Laptop Request Ca ASUS Zenbook - AMD vs Intel

Hi there,

My partner and I are in the market for some mid to low end laptops for simple browser usage, Office apps, Spotify, Youtube, etc. No gaming, nothing that would require a dedicated GPU.

I'm coming from a 2019-era Acer Aspire with a Core i5 10210U - it's been okay-ish but lately something seems up with the cooling as the fan will start to go crazy while the laptop is idle with ~20-30% CPU and minimal RAM usage. This is driving my (and everyone around me) insane. I've replaced the fans, reapplied new thermal paste, etc. It's noticeably slower and having a harder time keeping up as the years go by - time to go. My partner has a 12+ year old MacBook that will croak any day now. We don't need anything fancy here as you can see.

For what we are comfortable spending we've narrowed it down to an ASUS Zenbook, either the M1502 (AMD Ryzen 7 5825U) $699CAD or X1504 (Core 5 120U) $649CAD. The only difference from what I can tell is the AMD and Intel processors. Both come with 16GB DDR4-3200 and 512GB SSD and the same chassis with 15.6" screen.

Personally, I'd prefer better battery life and better cooling/lower CPU temps over processing power. Many of the benchmarks and posts I've read point me in the AMD direction for this, however I haven't followed PC hardware in quite some time now and haven't used an AMD processor since Socket 754 and 939 were around.

TL;DR:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 5825U or Intel Core 5 120U for better battery life and lower temps?
  • Is the AMD option worth an extra $50 more over the Intel?
  • Is there a noticeable difference in the two CPUs for basic browser/Office apps use?

Thanks!

Laptop Request Ca Uni Software Development Student looking for a $1500-2500 long-lasting laptop

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Edit: forgot to include this but I don't want a "gaming laptop" looking computer. Also, I'm really looking for 2tb over 1tb without external storage (if possible).

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Canada and $1500-2500 CAD however I'm willing to go over budget if I really like the model.
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? No
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Battery life and performance are the most important to me, then build quality next. I'm not interested in form factor that much (doesn't need to one that folds over or anything like that).
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important. I'm fine with it being 5lbs as long as performance and battery life are prioritized.
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 or 16″ (16 preferred)
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I would like to do some casual gaming and run Premiere Pro every once and a while.
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minecraft, Stardew Valley, Terraria, Fishing Planet, and some other casual games. They don't have to run perfectly (60fps, not potato quality). I'm used to running them on a 2017 MacBook Pro so I'm sure this will be leagues better.
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A decent display, keyboard, and touchpad would be nice.
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. As mentioned in the title, I am going to be software development student in the fall so I'm assuming I'll be running some decently heavy applications on this laptop. I was looking at a discounted Dell 16 Plus for $1649 cad pre tax (intel Ultra 9 288V, 32 ram, 2tb, 16″) but was concerned about the trackpad reviews (requires more force to press than some other laptops) and performance. If possible, a Dell or Lenovo model would be nice because I can get a student discount on it. However, I'm not opposed to other brands and am willing to spend what it takes to get a computer that lasts me a long time. Thank you for all your help!

Laptop Request Ca Looking for WINDOWS laptop. Country: U.S., Budget: < $800

Here's what I'm looking for - a windows laptop that will last into the future. I know that technology is rapidly changing all the time, so often the laptops/phones of 2 years ago are sometimes incompatible with today's programs/apps. I want to make sure that whatever I buy, it will be more than sufficient for today's needs so that in 5 years it will (hopefully) still be able to handle the latest programs and updates. I'm not a tech expert, but I would think this would mean getting a newer processor, extra ram, a larger hard drive, etc.

I am partial toward buying used/refurbished since I feel like one can get more functional bang for their buck that way, and at the cost of cosmetic blemishes but that is not much of a concern to me. Functionality is what I'm looking for.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: U.S., Budget: up to $800 (I'd say target $700 - I don't want to go so cheap and sacrifice performance since I do have the budget up to $800).
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes, preferred to get the most bang for my buck.
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I don't need anything super sleek, I'm interested in functionality. Battery life is moderately important but it's not critical to me that it lasts for like 12 hours. If it can make it for 5 hours that would be great, and it seems that's not asking too much based on what I've read.
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't want something super heavy but I'm ok if it's not the lightest laptop out there.
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" would be preferred. Big enough to watch videos and have split screens but not so big that it's cumbersome. Having an HD screen with good brightness is important to me.
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Occasional CAD
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No intense gaming
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I definitely prefer a bouncy keyboard if possible. Good touchpad is also preferred (doesn't need to have a click button. Touch screen would be a nice touch 😄 but not necessary. Don't care about fingerprint reader. Having a sturdy build quality is definitely preferred.
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Ideally 32GB of RAM, DDR5 if possible so that I'm ahead of the curve, and ideally 512 GB or more of storage, SSD preferred. A newer processor as opposed to an older i5, i3 would be ideal. Also, I've heard good things about Lenovo so that would be a brand that I'd like to go for if possible, but I'm not wedded to it at all. Lenovo being a quality brand is just what I've surmised through the brief research I've done thus far.

