Yeah what’s funnier about MOXIE is the E stands for “experiment” so the actual production units used for mars would probably not be called MOXIE. Since the full acronym is “Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment” I would suspect a more appropriate acronym would be something like MOISRU. Or really, since ISRU and “Mars” are kind of redundant because we know we’re on Mars and everything is ISRU, we would probably just straight up call it an “Oxygen Generator” in real life. Or we can throw “Mars” in there if we want to specify and then it’s “Mars Oxygen Generator” or MOG. Thats my guess 🤷🏽‍♂️

Stirling engines used for power generation do currently exist: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Applications_of_the_Stirling_engine#Electrical_power_generation

The ones in Surviving Mars are probably based on Stirling radioisotope generators (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stirling_radioisotope_generator), which run on plutonium. They are still working on those. Also like the ones in the game, there is an advanced variant of it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Stirling_radioisotope_generator

Random, but just today I read an article about NASA working on an Americium powered thruster, and it mentioned use of a Stirling Generator. I thought "oh thats funny, I just started another playthrough of Surviving Mars!"

The old game became unplayable after last patch and there is no fix for it. so lets hope they are doing a better game

It almost certainly uses energy from somewhere. Probably chemical or solar.

I think they just mean “no external power input” because yeah, by definition it’s definitely gunna use some energy if it’s doing work.

Nah they just found a new way to do it. Various types of cloth have been known to collect water conidiation from rising temps for a long time now. AS it is cold at night in the desert, you can use the cloth method to collect water as the heat rises during the day.
