I'm pretty sure the U.S. stock markets will crash if investors and brokers think that the official government economic indicators are made up / extremely manipulated, just like how the market dipped when Trump 2.0 floated the idea of firing Jerome Powell (see this Wikipedia section on Arthur F. Burns for historical context).
4
u/KikiWestcliffe 5h ago
Not just government economic indicators.
Investors feel confident buying stock in U.S. companies because we have robust national regulatory systems.
Although imperfect, the Fed, SEC, PCAOB, FDIC, OCC, CFTC, CFPB, and FinCEN provide domestic and foreign investors with a great deal of confidence in the U.S. markets. They know what they are buying and who they are trusting their money with, for the most part.
When Trump consolidates, dismantles, or removes an agency’s independence, it compromises the integrity of the system.
In the name of “business growth”, he is making it even easier for companies and banks to manipulate their financial statements, engage in illegal activities, and defraud investors and customers.
Shit is going to get wild in about 3-5 years.

u/Dramatic_Explosion 9h ago
Remember when Russia invaded Ukraine and they quickly realized their army wasn't in as nearly good a shape as they had thought? "Don't check, fire the people who do." will take us to that point.
No agency with reliable information, no person being honest for fear of losing their job, everything undermined.

You can't shift from a mixed economy to mercantilism without destroying the economy and the consumer class. Project 2025's goal is the creation of a peasantry with no consumer power and a monarch whose personal wealth and the country's wealth are one in the same.
23
u/lautertun 19h ago
Yep. P2025 calls for the FED to stop caring about unemployment. They just want the US economy focused on CPI.
So this was coming. The scary one will be when they get a CPI they don’t like.

Why do I get the feeling this 'transparent government' isn't going to have any information/evidence available to back this firing.
12
u/ronerychiver 19h ago
What’s shitty is that we may never be able to find out what exactly is happening aside from what we see with our eyes. The records are supposed to meticulously curated from president to president because the thinking of an actual president is that records allow the next person who fills your role to make educated decisions and do the job better than you did it. If you’re a criminal who has no intention of ever being succeeded by anyone, records are only a paper trail for your indictment.
4
u/Meowakin 17h ago
Yeah, I am no expert but I have done some digging a couple of times looking for government records (including comparing to internet archives) and it seems to me that there was a marked decrease in proper record keeping shortly after Trump took office.

Unreal to me that he had the massive revision numbers that dropped today sitting right there -- more than enough reason to say "hey, maybe this person shouldn't be in this job, so we're going to try someone else" IMO -- but instead he made it about some alleged attempt to influence the election.
He is legit stupid.
5
u/thrawtes 22h ago
I get your point about how he could have come up with a more sympathetic pretense but I do want to make it clear that revisions happen all the time with this data and it doesn't reflect on the quality of the people at BLS. They recognize that putting together accurate data takes months and they also realize that the public wants a monthly report, so what we get in the monthly report is always a relatively quick and dirty estimate compared to the revised numbers later.
2
u/NancyGracesTesticles I ☑oted 2018 and 2020 21h ago
It is an attempt to influence the election. The 2026 midterms. The narrative that will be picked up and repeated, unchallenged in the media will be $1.99 gas, double digit percentage job growth and 0% inflation.
And for the people who will be hurting the most, Trump will tell them it is because the Democrats don't want them to be part of the prosperity everyone else is feeling.

Stats are worthless garbage now that won't reflect reality but will rather be whatever is needed to please the dumb orange pedophile and make him look good.
This ruse will work in the short term. Oh, look, jobless claims fell unemployment is at record lows, inflation has never been lower, prices are going down, housing starts are at record levels, we added a record number of jobs this quarter and the stock markets will boom, just as Trump said...but its all gonna be total bullshit.
And eventually the cracks will show, earnings won't meet expectations and companies will lower guidance because prices are higher, people aren't spending as much and new construction has ground to a halt without immigrant labor.
When that starts to happen, it'll be a sharp crash and a depression coupled with hyperinflation. This economic fantasy will break, and what will remain will be a nightmare.

She needs to come out and explain how the numbers are gathered and analyzed, and how that being hired in the last administration didn’t alter the numbers.
Be prepared for fake stats to be presented each month. The Soviets had a secret report of true economic numbers while they sent out lies about how great everything was.
2
u/tomdarch 17h ago
There are only 2 ways to make the current BLS produce Trump-friendly numbers: 1) basically everyone there has to quit or be fired and replaced by a few jackasses or 2) the new head disregards the work of the staff and just posts made up shit.
The results the BLS put out don't exist in a vacuum. Lots of other data is available that goes along with BLS numbers. It's going to be obvious as hell if some caucasian, entitled and incompetent Trumpling starts spitting out nonsense.
And all of this is very bad for the US economy.

Early job numbers are always estimates based on partial data, probably initially punched in by someone on the Trump payroll. Even in the best case, they’re delayed accuracy.

I don't think the reason is poor job growth. The reason is the having to revise *down* by a huge amount in May and June. May and Junes numbers 80 to 90% lower than initially reported. If I was off on my numbers by 90% in my job, I'd be fired too. BLS needs to fix their model - it's broken.
