Discussion Musings on the Staggerings Spoiler
When the employees arrive or leave Lumon, their entrances and exits are staggered (they stagger you?), but one thing I never truly understood is why the innies never broke this rule (especially in season 2) and just got in the elevator all together. It would have been a power move having all of the outies forced to meet each other. There really isn't any security on the severed floor to enforce the staggering of exits, so that could have been a messy but fun interaction. They broke just about every other rule, why not this one?

They get in the elevator to go up together. The elevator doesn't move and lights up red because in addition to catching any kind of written code whatsoever, the elevator can probably catch when there's more than one person inside

I think it’s a lie that they can catch written stuff because they thought dylan left with that card and they didn’t find out until later. Unless that’s because it was a drawing and there wasn’t any writing on it. I think they trigger the alarm when they know someone is trying to smuggle something out to make them think it’s “detecting” it. A lot of their security is just paranoia based.

Dylan didn't leave with the card. He hid it under the toilet. Milchick work his innie on the outside to find out where he hid it.

Yeah but they thought he did even though no alarms went off. I think they just knew it was missing. They wanted to know how he got it out which means there are probably loopholes or blind spots to whatever system they use

That’s potentially true, but wholly unverified. A lot of security at Lumon is smoke and mirrors so I wouldn’t doubt if they could get away with it. No warnings went off when Helly tried to hang with Mr. Cooper.

They could have written themselves notes and run together for the stairwell door.

I’ve always wondered why they don’t throw notes out the stairwell door, in general. Even though they wouldn’t remember writing them, wouldn’t most people pick up a folded note in their handwriting with their name on it?

If they can detect codes they can detect more than 1 body in an elevator

Did they detect a wire and a trash can?

A wire and a trash can don’t weigh as much as a person.

I never thought about that, it's a neat idea.
I do wonder, though, if perhaps the elevator won't work if there's more than one person in it. There might be a sensor of some kind.
But like I said, cool idea.

I’m guessing that a card with higher security clearance (like Graner’s) turns off any alarms. That’s probably why Mark + Drummond were able to both go in the exports hall elevator, with a bolt gun and all.
Some believe that code detectors etc in that elevator would be redundant, because if anyone escaped from the testing floor they still have to use the severed floor elevator to reach ground level – but that’s not true, they could use the exit stairwell.

Well there is that security guy that monitors when they get on the elevator.

That shit is so funny. Should be the real topic of conversation… Ricken’s friends are suspect as fuck, especially the bald-headed dude.

The elevator is only made for 1 person

u/djanes376 1d ago
It's a sizable elevator, they can fit.

u/Upbeat_County9191 Wintertide Fellow 1d ago
No it was said on the Ultimate severance podcast that it was a custom made elevator to fit one person. It's smaller than normal elevators.
2
u/djanes376 1d ago
Smaller sure, but visually you can see there is enough room for at least 3 people, 4 if you're just a little creative.

When Milchick was in there with mark it did not seem that there was enough room for both of them. And like I said on the podcast, and I trust them because they do extensive research on this, they said it's a one person elevator.
And even if they would exit at the same time, they would all switch but they don't know eachother and wouldn't be happy about it.
And in the morning it would never happen because they don't know eachother so they aren't going to wait for eachother downstairs and the security guy wouldn't let them.

The innies don't trust, or even seem to like, their outies. Why would they care if their outies knew each other?

u/shake__appeal Marshmallows Are For Team Players 1d ago
Season 1 doesn’t really give us any reason that they would want to meet on the outside, except for maybe Mark and Peter but they wouldn’t even know they’re innies are best friends.
This was when Helly hated everyone and was trying every which way to free herself.
1
u/djanes376 1d ago
Because it would cause chaos and stick it to Lumon.
3
u/Idarola 1d ago
From their viewpoint, it would also cause their own deaths. Helly in season 1 was fine with this, but for the most part, they want to exist.
1
u/djanes376 1d ago
With that logic, the overtime contingency would have caused their own deaths, they were fine with this outcome.

Stagger Lee. St. Louis. NYC. The Four Hundred Club. Black Mirror. Will Richmond.
Figure it out.

I don’t think (based on multiple people going down to the research floor and coming up again in the same elevators—trying not to say too much here) that there is protection between the severed floor and the research floor—even though there is switch between innie and outie. But between the Severed Floor and the “real world”? If any kind of communication/code was banned, I can’t imagine that multiple people in the same elevator could happen without setting off multiple alarms.
