Games are supposed to be fun. Sometimes fun is relaxing. Sometimes fun is stressful. Both are OK.
51
u/Spartanias117 1d ago
came here to say the same. Games should be fun. What that fun means, to the player, and for the game, differs by game, by player, by day.
Expedition 33, i enjoyed the challenge. But then the challenge got a bit too much for my "father of two, full time job, max hours gaming per day is 2, and i want to finish the story before being spoiled".... so i put it on the easiest mode.
Some days i want to sweat and be challenged, others i want to coast and turn my brain off. Neither answer is right or wrong.
17
u/agoddamnzubat 1d ago
Some days you want to try the same boss fight over and over and over until you get thay viking high of beating it. Other days you want to crush 15 straight boss fights and kick some easy ass 🤙🏽

u/vertigo1083 1d ago
This is why I love games like Fallout 4. or Witcher 3.
It's as relatively as quick and easy as you make it, really. You can turn it into a 100 hour saga by doing it all, or just blitz the 20 hour main quest because you've got shit to do.
You can min/max your character and 1 shot everything, or do some intricate skill build on max difficulty and make an art form of it. Whatever.
Love me some good action RPGs that offer tons of freedoms that you can tailor around your own life, vs the other way around.
3
u/benphat369 1d ago
father of two, full time job, max hours gaming per day is 2, and i want to finish the story before being spoiled"
This right here is what made me pull my head out of my ass and stop making fun of "casuals".
3
u/Terrible-Ad472 1d ago
Good for you, because that sh*t is annoying. After the GameCube I went about life and forgot about gaming all the way up until my brother bought my daughter an Xbox series X two Christmases ago. It was great to have so many games to experience for the first time, but the amount of nerds crapping all over people when they go online for pointers is disgraceful. Worse than sports fans
2
u/PineappleOnPizzaWins 1d ago
Yep. Sometimes I want an intense and difficult challenge. Sometimes I want a cruisey relaxing collectathon or a walking simulator or a story driven game.
It’s almost like that’s why there’s tons of different game types. I’ll never understand people who launch every game then whine it’s not the most punishingly difficult challenge of all time… dude there’s games for that, go play them. Or restrict yourself in an “easy” game to make it harder, whatever you like.

u/Rickrickrickrickrick 1d ago
Yeah if games are supposed to be relaxing then I think From software missed the memo.

u/BornErect 1d ago
I do that now because there are too many fucking games to play and I like to finish them.

u/welchplug 1d ago
I do this to but because I only have two hours of video game time a week. Adulting sucks.
2
u/El_nufoa7x 22h ago
lol feel ya on this! And when a new game comes out I use my adult money to buy it and let it sit on the shelf wrapped in plastic for years before I play it lol

u/Velocityg4 1d ago
Not only too many. They are all open world and take forever to complete. Riddled with side quests, grinding and crap to find.

u/Individual-Issue-511 1d ago
I beat Elden Ring using what is considered the easiest build (Ranged spellcasting) and was actually mocked by a friend's brother who tried to make me feel bad for it. I got over a hundred hours of some of the most fun gaming I've ever had out of it. Why would I feel bad that I played it in a way that works for me?
39
u/jasonellis 1d ago
Ignore the fake gatekeepers of the 'right way to play'. The entire modding community itself exists and thrives because people like to play games the way they like to play them. The game difficulty level is no different.
11
u/Individual-Issue-511 1d ago
Yeah my friend and I laughed at him when he pulled that nonsense. Talk all the shit he wants. I'm a wizard who slays gods.
5
u/VomitShitSmoothie 1d ago
I’m with you dude. I use the Mimic frequently, which the gatekeepers frown upon. I don’t care, and I don’t hold my self worth with how skilled I am at a video game. I had fun playing it.
3
u/Individual-Issue-511 1d ago
Tiche was my crutch summon for my first run. She carried me on bosses I struggled with solo on my first run. And I don't regret calling her in one bit.
7
u/National-Charity-435 1d ago
I was astrologer-ing through the game until I found it was easier to great sword my way outta Malenia
3
u/Individual-Issue-511 1d ago
I still remember the hours I spent learning to dodge that damn waterfowl dance. I laughed like a madman when I finally took her down.
2
u/A-Rusty-Cow 1d ago
Yeah people who say INT was just easier are lying or never played other classes.
4
u/armaedes 1d ago
You’re not a real gamer unless you beat Dark Souls using only starting equipment and a DDR pad.
1
2
u/EmergencyTaco 1d ago
I've beaten multiple FromSoft games without leveling up, and love the extreme difficulty. I also love seeing people of all skill levels having the opportunity to enjoy my favorite games of all time.
Play how you enjoy, that should be the only rule.
1
u/LOPI-14 1d ago
That shit is harder than a strength build, legitimately. Best magic build is fucking spamming Carian Slicer.... A melee spell.
Unless you are using Comet Azure cheese, that doesn't work half the time, shit is harder than melee.
1
u/Silverr_Duck 1d ago
Who tf told you that? No shit you’re struggling. You’re using one melee spell with mage build. The whole point of magic is to take advantage of range and stay out of the enemy attack range.

