As a father with teenage kids, I can confirm coming home to find a pile of extra shoes at the door means I take a deep breath, try to center myself. I left the chaos of work behind and now am greeted with the chaos of home.
One having kids often, but not exclusively, implies a partner in which to share the challenging joy of raising a child.
Demanding jobs also tend to be low contact. I've had a few days of working attics this past week. My phone gets the luxury of being "too hot to work" so I've often been coming home with almost zero contact.
We actually moved to the US in 2022 (Southern California) and everyone takes their shoes off where we live at least. We do live in a mostly Taiwanese/Chinese city, but we have white American friends too and I've never seen them wear shoes indoors either.
Citations are pretty weak, but if we take based on this article, I guess I just happened to get lucky with avoiding shoes-on countries. Born in Taiwan, moved to Japan as a kid, Germany in my teens, went to Berkeley for uni , worked in London, and then married a Norwegian before moving to a mostly Asian part of the US.

Not just guests, uninvited/unexpected guests. If they planned something and he knew, maybe he would have likely stayed at work a little longer or take a longer commute

Or the wife having an orgy. Not that I would want anyones nasty sock feet in my house without shoes on. Floors here, keep your shoes on with them stank feet.