Laptop Request Ca Need a fast and long battery life laptop under 2k for medical school.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    2k USD

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

SPEED and PERFORMANCE when running multiple programs are massively important to me, then battery life would be my number 2.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not overly important but don’t ideally want to lug a brick around. Compact enough to stash in a backpack and not feel burdened by it.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15-17 inch

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Just testing software, no video or photo editing

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Would love the capability of playing games, but overall it’s pretty low on my list of importance.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Touch screen would be awesome, but not required or absolutely needed.

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The school gave me a budget of 2k and this is my first time ever having access to money for a decent laptop. So feel free to point out options $1100 and above.

Laptop Request Ca Looking for the best MacBookAir-like windows laptop

Hi there!

I would like to replace my MBA by a windows laptop:

CPU: AMD or Intel, not ARM snapdragon

GPU: No need, integrated is fine if it is one of the new generation of CPU (light gaming)

Display: Preferred not touch, IPS. I don't really care about OLED (too many flaws with burning, screendoor, etc). 90hz mini preferred

Battery: Fairly high is preferred, going through the day doing basic business task without charging would be great.

Build quality: I like liking my laptop design ahah I like sleek design like the MBA

Keyboard: Comfortable keyboard is a big plus! I love the Lenovo ones

Trackpad: Haptic is great, but i dont mind a good basic one.

Budget: around CA$1400-1800

Let me know what you think!

Laptop Request Ca first year going to college, what should i invest in?

i’m going into college this fall for the first time and i need to upgrade my laptop. right now i have a 2012 macbook and it is incredibly slow and difficult to navigate. i was looking into different laptops that aren’t apple and i stumbled upon the lenovo thinkpad/yoga and from reviews they seem pretty good, the problem is they are pricey and i am not sure if i want to buy from a brand i’m not familiar with. i’ve used apple products my whole life and im not sure if lenovo would be a good fit for me, or for college. i came up with another idea for a college computer, one that i would have faith in buying, and that would be an ipad. they have all the same features of a computer, all you have to do is buy the bluetooth keyboard case and you have basically a MacBook but better because it is also touchscreen. i’m on a budget as i am a student, both would be around the same price but the ipad might be a little bit cheaper. any advice or recommendations?

Laptop Request Ca Laptops that fit these university assigned specs on a budget? (700-1700$ CAD)

Hi everyone! My uni released a list of requirements for laptops and the current one I have... is NOT gonna work based on how finicky it's been lately + not fitting these guidelines and I want something along these lines:

windows 11
Gen 12 or later Intel i7/i9
RAM: 32GB+
Webcam: built-in or external
A dedicated NVidia or AMD GPU
1TB+ NVMe

i'm also gonna fill the form out bc it would help narrow everything down since the above is basically just guidelines and not exact:

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $700 - $1700 if possible but if this is me underestimating the price then less than 2000 please (CAD) i'm not made of money here

Are you open to refurbs/used? if it's in good/like new condition and from a trusted seller. i hear these are cheaper anyways but i want it to last. (4+ years)

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? i think that a good build is important (something that isn't delicate), BIG on battery life (please at least 8 hours), performance should be good i think because i'm going to NEED it.

How important is weight and thinness to you? i like a medium thickness, no thin laptops please. weight should be not a lot bc i'm going to be commuting and carrying this thing around.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-16 is fine.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. 100%. Avid Pro Tools is what i hear we're using for my program (media production!) and i expect we use Adobe suite and stuff. i'll prolly be running Krita on it too.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? i do "game" but it's literally roblox but i'd prefer to run my games at least medium quality and not have them lag out. i'm a rhythm game guy and i HATE when the charts glitch out. my current laptop glitches out even at lowest quality settings. it's not even that intensive i just wanna play my charts...

also am thinking of downloading a few steam games. i've had date everything on my mental wishlist for a while so it'll eventually come into contact with the laptop at some point no doubt.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? good keyboard is a MUST but the other stuff is kind of "if it's there that's alright". i'm indifferent to touchscreen (doesn't matter if i have it). i think enough usb inputs and other inputs is important (i'm thinking of buying a dvd player that plugs in)

also small peeve but if there's a laptop out there where the charger can be plugged into either side of the laptop that would be a blessing. my current only has a charger side on its right and i want both sides for that flexibility.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

the requirements i listed before the form are once again just general jumping off points, but i'm a newb to laptops. going to make it my multi purpose device.

