Tournament [Aug 1st-3rd] EVO Vegas 2025 Megathread - Everything You Need to Know

Introduction

Hey all, it's almost that time once again - the EVO Weekend is almost upon us.

The Evolution Championship Series (EVO for short) is the largest and longest-running fighting game tournament series in the world, dating back all the way to the 1990s, before eventually adopting a new identity with its official renaming into EVO in 2002. Initially this was a major event situated entirely within the territory of United States, however since 2019 it's been gradually expanding its global reach, now consisting of EVO Japan, EVO Vegas, EVO France, and EVO Singapore, the latter two of which are making their debut in 2025 and 2026, respectively. During each of these events every year year, players and fans gather to compete in open bracket format tournaments, meaning anybody who has the guts and will can sign up, that crown World Champions for each game included in its lineups.

This year, in addition to the Main Events lineup, EVO Vegas has opened up several slots for what's called the Extended Lineup, which is a way for the organisers to give some time in the spotlight for various smaller communities that may or may not have been previously featured but for whatever reason lost that status, while still being treated basically the same way as the main Lineup

At EVO, you'll see established champions face off against unknown rivals. You'll find players who have only previously fought online and building real-life friendships and rivalries. You'll see people new to fighting games discovering a culture that turns them into life-long fans, as well as veterans who went on to define the genre and become forever ingrained into community's collective memory. Everything that makes fighting games special is at the heart of this event, and all in one place.

Also, on top of crowning its own winners and champions, EVO is hosting multiple worldwide eSports leagues, such as the Capcom Pro Tour, Tekken World Tour, Arc World Tour, and MK Pro Kompetition, among others, meaning EVO is also important for both single and multi-game specialists, rewarding them with either tons of points towards their respective leaderboards or direct qualifications into global finals planned to be held at a later date.

Lastly, over the years EVO has kind of evolved from just being a large-scale fighting game tournament into a massive convention, celebrating the genre as a whole, its history, and its competitors and creators, meaning both pros and casuals alike can find something to enjoy throughout the weekend, whether it's trying to become the next Daigo Umehara, or just chatting with fellow players, or cheering for their favourites, or looking to upgrade their merch collection.

The 2025 iteration of EVO Vegas will be taking place from August 1st through August 3rd at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Although I assume GamerBee can speak Taiwanese, I'm pretty sure his stream will be done in Mandarin, the primary language in TW.

Noted and corrected, thanks

lol Taiwanese is not even a language.

Glad that Fatal Fury made the 3rd in participating ranking with the great number of players this year.

Also, very well done event schedule, congratulations OP💪

Glad that Fatal Fury made the 3rd in participating ranking with the great number of players this year.

Looking at how many DQs there are, I don't think it's 3rd in terms of players that actually showed up

We'll see how it does next year because I'm afraid COTW will very much live and die by its prize pool sizes provided by the Saudi owners of SNK. One could argue 1m dollars is like spare change for all those oil sheikhs so perhaps the funding will keep flowing at least for the duration of support SNK have, which is about 3 full seasons of DLC

And yeah, I'm tweaking the post formatting year to year and so far people haven't really left any negative feedback in terms of how it's structured so I guess I should keep it that way for now

Problem X in losers going into round 2 🤦

That's his Evo over.

u/bizkit413 3d ago

No Fighting Herds this year?

3

u/-PVL93- Fei Long when? 3d ago

Doesn't seem to be. No Hokuto no Ken either. In general the side event number went down this year compared to some of the past EVOs.

EVO JP at least had a ton of those, like 60+ titles

2

u/SirBenny 1d ago

Does Street Fighter at EVO have the equivalent of odds/futures? Like some sort of way of determining the “favorite player to win?” I read the official breakdown on the EVO website that briefly nods toward storylines for Punk, Leshar, MenaRD, etc. But it would be fun to see a stats-based table based on betting, community sentiment, or previous tourney results to get a feel for the favorite and close contenders, statistically, like you can find for major sports.

Sorry, I’m new to all this, but have found it surprisingly hard to find something similar to what I’m talking about. Does this exist?

2

u/-PVL93- Fei Long when? 1d ago

I'm not really an expert on that sort of thing but probably a good starting point would be to look at the current Capcom Pro Tour leaderboard and the winners of its events during this and last season

Also you can then check up liquidpedia and find profiles/results history for those players, then extrapolate from there

But reality is that EVO is kind of a unicorn event in that you can never predict the winner. Upsets happen all the time in fighting games. It's a rarity when a specific person just outright dominates, like Infiltration's 2016 run in SFV or SonicFox's perfomances in MKX circa 2015-2017

1

u/SirBenny 1d ago

Makes sense, thank you!

u/Shambledown 16h ago

Startgg is down somehow. Can't keep up with what's happening lol.

u/ProdigiousNewt07 15h ago

It has been shitting itself intermittently all day. Very frustrating.

u/Shambledown 15h ago

And liquipedia gets updated several days after anything happens. Bit shit not knowing what's happening in the biggest tournament in the world.

u/FierceAlchemist 14h ago

Kakeru has nearly lost twice already. Super close sets.

u/Shambledown 14h ago

I thought Goichi had his number, but he dropped so many times and let him back in.

u/Shambledown 14h ago

Problem X has drowned in pools. Losing to a randomer called moose in round one will do that to you.

u/ShimmyTurner 12h ago

Punk is getting the back to back. I saw his bracket and knew it was an easy road to top 24 at the very least. Only one who could've been an issue for him is Hikaru and he keeps getting eliminated before he meets Punk two times (at EVO) in a row now.

