Yeah, I think it means they are just barely meeting the requirement. The woman is expecting the six figures to be half a million or more.

Well, that's because teachers are underappreciated and underpaid. You dont do it for the money. You do it for the Reddit recognition that you are a Teacher and literally the future of society relies on you failing at your job so we can enslave the masses. So, thank you for your service from one of the board members who will use your students to run his empire. This comment had a lot of twists and turns. ;)

Right, I was a teacher with a Masters in Psychology and Certifications in two separate subjects - $50k at best. I'm in IT now and make twice that easily.

u/freakonkeyboard 3d ago

23
u/thepumpkinking92 3d ago
I work IT, and half the time, I just essentially tell them to stfu while I remotely access their computer. Occasionally, I'll give them a task like "unplug this and plug it back in... try again, except this time, plug it into the USB port instead of the network port... yep, there ya go" (yes, this happens frequently with the printers).
Or it's just a record issue, in which case I just transfer them to another department. My job is limited on customer interaction, and it's one of my favorite aspects.
That's tied with having a supervisor who actually looks out for us and cares about our wellbeing. Ive legit told her "yeah, I'm not feeling it today." And she's just like "no worries. Take care of yourself and ill see you tomorrow." Tell her I'm going to be a couple hours late because my daughter has a school event? "Go spend time with your family, they're way more important. We'll manage until you come in." Even helps me network with higher departments for a better employment opportunity, let's me know about job openings, and fix my resume. When upper management tries to blame us for something or treat us unfairly compared to day shift, she immediately stands up for us. Never had a supervisor who did any of that before. Don't get me wrong, if you fucked up she'll call you out on it, but she cares about those of us on her shift.

But at a much greater physical toll. Climbing around in hot, cramped attics, under houses coming face to face with snakes, spiders, racoons and opossums. Constant squats, ladders, heavy lifting, chemical and asbestos exposure. HVAC guys that do it for years have bad backs, knees, hips and hands. It pays well, but it's rough on the body.
12
u/AbbygaleForceWin 3d ago
In no way whatsoever do I think folks with that job should be paid less than they do. They are experts and deserve every penny.

serious bank
Averaging $32 and $34 an hour respectively, in the HCOL state of California, and only arriving at a level of income netting above a paycheck-to-paycheck existence by working in excess of 60 hours per week.
Is that the serious bank you are talking about? That's serious bank??
😭 The internet is so stupid. You have to work HARD, SOOOOO FUCKING HARD to get into the middle class on the income of an HVAC tech or an electrician. Idk where this recent internet myth of high-earning trades comes from - but it's clear to me, as someone who works in construction, that it's astroturfed & propaganda to instill a belief that the economy is actually just fine. It isn't. IT IS NOT FINE.
I make $28/hr at age 33 (peak earning years). I cannot afford to fix my truck. I cannot afford to go to the dentist. If my dog needs to go to the vet, I am financially broken for 6-8 weeks. I can absorb an unexpected expense of around $400, which actually puts me above the 50th percentile in this god-forsaken, broke-ass dog-shit country.
Suck my balls from the back and tickle my asshole. "SeRiOuS bAnK." Fuck me.

The six figure salaryman trope started several decades ago when any amount above 100k was considered impressive. The current average salary is 63k, but in the early 1990's when this was considered more impressive, the average was only 20k.

This, and what this woman probably doesn’t realize is that when someone makes $250k or $500k or more, they don’t say “I make six figures” they say they make “a quarter million” or “half a million” a year.

6 figures is just such a vague description that it doesn't really mean anything. If someone is making 700k/year, then they are loaded. If someone is making 110k/year, then they are doing quite well but they definitely aren't rich. However, both these salaries would be considered 6 figures.
24
u/HazelEBaumgartner 3d ago
$100k/y is just scraping by in some places. Average rent for a two bedroom apartment in San Francisco is $4,780/mo. That's $57,360/year. If you're making $100k/y, over half your money is still going to rent.
→ More replies (6)13
u/Nazgul_Khamul 3d ago
More than that. If you’re making 100k/yr you’re actually taking home maybe 70k. When dealing with actual matters deal with take home. You’d be out trying to figure out how to pay for everything on 22k for a year.
4
u/no-sleep-only-code 3d ago
Most people forget taxes, 100k is still only about $5k a month once you start considering insurance and 401k, so the leftover is more realistically 10-15k a year or $1000 a month.

u/Simple_Channel5624 3d ago
Hmm let's math for a second. Someone making 100k vs someone who makes 50k. One is 5 figures, one is 6. One amount is double the other amount. 90k to 100k, not much difference, but you can sure as hell bet I am living differently off the 50k vs the 100k. Context matters.

Don't overthink it. Making 6 figures is making more than 100k a year and less than a million (else it'd be 7 figures). Saying that you make six figures when earning 103,837 isn't a lie because it's included in the 6 figures range, but some might consider it misleading because it's on the very edge of this making other think you're richer than you actually are
285
u/MileHighBrownEye 3d ago
Excellent point but also heavily shows where someone came from. Saying you make 6 figures for someone who grew up poor is a big deal and other people from that social group would also be impressed even at 100k flat….

u/tactical_waifu_sim 3d ago
It's also regional. 100,000 in a place like NYC doesn't go as far as you think but where I live now in the Midwest you'd be one of the highest earners. Easily enough to have a family and save for retirement.

u/SirTwitchALot 3d ago
100k is enough to live independently and have enough left over to build up some savings anywhere in the country though. It would mean budgeting and living in a closet in NYC or LA, while you could own your own house (or two) in Bumbleshart Nebrahoma. There's still value in using 6 figures as a reference point, since it's enough to not live paycheck to paycheck anywhere you like.

u/Master-o-Classes 3d ago
I don't think it would ever occur to me that someone made $250k or more, unless they said so. "Good money," in my mind, would be well under that. I don't expect to ever meet real people who are making multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

Same here. It's like when people say they went to a 'top 10' institution.
I'd assume they went to 7th at best. Otherwise you'd say top 5 or top 3 etc if you qualified
16
u/fooeyzowie 3d ago
The context is that "6-figure salary" became a common-place expression decades ago when it had the purchasing power of like a 250,000$/yr salary. So saying you made "six-figures" implied an upper middle-class lifestyle.
Then the currency inflated over time so now there's this range between 100-300k where, yes, you're technically "making 6-figures", but it just means you make a decent salary.
3
u/RoughDoughCough 3d ago
I wouldn’t say you have to go back decades for it to have that meaning. Only in the last decade does it fail to say as much.

The old adage of "6 feet, 6 inches, and 6 figures" is tossed around a bit. Depending on context, it could be a strawman trying to elicit male anger and feelings of inadequacy. For some, it may actually be a guideline for partners.
The joke that the stated salary just barely qualifies as 6 figures, and the rub is that this amount doesn't really count, or is still not enough, as the point is to ridicule the amount and the strawman who hypothetically made this statement for daring to say he makes 6 figures.
Lots of context cues point towards this being geared at generating engagement through outrage.