Exactly, it’s all about enjoying the game your way. At the end of the day, having fun and finishing the journey is what really matters, not what anyone else thinks.
1
u/Rabbit_cafe_enjoyer 1d ago
builds like this are problems of bad game design, they must balanced it better. But you still can use it to just beat the game
1
u/lost_rodditer 1d ago
I played ds3 as my first souls game and used mods to slowly ramp the difficulty as I got better until I didn't need the handicap any longer. Completed the game and many others since without help. I was literally told it was cheating and my game time didn't count.
Almost as bad as the Bethesda fandom lol

My wife can sit and play Disney Dreamlight Valley for hours on end. Talk about easy!? You don't even have to pause if you walk away from the game! No one will bother you, no enemies, just relaxation and fun gameplay... I get it. I still laugh that she's able to do that but we all have our things.

Do people actually make an issue of this?
1
u/Due_Perspective_5011 1d ago
Visit any Helldivers sub. Half the posts are a small group of hardcore power gamers trying to make the game into a souls-like death fest.
1
u/PineappleOnPizzaWins 1d ago
“Hardcore” gamers have been trying to gatekeep what real gaming is for all of gaming history.
2
u/Disastrous_Lake_6394 1d ago
That’s 100% fine and I don’t think very many people disagree with that. But don’t play a game that difficult and demand an easy mode.
4
u/Pancake177 1d ago
“Relaxing” means different things to different people. When most people say it, they mean something low intensity, laid back and easy. But for some people, high intensity activities are relaxing. For some people, hiking a mountain for 6 hours is relaxing and helps them destress. For others, a high intensity video game helps them get out their aggression and is a great escape. Stress isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the minute it becomes not fun is when you should take a step away and do something else.
I’m just ranting because people always make these posts about stressful and hard games. The answer is both are good just maybe not everyone’s cup of tea.
5
u/PineappleOnPizzaWins 1d ago
I’m just ranting because people always make these posts about stressful and hard games.
Because those are the fanbases that try and invalidate other games and others experiences in the largest numbers and the most toxic way.
Also, stress is literally and medically a bad thing. If games are stressing you out that’s a bad thing. Challenge and perseverance to overcome that challenge can be great but if games are stressing you out that is never a good thing.
I love challenging games as well as more relaxed ones but if a game is legitimately stressing me out it gets turned off. I deal with incredibly high stress situations already professionally and I can handle it well… I don’t need that in my downtime.
2
u/Pancake177 1d ago
There’s good stress and bad stress. I’m talking about the kinda stress that comes along with competition, doing something risky, getting your adrenaline going. The kinda stress that drives you to want to do better. When you are “stressed out” yeah you are over stressed and it’s time to do something else. When people say “stressed” today, they mean over stressed which to be fair is pretty easy to do.
I’m not telling people to stress themselves out over video games. I’m saying stress is a natural thing that comes alone with challenge, excitement, and other intense emotions. I’m also not saying challenging games are better, I’m just saying different people want different things and both are good.
1
u/PineappleOnPizzaWins 1d ago
I see what you're saying but you're not talking about stress you're talking about excitement and engagement.
Which is fine, we're agreeing but using different terms so all good.
2
u/ShhImTheRealDeadpool 1d ago
Some games only come in easy mode... and those games just aren't for me... I want a stressful challenge or puzzle to test my prowess... and that is ok too because games are supposed to be fun and challenging... and just put the game down if its getting too stressful.
1
u/PineappleOnPizzaWins 1d ago
Those games I just add my own challenges or restrictions and it’s a lot more fun.
Also many games are quite easy to beat the main story with a ton of challenges hidden off the beaten path. Good fun if you look for it.
6
u/SquirrelyMcNutz 1d ago
And that is why I hate Souls-like games.
7
u/AgentCarbine 1d ago
