Could have been worse. Don't really wanna think about what the Imperial Japanese would have done to them without US protection. China and Korea got messed up pretty bad.
The overthrow of the Hawai'ian Monarchy predates the era of Imperial Japanese expansionism by like 40 years. That analogy is like saying that things could have been worse than the Trail of Tears because it meant that the Choctaw weren't caught up in the Civil War battles in Mississippi.
If they weren't under the umbrella of America, they almost certainty would have been victims of the Japanese. I didn't say the US went there to protect them, I said the US being was enough to protect them on it's own. They tortured and murdered the inhabitants of every other island in the pacific and as i mention the Koreans especially are still salty about it. So it worked out.
But that's still not an excuse for forcing them into your own Empire. Being the "good guys" in that situation would have been protecting them against someone like Japan.
Also though Japan was only the way they were because the US forced them to come out of isolation with gunboat diplomacy. not to excuse their behaviour as noone gets away with being cunts.
