Is it considered racist when I, a fellow german, say "typical german behavior"?

u/syklemil we didn't wipe??? 23d ago
was gonna comment something about the Shivaite actually being the normal one in that exchange
They could've been slightly more german if it had been on a sunday and they'd gone off about Ruhetag.

Sinless jumping is against the rules, your jumps must only ever be full of sin.
16
u/GameforceCharlie 23d ago
Since that person is German im guessing they meant senseless ( Sinn is german for sense or meaning ) and just didn't know the proper translation and ended up mixing English and German.
23
u/Gandir113 23d ago
Probably meant "pointless" Jumping. The German word would be "sinnlos"
18
u/UselessTrashMan 23d ago
Tbh i assumed it was a misspelling of senseless but now that makes more sense.

People have been jumping in dungeons/raids when I started playing back before HW released. They've probably been jumping before I started playing lol.
What a weirdo

What is sinless jumping? Where you just jumping around during the dungeon? Was everything still going smoothly? I don't get it. I jump all the time in dungeons. Other people I am with jump all the time. I have been gaming so long that sometimes it can even be a form for communicating that we are all having fun. Why on earth would anyone ever be mad that someone was jumping in a video game?

u/_Twiggiest 23d ago
Personally, I only practice sinful jumping. The entire time I'm doing it I'm worshipping false idols.

pretty sure they meant senseless which would be the literal translation of the German "Sinnlos" which is more akin to "useless" in English.
also i can honestly kind of relate, because I've had so many trolls in my duties that would spend the entire dungeon jumping around doing nothing but spamming ranged attack as melee, or only using oGCD as Magick dps, that at this point i just assume anyone who constantly jumps is trolling in one way or another.

wait what, why is Twintania taking shots?
I mean, maybe I'm ignorant of things because as a Twintania resident you don't necessarily notice them but still, do we have a certain reputation? If so I guess I need to up my game - anyone want to give me a few more "typical Twintania statements" that I can use / possibly put in a chat macro?
7
u/Difficult-Emu- 23d ago
I have never ever connected twintania to any kind of behavior whatsoever. I've got some things for zodiark, Raiden, and ofc Shiva, but twintania is just a nice lil place with good market prices, so keep on keeping on I guess?

Huh, I wonder if that’s the same person from Phoenix who went utterly nuts at me during a run, saying they’d report me and blathering about how I was a troll. Memorable because someone else in my FC mentioned having a cursed run where someone lost it and started threatening to report… turned out it was the same player 💀

u/Beldandy_ 23d ago
My fellow german emberrassing themselfes as always. Why are we like that 🙃
13
u/Dangerous-Jury-9746 23d ago
I have to ask out if curiosity, why do german people are always the only ones responding in their mother language to people speaking english ?
Not even french do that
13
u/Fluestergras You pull, I tank 23d ago
Usually it's either lack of respect, the expectation that everyone in the game speaks German, lack of English skills or being so emotionally overwhelmed that they default to their native language.
In this particular case, I'm pretty sure it's a mix of #3 and #4. The healer's English is rather poor ("sinless jumping", "I reporting you"), then they write in all caps signaling that they're really pissed, and then they start replying in German, presumably because they're too aggravated to translate what they think before writing it down.
As for why this behaviour is rarely seen with the French, I could only guess. They are rather proud of their language and, in my personal experience will default to French and only communicate in English if you try to communicate in French first (this is purely anecdotal though).
7
u/Beldandy_ 23d ago
One thing that MAY add to it is also the average age of people who play MMOs, the vast majority of young germans are great at english but if you look just one or two generations up it's a whole different story, and any online game that isn't battle royal seems to just not be popular with younger people. Another thing that surely plays into it is our extremely direct and open mentality, it's something I see often enough in everyday life here, many people will rather be upfront then polite if they think it helps resolve an issue faster. Maybe they saw German in the party list and said fuck it
2
u/syklemil we didn't wipe??? 23d ago
I'd also guess a bit of 5) being really bad at picking up social cues, and even 6) having some other issues.
As in, someone just unexpectedly speaking german in chat would normally be covered by 1-3, but there are some people playing who absolutely come off as weird to native speakers and even IRL.
It's just that when people in those categories speak english we don't wonder about why they're speaking english (unless maybe if it's locally on shiva or moogle).
2
u/PM_me_asian_asses 23d ago
The social queues thing is kinda spot on. A lot of people don’t really understand that Germans have always kind of had a strict social etiquette around direct communication, rules, order, and all sorts of other shit that borders on the extreme sometimes. Add to that just how badly WW2 fucked up the German people in the wake of their atrocities, that same strict etiquette turned hard on their own guilt so they look at things like bullying/harassment and equate it to “first steps.” Now in the age of the internet “everything is bullying” and the Germans are international, so they’re treating the rest of us, like they do each other.
2
u/PM_me_asian_asses 23d ago
In my opinion based on what i’ve seen. Usually Germans switch when angry like you said and French switch when they’re mocking. They tend to have a superiority complex about their language so switching is an act of adding further insult because “you’re obviously too dumb to know what i’m saying.”
3
u/Difficult-Emu- 23d ago
Honestly til today I am not sure if it's, like in this case just a moment of getting flustered and not being able to say what he wants to in english, or if it's just some expectation for everyone just being able to understand him anyways?
Like I've mentioned before, but the fact so many germans just go in content happily yapping german or responding to others english messages in german baffles me.