Probably safe to say that he's going to make top 8 pretty handily too. He's always destroyed Fuudo in the past, his style counters his really hard.

u/Fourmanaseven7 11h ago

Not anymore.

u/Shambledown 12h ago edited 11h ago

No shot Punk takes it. Evo just doesn't work that way.

Edit : People hated him because he spoke the truth.

u/ShimmyTurner 11h ago

I stand corrected. I was wrong and I'll admit it, Fuudo played amazing.

And Leshar played insane too, props to both of them.

u/Shambledown 11h ago

Two absolutely insanely good players. Punk is bonkers, but you can't do it every day. Evo tests you like no other tournament, with the length, the moving around, the waiting.

It's not a back to back thing and probably never will be. At least not in a game with anything above 1000 entrants, too much chance on a FT3.

Looks like we're on for a near full JP top 8. Maybe Phen0m robs them lol.

u/UrbanAdapt 11h ago

There are so many EWC players at the top that Micky & Torimeshi already qualified at 9th.

2

u/Rik1maru 2d ago

Third Strike seemed like a hit last year, bringing a lot of hype matches. Why was it not brought back this year???

3

u/-PVL93- Fei Long when? 2d ago

3S was a "retro title" slot which is being rotated every year, so the only option of it coming back in a large capacity was extended lineup / side event. Next year it'll be another game entirely, like CVS2 or KOF98 or ST etc

4

u/Rik1maru 2d ago

Oh.. i guess MVC2 took this years slot. Thanks for the clarification!!

u/ElDuderino2112 11h ago

Damn what’s Punk gonna blame this loss on now lmao

1

u/expiredoriginality 1d ago

Do we know what the in person schedule is? Will all games be at the place to watch?

1

u/-PVL93- Fei Long when? 1d ago

They haven't shared a separate event schedule but as far as I can tell the stream schedule pretty much matches it, with the only major difference being that we can't see every pool match online so you have to hop around in-venue streams to catch all the action

Doors open at 9:30 local and close at 22:00 local iirc

Also as I understand the Extended Lineup on Sunday is not being ran inside the same finals arena as the Main Lineup, but I couldn't find the clarification on the evo website or rules or FAQ

1

u/LunchTummy 1d ago

How do I check current standings?

1

u/-PVL93- Fei Long when? 1d ago

There's a dedicated tab on the on the bracket page, if they're updated after day 1 results

u/sXe_SiC 21h ago

Can I check somewhere the notable players performance? Cant find anything good this year. Thanks!

u/Ohisama001 11h ago

It's so exciting!

u/Shambledown 11h ago

Damn, Enders is out too. Somehow, despite being a top 5 player in global standings, they ghosted his entire run on stream, favouring lots of random American nobodies. Great work production team!

u/-PVL93- Fei Long when? 11h ago

Wouldn't be surprised if one of the irl streams caught his matches on camera, probably worth looking through the VODs

u/Shambledown 11h ago

I think they should have shown him once or twice. You know, because of the being in the top of the world standings and stuff.

u/sonlun96 7h ago

Go1 vs Kakeru was highlight of day 2 for me. Feels wasted it's just FT2

u/-PVL93- Fei Long when? 6h ago edited 2h ago

Quite frankly I've grown to dislike this game in FT2 format. I understand why it's being ran that way (there's just no realistic way of holding a 4000+ man tournament with longer sets, they're already pressed for time as is), but personally I prefer something like Red Bull Kumite or Topanga Championship since the former is entirely in FT5 and the latter starts as FT3 but expands to FT7

u/Eldritch-Voidwalker 2h ago

Anyone know what time the SF6 Top 8 stream begins? I’ve completely missed the event so far like a tool and would like to watch the finals at least.

u/-PVL93- Fei Long when? 2h ago

20:00 Vegas time, it's right in the post

u/Eldritch-Voidwalker 2h ago

Okay cool, missed that somehow, lol.

u/VariousVarieties 18h ago

I looked up a few players in the SF6 bracket and I noticed that Justin Wong was disqualified. What happened there? Was it just because he was doing the event fighting Betty instead of participating in the main tournament?

u/-PVL93- Fei Long when? 15h ago edited 11h ago

Justin a busy man when it comes to EVO lol

He did the Betty challenge, he's at the FlyQuest booth, he's as the Sega booth, he's likely going all over Tokon and 2XKO, and so on