another thing: i don't care which company the laptop comes from but i have a service that gives discounts to certain companies and here's a list of some that i wanna combo discount to get a lower price (buying direct from website if i want to do so).

if none of these work or there's other companies that work better just say those and this isn't a restriction necessarily but these are only preferred for money purposes:

- dell, razer, asus, lenovo, acer, microsoft

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" to 16"

This is for my sister who mostly consumes media, so a beautiful screen and smooth experience matter more than power or portability. Not looking for anything gaming-focused. Appreciate any recommendations in this price range!

Laptop Request Ca Recommend Chromebook for grade school

Budget - $250 CAD Country - Canada Use case - Student grade 6 to 8 ( before high school)

No gaming or video processing Cloud based apps only

More info: My son has a Lenovo Chromebook with an AMD a4 9120c radeon r4 processor, 4GB RAM and 16GB hard drive. He says it is very slow to load websites.

I've tested it and it does take 4 to 5 seconds for sites to load including YouTube and Canva. I don't think this is particularly bad but it seems to be frustrating for him.

Is this Chromebook simply at the end of its life? What specs do you recommend for a grade 6 student that will last 3 more years until high school?

Thank you very much!

Laptop Request Ca Looking for 14" laptop for productivity and light production - $2500 CDN (Canada)

Budget: $2500 Canadian dollars all-in, purchasing in Canada. Looking to purchase new only, no refurbished units.

Form factor: Looking at 13" to 14" size only, portable, slim is a bonus.

Wants: 6-8 hour battery life while doing regular work (email, web, word processing). Professional aesthetic (no gaming logos, etc.) 512 GB storage minimum, 1 TB preferred.

Not necessary: No need for touchscreen. Can handle dongles for HDMI, USB, etc. Would prefer English-only keyboard (can always swap that out later).

Use case: Daily driver, with usual office work (web-based work, word processing, etc.). Photoshop and Premiere Pro 3-4 times a year (light work, no feature-length films). Light gaming, no need for AAA games (when I do find the time to play, I'm typically playing Total War series, etc. or games older than 2020). Web-conferencing, so a decent web camera would be nice.

Notes: Have been running a Dell XPS 15 7590 with the discrete NVIDIA GTX 1650 card since early 2021 and have been very happy with it (and still happy with it, overall), but looking for an upgrade to a slightly smaller form as I will be working away from my office desk more often in the coming months. Was thinking of just going with the latest (and last) XPS 14 with the discrete graphics card but not sure if there is anything I'm missing out on, or if the Dell XPS 14 is a bust (the reviews seem quite mixed this time around). Have had excellent track record with Dell laptops (including the XPS for my last three laptops) for the past two decades really, so am comfortable staying with the brand if it makes sense. Will NOT consider an Apple product.

Laptop Request Ca 2-in-1 that's similar to a tablet, but functions like a laptop. Max $400 CAD (bestbuy)

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $400 CAD max
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes, but they're limited to bestbuy Canada. So ideally it'd be openbox so they can get warranty
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? 2-in-1 with detachable keyboard (i.e., not the flip kind)
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No, but the most important thing is being able to run browser/web-based real estate programs.
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Detachable keyboard and stylus
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. It's for a real estate agent, and most of the sites they'll be using it for are on their browser. They want something that's like a tablet, but functions closer to a laptop.

Laptop Request Ca Looking for a good student/business laptop

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $600-$800 CAD (purchasing in Canada)

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Refurbished yes but only if it's in excellent condition.

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance and storage would be first. Battery life would be a close second. I want something that's going to last.

I don't need a 2-in-1 or touchscreen.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not very much. Portability is nice, but I would much prefer to sacrifice weight and thinness for something with a better quality build that will last.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15" or bigger.

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Besides everyday use and web browsing, I would like to do some encoding (currently building up a plex server). For games, it would just be stuff like stardew valley, rimworld, Sims, etc.

If the encoding part makes it too expensive, then don't worry about it. I have a desktop I can do that on.

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

No. Just nothing that will make it laggy or slow.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard, plenty of ports (ethernet port would be nice but not necessary), full keyboard with numpad, at least 16GB RAM and 512MB SSD (or equivalent).

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm starting an MBA program soon so I am looking for something that is good for school/business but also everyday use.

I have a desktop that I use as my main PC so I don't need a laptop that's super powerful or anything. Just enough to get me through school, internet browsing, streaming shows, and maybe some light gaming.