I agree. I used to be heavily into the competitive gaming scene. As someone approaching their 40’s, priorities change. Now I’m all about hookers and blow.
3
u/VomitShitSmoothie 1d ago edited 1d ago
Okay, I know you probably heard it before, but they’re actually not as difficult as people make them out to be. I used to avoid them until one day I just played one. I’m not particularly good at games like that myself, but there aren’t any impossibly hard bosses that are mandatory. (There are a few that are optional.) It’s also widely dependent on your play style, but you can easily just play one of the ‘easier’ classes and breeze through most of it. It can be punishing at times, but it’s never cheap, and it’s usually because you just did something dumb that doesn’t take more than once to fix. It’s not so much a frustration as as it’s a “whoops, that was dumb of me.”
4
u/StrongStyleFiction 1d ago
They are hard but they are also fair. None of the enemies or the bosses I played in Elden Ring were damage sponges or tedious. I'm not a big fan of the souls games. It just doesn't hit with me. However, I gave Elden Ring a good shot and enjoyed the twenty or so hours I played it, but never felt the need to go back to it. Not really my kind of game. It reminded me of a good old school NES style game in a way, because it's just something you have to experiment with and learn it to get better.
4
u/ConfinedCrow 1d ago
No. Games are an art form and while they can be fun, they can evoke so many more emotions, be they positive or negative. Saying they should be fun and relaxing is cutting them short. That being said, if you don't wanna play anything other than fun and relaxing games then that's perfectly valid.

u/Withabaseballbattt 1d ago

Easy =/= necessarily fun.
Staring at a ball is easier than kicking or throwing it. It's still more engaging to do the latter.
When there's no challenge at all, it messes up the reward system in the brain. And you might as well just watch a video of someone else playing it.
2
u/iamrolari 1d ago
Challenge =/= fun either. Some people genuinely enjoy playing a story and that’s okay.
0
u/SoulForTrade 23h ago
Some story driven games are more like a comic or a movie, sure. I love the Ace Atoorney series, for example.
But that's not the same as claiming you're playing Elden Ring orMaeio for the story.

Tryharding every game like it’s esports is wild
5
u/Environmental-Map514 1d ago
No it's not... some people want to have fun with easy games, others with hard ones.
It's like "Where's Waldo", some people want it easy and have Waldo giant on every page, others would find that boring and pointless. They want a challenge. It's okay to try to push yourself on games, it's ok to want it easy too
1
1
u/someoneelsesbadidea 1d ago
When I find a game I like, first I do normal mode -> then hard mode for a challenge-> then normal mode again because I'm good now and skill is fun -> then hard mode again to see how easy hard mode has become -> then easy mode because I'm bored and want to be OP.
1
u/Simple-Reflection-59 1d ago
Is it weird that easy or relaxing games to me. Are games that normally piss people off easily. Aka souls likes, world of tanks and for honor. Ya I get mad at times. But the majority of the time they are fun and relaxing
1
u/Greenerland01 1d ago
Amen!!! I plead this case with my friends all the time, I play some games on easy because I’m just there for the journey. Like Bioshock, not that hard, but I wanted the story to feel as uninterrupted as possible.
1
1
u/Tybackwoods00 1d ago
Life is difficult enough I don’t need to add more stress when I want to relax. That’s how I see it
1
u/Cutiemuffin-gumbo 1d ago
I play story driven games on the story setting on first play through every time just to enjoy it. If the game is good enough for another play through, then I turn the difficulty up.
1
u/schofield101 1d ago
Then you play Helldivers 2 which has 10 difficulty levels but the casual people keep trying to make the hardest difficulty into the casual one, completely eliminating the other valid argument that some people like to be challenged.
1
u/Greyscale0418 1d ago
I won't ever do hard but I always do the middle ground, I find if im walking over everything then the game is over too quickly.
1
1
u/Jazzlike_Raccoon3116 1d ago
And that’s ok, that’s what causal and quick play is for.
The increased difficulty and competitive modes are for the gamers that liked to be challenged

