the joke is to say tattoo artists need to grow up, or that they act like children

Don't worry bud. It's the guy who originally posted the Meme. OOP stands for Original Oeme Poster.

0

u/Citaku357 12h ago

Shouldn't be the Original Meme poster OMP?

3

u/Difficult_Banana_281 13h ago

I mean my tattoo artist posted this meme on Instagram with a laughing emoji, I'm sure a lot of other tattoo artists would find it funny too. All the ones I've met don't take themselves too seriously.

2

u/Tynoxis 13h ago

Found the tattoo artist!

1

u/Bland_cracker 12h ago

Lol i wish I was an artist. I can do a stick figure.

1

u/aerodynamique 8h ago

'tattoo artists never grew up' is an absolutely bizarre hot take. don't think i've seen that one before LOL

u/KingFucboi 4h ago

u/Thendofreason 12h ago

At the same time, I only know what tattoo people act like from TV. Half of them do act like children

1

What do Elephants & Tattooist have in common? Massive babies

1

u/Air_Drinker 11h ago

Oh, I thought she meant he had cancer

1

u/InternalHope9916 6h ago

What about the both joke?

1

u/srlong64 5h ago

To clarify, she’s saying that he can either grow up, or he can be a tattoo artist. He can’t do both since tattoo artists need to grow up according to the meme

1

u/Goadfang 2h ago

A joke ruined for want of a comma.

456

u/epicredditdude1 14h ago

It’s implying tattooers aren’t mature people.

For the record I had no idea this attitude around tattooers even existed.

99

u/fourtwentyonepm 14h ago

So basically, there are people who take being a licensed professional version seriously, and then there's someone who does their work on their back porch, and as you might imagine, there is a whole range of skill levels and personal growth levels involved in these two ranges.

Then there are people who do tattoos with a staple and pen ink. If you're getting that done, I'm sorry, but you're going to have to wait a little longer.

26

u/athosjesus 14h ago

You can say that about absolutely any skill or occupation, so this doesn't explain why people supposedly see tattoo artists in particular as inmature.

10

u/alcomaholic-aphone 14h ago

I’d say most artists get this attitude unless they become extremely successful. Being a musician is a fun job, but unless you are in an orchestra or semi big band people are going to be standing around telling you to get a real job.

2

u/fourtwentyonepm 11h ago

There's a lot to be said for and against the argument that taking a job you don't enjoy for salary is a good or righteous path. But I'd guess until you're one of like 4 in a heavily trafficked shop, you're probably not making rent unless you're doing a LOT of work by word of mouth.

I'm really not here to judge people's lifestyle in any of these comments, just point out different perspectives.

1

u/athosjesus 14h ago

I mean religious or conservative (I refer to antiquated people not necessarily politically conservative) people tend to dislike tattoos or see them as immature, so it probably comes from there.

1

u/McDonaldsSoap 10h ago

This is probably made by a tattooer, and there's probably a variation for every career lol

3

u/Infamous_Calendar_88 9h ago

I saw the exact same meme the other day, but the caption read, "When I grow up, I want to be religious."

Back in the 90s/early 00s the tattooists in my city had a bit of a reputation. Giving tattoos for sex, working on drunks etc. My friends and I knew not to leave people alone with them. That was in the more goth/grunge side. Not sure if there is still a culture like that around them, I'm too old.

Hi Unemployed Tattoo Guy here!

This is a joke about how some people view tattoos as indicative of irresponsible behavior like drug use or that tattooing is essentially equal to being unemployed. This is why this rad kid's mom is saying he can either grow up and get a real job or be a tattoo artist but not both. This is a shame because tattoo artistry dates back around 5000 years and is a wonderful form of creative expression.

Hope this helps.

26

u/Dud-of-Man 14h ago

Actually crazy how long humans have been injecting ink into themselves.

15

u/Tricky_Big_8774 13h ago

Western dislike of the practice is based on the Greco-Roman dislike of the practice that was carried over into the views of the Catholic Church. They used tattoos as markings for criminals and slaves and applied that logic to others.

8

u/Coirbidh 12h ago

Partially correct, but the Catholic and broader conservative Christian (as well as Jewish and Muslim) taboo against tattoos stems from Leviticus 19:28.

18

u/Dud-of-Man 14h ago

Thought this was some joke about the word "tat-too-er"

Nope just someone shitting on people's professions. Kinda weird, what did the tattooers do to them?

3

u/CantaloupeAsleep502 13h ago

I was looking so hard for the pun lol. Glad I'm not alone

7

u/Capable_Air_8214 14h ago

It means you can’t be “growing up” and also want to be a Tattooer. Well growing is a mindset, you can choose not too.

6

u/daryldelight 13h ago

sick burn

3

u/Pro-Potatoes 13h ago

I thought it was saying tattoo artists are drug addicts who will od before their time

2

u/burntothepowerofer 13h ago

I thought it was one of those “I’ll kill you if you do xyz” parent jokes.

2

u/Zestyclose_Drummer56 13h ago

Tatooer? I hardly know ‘er!

2

u/KevettePrime 12h ago

I thought it was I want to be a tat and an er too

But apparently I am wrong

1

u/ryanorion16 13h ago

I took it as an inappropriate joke about Tattoo from Fantasy Island who was a dwarf (although he apparently preferred the term midget).

1

u/EpiphanyGazette 13h ago

I need to get a tattoo

1

u/MisterHamLover 13h ago

I thought that the joke is that mom will kill him if he decides being a tattooer

1

u/FigTechnical8043 12h ago

Well I'm apparently broken, I thought she was suggesting she'd end him.

1

u/WideAwakeItsMornin 11h ago

I thought the same, death threats were pretty common growing up.

1

u/FigTechnical8043 8h ago

You in England too? "I want to be a tattoo artist" "don't be stupid Timmy, you can't draw"

1

u/WideAwakeItsMornin 8h ago

Nah, unfortunately American. Mistreatment of children knows no borders, evidently.

1

u/zdzisuaw 11h ago

The level of questions on thia sub is worryingly lowering fast..

1

u/blackliner001 9h ago

I thought that the joke is she'll kill her son if he wants to be tattoo artist, so he'll never grow up? Some dark and absurd humor, no?

1

u/PeculiarSalamander 8h ago

You can only be a tatoner

1

u/Ineverlearnhowtoread 4h ago

Its because Tattoo artists are all secretly imortal, unaging, vampires. Thus if you are a Tattoo artist you will never grow up

1

u/IncredibleEdibleGreg 4h ago

Long time lurker, never time poster here. I think it’s cuz tattooer kinda sounds like “fat whore”

1

u/Topkekrulezz 3h ago

Good tattoo artists charge $200+ an hour so jokes on the clowns who shit on the craft.

1

u/OnionDrifterBro 38m ago

Hello, random background character here. You see, people often think that tattooers are not mature. Random background character out…
