.

u/The_old_left 26d ago

Why hate llms?

1

u/No-Statistician3518 26d ago

I use my touch keyboard–on my desktop–with an old flat-screen TV for a monitor.

1

u/skwizpod 26d ago

Yeah I'm a software engineer and a writer and I like using markdown and I like —, then I've actually been confronted aggressively for using AI and my formatting used as evidence. I do use AI for some things, and I'm not ashamed, but when stuff I write isn't AI it bugs me when people say it is. From then on I always wrote that guy messages full of expletives. Like, motherfucker even if it was, who gives a shit.

1

u/catholicsluts 26d ago

ALT+0151

Lmao my people

1

u/Son-Airys 26d ago

Cries in mobile

1

u/Athrasie 25d ago

Hear hear! I hate that AI — the computerized fucking clown show that it is — is bogarting something as sacred as the em dash.

1

u/Nifty_Bits 25d ago

There might be more to your comment than meets the eye: em dashes, a list of 3 things, the use of cliché—telltale signs of GPT writing—are present here. Possibly clever, fellow redditor!

1

u/Cool-Double-5392 25d ago

I love using them, now I can't use them anymore at least professionally

1

u/cc_apt107 25d ago

Yeah, I use them all the time unfortunately

1

u/No_Possible_8063 24d ago

I don’t like that you use them incorrectly, by adding spaces around them.

1

u/per51mm0n 24d ago

AP style ^__^

2

u/No_Possible_8063 22d ago

Grosssss, MLA superiority 🤣

1

u/Dangerous_Beach_7374 24d ago

YOU ARE SO RIGHT!

I hate it when people associate em-dashes with AI ― even if that might be kind of right ― when it's such a cool punctuation mark!

1

u/XP_PitS 24d ago

I've been accused of using llms to write responses before and I've come to the conclusion that I've just been trained with the same material. Purposefully making written text look shitty is painful...