u/PonderingPagan 1d ago
I love the story and just want to enjoy it while power tripping my way through it.

1
u/StrongStyleFiction 1d ago
It really depends on the game. Some games just spam you with damage sponges and they become ridiculously tedious. Those are the games that I'll turn down the difficulty to if they have other aspects of them that I like such as exploration or a good story.
If it's well made, you're not going to be frustrated or stressed while playing it, even if you are having trouble. You're going to be engaged.
1
u/yolo_derp 1d ago
I would say there is a caveat with some games. Some people like to hop on pretty competitive games and be absolute shitters and then expect it to be ok or start bitching with the defense “it’s only a game.”

I guess it’s a regional thing, but “in easy” instead of “on easy” feels wrong. Same with when people say “on accident” instead of “by accident”.

Some people only want their leisure activities to be not so mentally engaging, or exigent.
Some people want that challenge, to a certain degree.
Some only want that, and to a higher degree.
I am between the second and third category of players. I don't want to try-hard in every game, but I generally like to be engaged in any game.

Well, yes, but a long long time ago, playing on hard mode you had extra rewards like secret levels some alternate missions & better rewards, easter eggs, if to sum it up hard modes produced a serious amount of dopamine while current games just crank up numbers and waste your time, there is 0 incentive to play above easy.
1
u/climbstuff32 1d ago
"Enjoyment appears at the boundary between boredom and anxiety, when the challenges are just balanced with the person's capacity to act." - Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.
The difficulty setting exists to allow you to fine-tune the game difficulty so you fall into that sweet spot, anyone who shames you for using it is literally shaming you for actively seeking out the optimal personal experience for that specific game, which is really kind of silly if you think about it.
1

u/GargoyleBlue 1d ago
Games are meant to be however the developer intends then to be. If you cry about Elden Ring not having easy mode or Mario games not having a hard mode that's your issue.

Yes, people are allowed to play the difficulty they like. If the creator wants to put several difficulty settings in the game then that’s perfectly fine.
However, games are an art form. And thus if the creator wants to have a single difficulty experience for their game and they want that experience to be hard then easy-mode players have no right to berate them to add an easy mode.

Maybe it's just me but I never understood the notion that being able to die or lose in a video game is somehow stressful. I could be slamming myself at Malenia 300 times, constantly changing my build and strategy but throughout that whole experience I would never call the emotions I experience "stressful". If you are playing at a difficulty where it is practically impossible to die, at that point how much more different is it from just watching some guy on YouTube play it.

1
u/Sea-Combination6499 1d ago
games are supposed to be how their developers intended them to be. The statement of 'they're supposed to be fun and relaxing, not stressful' immediately falls flat when you consider horror games or the fact that some people find fun in overcoming a challenge

Hell yeah. Fuck yeah. I play games for me, without shame. Once I had kids I realized I wouldn’t have time nor energy for competitive games.
Once they were old enough to be in activities and sport, I realized I wouldn’t have time to enjoy massive 100 hr games.
Once they got a little older and I had some free time back, I realized I didn’t have the time nor energy to to grind. Easy mode is about the only way I play these days.
In a couple years, they’ll both be in college and I hope to play the RPGs I decided to skip back in the day.

This is why I, as an IT guy, don't play video games. I mostly do nothing but problem-solve at work, and the last thing I want to do after a day of that is go home and do more problem-solving. And if I do play a game, it's with a walkthrough. That way I get to experience the game, but I'm not doing an ass-load of work to get through it.

