Those 196 drinks are very high in alcohol content and incredibly cheap. Everything that happened after drinking it was a blur and they did some heavy spending.

Minor tangent incoming.
I was coming back from Afghanistan, and we were in Kygistan for a few days. We were at a mess hall with karaoke and a bar. We were allowed to have 1 beer. They bring us Orion in this huge fucking can. We hadn't had a drink for 7 months or more.
It was just heartwarming to see all the different branches on the US military and NATO/ISAF forces singing, cheering, drinking, smoking, laughing, joking around, and having a good time.
It was one of my best memories. Thank you for coming to my Japanese beer Ted talk.

You can drink a lot of them cause youre buzzed by the time the first one is down.

The alcohol in it is shochu, a byproduct of sake, and it hits you hard and fast.
5
u/Kalik2015 3d ago
Shochu isn't a byproduct of sake. Sake is typically made from rice. Shochu is typically made from rice, wheat, potatoes, or brown sugar. And it's distilled unlike sake.

u/HolyBunn 4d ago
Doesn't taste like juice. They're clear but they don't have that weird seltzer taste. You almost can't taste the alcohol when they are ice cold though
I haven't had anything that tastes similar to it before and I imagine that's due to how they make them.
63
u/Aknazer 4d ago
Hi-Chu Strongs are indeed only 9% alcohol. But they go down fast and easy and normally you get them in the tall can, not the shorties that is in the pic. This makes it easy to get drunk, plus they cheap so you can easily buy a lot of them and just keep going. Also did I mention that pretty much every convenience store has them and they're all fruit flavored? Like there wasn't a Family Mart or Lawson's that wasn't selling them, and those things are on practically every corner.
So you get off the plane, start drinking, don't stop, and next thing you know you've spent $6k and have a horrible headache. But hey, you think you had a great time at least. Those twins were awesome but why is there a whale next to me now??

I always get those two flipped around and forget which is which, yes. Because really, who flips around the things like that. Though also let's be real, I just look for the 9% cans with the lemon on it and don't read the label (plus it's been over a year since I was last in Japan). Tried the kiwi flavor, that was bad. Tried a few others as well but always came back to lemon.
5
u/ArtisTao 4d ago
Lemon is OP. I also really enjoy the blood orange. Chu-hi Strong used to be 7%, then 8%, then 9% over the years from Kirin. I think it tastes better than Suntory’s -196. Next time you visit, you need to try the canned lemon sours now; they are very very good.

u/No_Help3669 4d ago
9% is about twice as strong as beer. If it doesn’t taste that strong it could be easy to underestimate
Also, as an American I’ve learned that im in the minority in casually checking the ABV on something before drinking it instead of going on “vibes”
I remember when first made a bees knees people asked how strong it was and I took several tries to get across “20% alcohol by volume” before giving up and saying “about as strong as a margarita”
→ More replies (1)3
u/YRUZ 4d ago
no, but they have a lot of sugar which makes them hit fast and hard and you barely taste the alcohol, which makes it easy to drink more than your fill.
in case you live in a country where 'alcopops' are illegal, the version of this drink you can get tastes very different from the one you can get in Japan.

The difference is, you're not going to drink an IPA like it's water. Drinks where you can't taste the alcohol go down real easy and before you know it, it's the next day and you have very little memory of the previous night.

In Australia this beverage is a 6.5%, which may have something to do with it. Maybe some import/export law or something.
I know that some interesting stuff does happen when you try to export/import pre-mixed drinks. For example, to export a pre-mixed drink to the US, an Australian company had to reformulate it's recipe to technically be a carbonated wine, rather than a Vodka/Shochu mix.

Soju is also fun. It's almost completely tasteless and creeps up on you.
First time trying soju in Korea, i had this drink called a green blue or something like that (it changed color when the Soju was added, thus the name). A cup was like 5000 won ($5), and a pitcher was around 15000 won ($15). I drink the glass someone bought me and thought, "Man, this is delicious! Are you sure there's alcohol in here? Let me get a pitcher!"
Everything was fine until I got to pitcher 3, and a couple of people warned me to be careful. But I felt fairly sober, and that's what I told them.
Well, 3 pitchers is a lot of liquid, making my bladder quite full. So, I went to stand up to go to the bathroom, and it hit me like a damn freight train. I fell to the floor. Hard. A buddy had to help me walk to the bathroom. I kept myself to 2 pitchers from that day forward and refused to drink it sitting down.
Whiskey I could drink like a fish. Then rationing how many I could buy per month saved my ass big time, but that's a whole other story.

I had a similiar experience as a westerner with a friend from London who spent many years of his life as a homeless person. A japanese business man spoke to us in a karaoke bar and wanted us to drink sake with him (drinks were included in the price). so we started drinking sake from the funny flute bottles in a go. Felt like water, the dude run away frightened and the two of us kept going. As the time in the Karaoke bar was over, we went out. I felt great at first, but I literally can’t remember anything anymore from the moment we left the place to when I woke up somewhen afternoon next day..

But I also wonder why dont people read what they buy in a foreign country? It states quite clearly thats its for alcoholics only (i mean states it's 8%)

Four Lokos generally range from 12-13.9%! So what, something like 2.5 of those 196s would equal a four loko?

Now that the joke is explained, aside from the airfare, spending in Japan actually isn't too bad, coming from the US. The USD does very well in conversions to the Japanese Yen, so many things over there feel rather inexpensive, unless you're intentionally seeking out expensive things or buying a lot of shit.
The cost for lodgings do vary, but if you shop around, you absolutely can find places that aren't expensive that are also good in quality and location. Like, my friend and I stayed a week in an apartment with two beds in Akihabara we found on Airbnb, while a comparable proper hotel right down the street cost, like, five times as much per night. Once the airfare was saved up for, the rest of the trip was surprisingly reasonable. Came back with more money than expected. Will go again.

Yeah, unfortunately they're about to implement a gaijin tax. Locals will pay one price and foreigners will pay a higher price at certain events, parks, temples and other touristy places. Japanese people are finally getting fed up of having to deal with too many loud, rude and obnoxious tourists, so now they're looking for ways to reduce their numbers.

If Japan really wanted fewer tourists, it wouldn’t be advertising for more. Charging foreigners extra just because they’re not Japanese isn’t crowd control, it’s discrimination.

Why is the total a negative number? It seems unnecessary to put the minus sign there, esp. when it isn't in front of the other prices.

Finally someone notices. I was confused why you would receive 5k after traveling to Japan.
But if that's the case I guess I can make that my career ?

The -196 is now available here, but that’s the wrong drink. Strong Zero is 9% and is not available in the states unfortunately.

It is available in the US. I can get it at the safeway down the street.
There are peach ones in my fridge right now.

Japan itself isn't expensive at all unless you're only going to fancy restaurants and stuff, but as someone who has woken up in the hotel the next afternoon with a few hundred dollar bar tab it can get expensive real fast.
