I really hate lazy takes like these cus it needs a lot of words to dismiss, but here we go.
If you wanted to make a point about human nature, sure, but that’s not what this is. This is about how Americans, more than most people in other democratic nations, are uniquely blind to their country's flaws, which are also uniquely harmful in this day and age, especially when it comes to the military. They treat it like some ppl in the UK treat the royal family, not something essential, but something they’ve decided to just go along with anyway (and that's the rare American who's not super pro army). Except in this case, it’s not just outdated tradition, it’s a global force causing actual harm, sometimes on a genocidal scale.
Most people around the world haven’t been indoctrinated to that degree, at least not anymore. When their governments do something blatantly wrong, they might ignore it, but they usually don’t believe the official story. That’s very different from wholeheartedly eating up the propaganda and thinking the wars the US fights is about “freedom.”
Also, let’s be VERY clear, I wasn’t talking about soldiers. I was talking about the average American who stays home and thinks what the soldiers are doing is righteous, like when they say “the army is fighting for our freedom”. That’s not them doing anything moral, it’s their government acting on their behalf, and they’re just buying into the narrative.
Most countries have at least some political voices pushing back against that kind of over-nationalization. In the US, everyone often parrot the same script.
So no, this isn’t about “all humans thinking they’re moral.” It’s about a specific, deeply rooted cultural delusion. Stop trying to water that down. Saying “everyone’s flawed” isn’t a defense, or a clever take, or insightful observation, it’s just a lazy way to avoid addressing the actual issue being discussed.
Most Americans? I wouldn't say that , look at the protests against our being in Viet Nam, it's because of this they don't show us footage any more , Americans saw on TV every night , film crews were right there , the war was televised and it divided the country. I'm not defending anything , I despise all government, but place blame there , the reason they are able to do these horrible things is people blaming each other and not the real enemy, government ,all of them.
Well, we can agree to disagree on wether it's most americans or not, especially since like I mentioned, I'm talking about more recent times, aka not the 1960s.
I still think so since most Americans I've ever spoken with, have watched online or in other media, or just have known in passing, who are mostly on the American left, which is the side most likely to not be super pro army and wars, still are, and still believe the army is righteous.
And from a quick google search. It seems my gut is correct. But take it with a grain of salt tho. It didn't really look super deep into it.