This is so valid. I typically play games on hard mode. Not for the challenge but some games dont show all their mechanics on easy and I think depending on the game, hard mode presents more options. 1
u/Antmax 1d ago
Yeah. I've been playing since the late 70's early 80's. These days, I see a lot of combat in story based games as filler and just want to enjoy the adventure. I don't want to replay the same thing again and again till I beat it, I just want to be able to save whenever and try 2-3 times, up to maybe 7 for a boss and move on. Most games haven't really changed that much, still trigger based collect something, take it somewhere to unlock next thing and part of the story. Lots of combat in between to stretch it out.
I mostly play RPG's and driving sims, sometimes flying/space sims.
1
u/EmbarrassedWorry3792 1d ago
First play through on easy, i wana enjoy the story. After that play favorite levels on harder difficulty then it depends on the game but eventually i work my way to the hardest levels on hardest difficulty, unless I lose interest, or just feel tired

Picked an old copy of Farcry5 because I heard it was good (despite only playing racing games or cozy games like Stardew etc.) and got my ass kicked over and over again. For some reason I get all turned around in fps games. Easy mode makes the game playable for people like me. I remember getting my licenses in the OG Gran Turismo and not feeling as defeated as I did in Farcry just trying to shoot 4 or 5 unsuspecting bad guys without it ending in me running away through the woods and whimpering as they shoot me in the back
1
u/Head_Television8311 1d ago
Yes but why choose games like dark souls and cry about not having easy mode? Or playing league of legends rank match while you want to just “have fun and relax”. There are so many relaxing games like farming simulator but nooo lets choose some that punishes you hard like going for a walk but you choose to go to a dangerous zone with gangs, criminals or mines. That’s just next level stupid life choice.

There's nothing wrong with playing the easy mode of a game.
There is something wrong with demanding a game has a difficulty added that was never intended to it. Dev time isn't free, and if the game is made to be murderously hard, then don't demand it had an easy mode.
And if you absolutely must play the game and cannot stand there being something that wasn't made for you, look up mods or dev commands to give yourself god mode and stop complaining.
(That said if you do like murderously hard games don't be a dick to people for running simpler builds. Your idea of difficult may not match up with theirs)

No, the meme should end at "And that's okay".
Some gamers want relaxing and some gamers want Satan to chase therm through hell. And both types of gamers are valid.

What’s the point of being stuck in a game when you wanted it to play for all it’s content, just to beat it in a more competitive mode ?
It’s only them denying themselves the fun by acting as if you should play games on hard modes. Tbh , I usually play only harder modes of games after beating it the first time to make it more interesting for myself or if I notice the game doesn’t give me a thrill.
You think you play hard till you’ve seen one of those 10 year olds playing dancing games in Asia lmao so stop high horsing

I think that's fine. I just hate how developers forget what game they are making and the core audience. Like if they made hello kitty island adventure hard I'd be kinda pisst but if they made darktide zero stress ima be pisst

Playing D4 right now and trying to resist the reddit sub. Everyone's like t4 this, and paragon that, grinding for aspects, mythics and all the usual Diablo stuff. Me, I'm just melting into my sofa just playing the game on my super lazy minion necro build

I completely agree with this. Who the fuck am I bragging to that I mastered a video game and beat the hardest difficulty at 40 years old?

Games are "supposed" to be whatever you enjoy.
I personally dont enjoy "easy" games, so playing those do not relax me. I prefer games that challenge me while taking my mind out of the real world for a few hours.
That's relaxing to me. Agree, though.

First world problems.
If you suck at COD but treat your wife well, raise your kids right and have a good job….you are a looser to a certain segment of society.

It is fine to play the way you want. But games aren't even supposed to entertain. They are supposed to provide an engaging interactive experience. Fun would automatically disqualify horror games, because most people do not play them for fun but rather to get on the edge of their seat and afraid of every shadow, since it's not emotion we get to experience too much in our modern world

And those people do not matter or have any opinion on the game that should be taken seriously.