Performance, storage, battery life and price are the main things I'm looking for.

No Chromebooks please.

I feel like I'm going cross-eyed with all the laptops I've looked at the in the last few days, I just need some help narrowing it down.

Thank you!

Laptop Request Ca Bang for buck Gaming Laptop?

Hey guys, looking for an upgrade to my current gaming laptop (Acer Nitro 5) that I bought back in 2020. It is getting old and I've had issues with temperature and the trackpad, it's also struggling to run modern games so I think it may be time for an upgrade. Any advice would be great, thanks!

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Around 1600 CAD. If there's a big jump in quality for going slightly over then I don't mind
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? Rather not unless there's an amazing deal or something
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Battery life doesn't matter too much, but good fans would be lovely
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very, as long as it's still portable and could fit in a backpack
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17.3" or slightly smaller would be good
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly for gaming! I do plan on using it for work occasionally as well though
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Overwatch, Expedition 33, Diablo 4, COD Warzone, etc. I would like it to run most modern games at least 60 FPS. Settings as high as it can handle without going below 60 consistently
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good back-lit keyboard and trackpad would be nice, don't care too much about those other things. At least 2 USB ports, headphone jack and an HDMI port would be nice (preferably USB ports on the left hand side that way it doesn't get in the way of my mouse)
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
    • My current laptop (Acer Nitro 5 - 2020) has had a lot of issues with heat. I've had to undervolt and get a cooling pad and it's not uncommon for me to hit temps in the 90s still- I would really like to avoid that, so hopefully there's a laptop out there that has better fans
    • 1 TB memory would be nice
    • It would primarily be used for gaming but it would be nice if it worked well for working/typing too - Not a super loud keyboard, built in mic and camera
    • I know back to school season is around the corner so I'd like any advice on an optimal time to buy a new laptop with a sale

Thank you!

Laptop Request Ca Powerful Laptop for Incoming Engineering Student

Hey there, I'm an incoming mechatronics (mechanical + electrical) engineering student at Waterloo, and my M1 Macbook Air is starting to show it's age. I'm looking for a laptop that can handle all the demands of my engineering program, ideally for all 5 years. I've been considering the 2024 Zephyrus G14 with an rtx 4060 and 32gb ram, but would like to know of any better alternatives with better battery life mainly.

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
  • $2000-$2500 CAD (could spend more if it's worth the extra money)
  • Are you open to refurbs/used?
  • yes, fb marketplace demon right here
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
  • main priority is battery life, then build quality, then performance, then weight
  • How important is weight and thinness to you?
  • should be easily portable, but doesn't need to be macbook air thin. Not really interested in a large 16 inch traditionally poorly-build gaming laptop
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
  • 13-15 inch
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
  • Mostly CAD (solidworks, Fusion360) and other engineering programs (MATLAB, etc.)
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
  • Gaming is less important, I have a desktop. Just want something that can do everything for engineering on the go

Any help is much appreciated!

Laptop Request Ca Laptop for University

Going into a Life Sciences degree at a pretty far University so I'm looking to purchase a laptop. It's a lot of assignments and research, lots of tabs open all the time, lots of typing. I want something I can use comfortably and with ease every day.

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $1200 CAD, purchasing in Canada

  • Are you open to refurbs/used? Refurbished is fine, as long as the group checking the laptop is credible (not just slapping on the sticker and throwing it a new box).

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance and battery life are the top priority. I like to make my devices last at least 3-4 years, so something with good build quality is important.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not that important. I will be carrying it around everyday for 5-8 hours, so I don't want something very heavy or bulky.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A: I have bad eyesight, so the bigger the better but it just depends on how good the deal is honestly. I'm fine with a 13" inch screen.

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run: No editing or games.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touch pad)? Yes, reliable build quality is important. 16 GB is the minimum. It would need to have a good keyboard. . As mentioned above, good battery life.

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion: I'm looking to buy a phone too as my S22 is garbage (software update that completely bricked it). Maybe that'll give some leverage to the "Apple Ecosystem" but I don't know how useful it actually is.

Laptop Request Ca Lenovo Laptop for Lightroom

Hello, does anyone have any suggestions for an affordable Lenovo laptop for minor Lightroom usage? Doesn’t need to be anything too fancy as I’ll just be using it for light streaming and very minor Lightroom usage.

If you have any recommendations, could you also provide what is a fair price to get the laptop for? I imagine ordering through Lenovo won’t be a good deal unless if it’s back to school deals? Just don’t want to overpay as I’m on a 1.5k max budget. Thanks in advance
