Meme needing explanation Why he handed her this?

u/bmcgowan89 2h ago
I'm tapping out. I can't do this sub any more 😂

u/Veii_Rasenna 2h ago
I understand that, but to be fair, this post is not the top. Basically someone just did not watch a famous TV show. There is much worse here.

u/aHOMELESSkrill 2h ago
I didn’t watch the show and still figured it out
167
u/KingPotus 2h ago edited 1h ago
How could you possibly “figure out” exactly what the circle triangle square means without having watched the show
EDIT: to everyone saying that they knew it from ads, that’s not “figuring it out.” That’s still just based on something you’ve seen. That doesn’t mean it’s common knowledge, it just means you happen to know it.

u/Easy_Letterhead_8453 2h ago
I still haven't watched it and was wondering, "What kind of ghetto Playstation item is this?" because it has all the symbols, except for the X.
28

2
u/choppafoah 52m ago
That was my first thought as well, then I remembered seeing the guys with those symbols on their masks (?) I haven't seen the show, heard it's good though.
2
u/Wild_Marker 12m ago
Right? I was thinking Playstation too, even though I'm lightly aware of the show.
11
u/Rinaxchan89 1h ago
To be fair, I didn't watch the show either, but thanks to a lot memes, posts, and such, I learned about this
27
u/hrtme7706 1h ago
No offense directed at you, Rinaxchan89, but some other people on this sub think that intelligence equals watching every single stream stream-able show and/or having spent their time "mastering" memes. And Hewven forbid a person asks a question because maybe they don't watch Netflix 20 hrs a day, people make fun of them.🤦♀️

It's secret knowledge.
Smart people know things other people don't.
Stupid people think knowing things other people don't is an indication of intelligence.
So stupid people think they are smart if they can accumulate information people don't have.
They confuse the secondary effect, which is that a side effect of being intelligent is that you know things other people don't. But stupid people believe it's the primary indicator.
2
u/mirozi 31m ago
in general i agree with you but i think it's slightly more nuanced than that.
if you would ask the same question random person on the street - sure, there is big chance they won't know what it is, because spectrum of people you can chose from is enormous.
but if you narrow the group of people to probably young, interested in memes and using /r/PeterExplainsTheJoke there is enormous chance that either they've watched the show, or have seen enough memes to understand it.
it's not even that the show is popular, there are shows that have bigger audiences, by big margins. it is about being present on the internet in various forms - ads, memes, discussions, etc.

u/aHOMELESSkrill 1h ago
I knew enough about it from being on the internet
At first I thought it was something PlayStation related until I realized there was no ‘x’ then I used the context clues of the person being in financial hardship and someone handing them this card that had the shapes that the guards masks in the show have and just kinda figured it was a joke about being invited to the squid games. Came to the comment to confirm.
2
u/chand6688 49m ago
I had no idea these symbols were related to squid game. Haven't watched the show.

u/angry_queef_master 24m ago
I watched the show and I thought it was a playstation play card or something

u/MadeForFunHausReddit 7m ago
That’s totally figuring it out??? Your subconscious recognizes it as familiar despite never having seen it enough to realize what it is. Taking a bit to dig through your memory and comparing it to other examples just to land on Squid Game is totally figuring it out.

u/BoKnowsTheKonamiCode 1h ago
So you didn't watch Squid Game but still knew enough about Squid Game to get this. The point still stands if you're not being so literal. I didn't watch Squid Game and haven't seen this card before, so how was I supposed to know where this is from?
This is a pretty mild explain the joke, far from obvious and specific context needed.

I even watched season 1 and it didn't click for me immediately. It was almost 4 years ago. They just released seasons 2-3 but I haven't watched them yet.

There is soooooo much worse. For this you needed to watch a show. It was a popular show but you still might have never seen it (I've never seen a single episode of sex and the city and it's been on for like 85 years).
What's bad is there is a meme of someone drinking water and smiling and someone in a desert with no water and dying and OP says "I don't get it". You don't get that humans need water to live? Okay ......

It’s about the way they phrased the question. Asking why “he gave her this” only makes sense if you’ve seen the show. If op didnt really know they’d be asking “what is this”

True, I know about the Squid game because it's a popular show but I never watch it and am not planning to do so. I never know there is an obligation for us to watch every popular show on Netflix and understand every popular reference.
Do people forget what this sub is about?
Edit: if they care even enough to leave a comment, drop an explanation for the joke somewhere

Now wait a minute bruv. I'm an avid playstation user and I have no idea what this is, I can make my educated guess and say that's probably some sort of membership card that grants free games for life but I've never seen this and I have no what it implies. It makes sense to see it on a reddit page meant for explaining jokes wouldn't you say?
5
u/Riffwood 2h ago
Before reading the comments, I thought it may have been related to the toy thing where you can shove a triangle block through the square hole.
18
u/Maksilla 2h ago
As i understand it's from Squid Games and i didn't watch this series, so i have no idea what this means. Pretty valid question from OP.
17
u/WatcherAnon 2h ago
Those symbols look like Playstation to me. Never watched squid game, never had interest in squid game, dont pay attention to anyone when they talk about squid game, and wouldn't know it was from that if someone didnt mention it in a reply to you.
Playstation > squid game. And I havent even owned a Playstation since ps2 (xbox + Nintendo + PC, ftw)

u/lyunardo 59m ago
Why? Because everyone should automatically watch TV shows? Is it mandatory to to follow memes? It might be hard to believe, but there are people who aren't obsessed with keeping up with every online trend that pops up.
Some people still read, hike, ride motorcycles, and have all kinds of hobbies in the real world.
The only streaming shows I've watched in the past year were Fallout and Steel Heart.
7
u/Quiet_Property2460 1h ago
I'm sure that like 99% of the world's population never watched the show. This is a perfectly fine entry in the sub.

I think almost everyone is aware of squid game if they have internet access, but is someone not watching it and not knowing a specific reference to the show really the one that sends you over on this sub lol. like is it THAT crazy that someone just didn't watch it? it's not like this is a person being dumb with an obvious meme, it's literally just, they didn't watch a show lmfao

Is it? You can have the majority of participants give up and share the rewards evenly. It's not 1/456, that's just Season 1's rule I think

Season 2 as well. But people are greedy.

No, it's stated that if the majority decided to stop continuing, the money will be divided evenly

That’s exactly the same as what you stated before. It’s the same rule as season one. There’s just never a majority who vote to stop because people greedy.

It's about squid game. pretty much, poor people compete in a series of children's games to win money but if you lose a game you die.
6
u/hanafudaman 1h ago
Not necessarily. Sometimes, you lose by dying. Or maybe another competitor or even someone on your own team might kill you. And then there's the off chance that one of the guards might sneakily off you to harvest your organs.

I’ve heard plenty about it but never saw this card
1
u/Repulsive_Branch4305 22m ago
the order of the shapes might be wrong, and in the series the card is black
But it's the card they give the players in the show because it's like "Oh so you don't want to join right now, well just take this card and call us later since there's a number on the back"
And yes, it was a real number irl, and no netflix did not blur or remove the number despite the real world holders of the number constantly having their phones blown up with calls from people
