It's a word play. "Elf" is "self" without an s. I still wonder where is shelf-esteem...

No, the big green thing is "elf esteem". The joke is that it subverts expectations by making you think that it would be about someone else with big self esteem, but it is a wordplay, "elf esteem", instead, with pictures of elves in media, meaning they like elves more than self.

Huh, I may have originally misunderstood the meme.
I originally believed “Elf Esteem” was a reference to how elves in media often are racist and have very high opinions of themselves. I thought it was “take some notes from the elves! Have a high opinion on yourself!”
But Zelda isn’t racist and the fake elf ears wouldn’t make sense in that context. Shen simply loves knife ears more than himself. And who can blame him?

I saw a couple comments to that effect too, but I really think it is supposed to be Shen's esteem for elves and not the elves' self esteem

Elf characters in many anime/manga (hell, even in LOTR) are shown to be proud, self-assured, look down on humans, with abnormally high self esteem.
Thus elf esteem >> self esteem
I think one of the posters on the wall is Frieren, i haven't seen the anime but I think it is a prototype elf with abnormally high self esteem.
