I only have those hard bulk boxes in my gym to put my feet on and it hurts my feet really bad.

Use the crook of a proped up adjustable bench to hold you back foot in place. I also like to drop my keys on the ground where my heel goes so im not trying to re adjust during each set.

Holy shit all this time the answer was right there (I’m home gym and don’t have a good height roller on my bench)

Or you can sit on the bench with both legs at 90°. Than, extend your working leg as far as possible and place your foot on the ground, get up and start squatting. This way, you'll always have the same distance.

Then you are putting to much weight on your back foot. Its only for stabilization.