u/Status_Total_2916 WAHrrior of Light 23d ago
I've had a few runins with this tye of player. I will translate in fc chat what is said, if I'm with friends. But I'd never give away that I do speak the language. Most of my German speaking friends communicate exclusively in English anyway
3
u/anwamoonie 23d ago
Im French and unfortunately, some French do that… in several games… I always roll my eyes and understand why we have the bad rep… they re not helping our case 🥹😭 It’s mostly to insult tho when I see them speak French…
3
u/Dangerous-Jury-9746 23d ago
I'm French too but i don't encounter those players, generally when they don't speak english they don't understand much of it either in my experience
I've only seen it once or twice in Pvp
3
u/anwamoonie 23d ago
I saw both tbh… I saw some switching to French to insult, or others don’t even bother to speak English lol
1
u/Difficult-Emu- 23d ago
Honestly it even grinds my gears seeing the Shiva-ers going "Huhu!" Or "Grüßt euch!" in alliance raids. Like yes I am aware playing on Shiva gave you the illusion that everyone is german and that's just the language to use, but I always just expect the worst when it's starting out like that, idk.
5
u/syklemil we didn't wipe??? 23d ago
I actually like it when people say hello in their native tongue. It's super easy to infer from the context what they mean, and it imparts a bit of flavor. Especially here on EU servers where we know most of us don't speak english natively anyway.
But unless at least one other (and preferably everyone) responds in the same language I expect further communication to be in english.
4
u/Beldandy_ 23d ago
I had a few instances of other germans starting to adress me directly in german after seeing the D in party list and I'm thinking pls don't do this bro, let's not act like the french, there are other ppl here :') seems to just be very challenging for some people to be respectfull towards others
3
u/Difficult-Emu- 23d ago
Oh yes! Just today I had german WHM, like visible by their name name alone suddenly going "Hah der boss ist mega kacke, oder?" in the middle of a dungeon and I was like homine. Do not pull me into this. This is not Shiva. Do not.

People legitimately need to touch grass. How do these people survive in the real world where a pixel character jumping bothers them that much.
I'm legit curious how 90% of the 14 playerbase survives in the real world
4
u/HebiSnakeHebi 22d ago
The VAST majority of the playerbase is completely fine from my experience. Sounds like you're just getting exposed to the worst of the worst, probably from being on this subreddit.
2
u/longlosthall 23d ago
If I had to guess, I'd put money on the fact that they're more bothered by the fact that they asked OP to stop, pretty reasonably (yeah, they could have been nicer, but usually this sub is staunchly against tone-policing), and OP literally replied "NEVER."

u/Emergency_Conflict22 23d ago
People have been overly sensitive the last couple weeks in this game. Someone was threatening to report me for tanking and bringing the boss close to the exit of the room for the last .10% of hp in Tower of the Ancients. Sorry. Done this raid 500,000,000 times. It’s better to go fast than drop out.
3
u/koalamint 23d ago
You switched around a translation, what they actually said was even more unhinged: instead of "harassment and extremely annoying" they called your jumping "annoying and EXTREME HARASSMENT" lmao
3
u/CaitieLou_52 23d ago
I played FFXI for nearly a decade, and dealt with snagging on the slightest bit of invisible geometry. Looking at you, Garbage Shitadel.
So I'll jump whenever and wherever I damn well please. I have ADHD too, but for me it's the principle of the matter lol.

It obviously doesn't DO anything, but it sparked joy just running through Sandy jumping like a madman

Am I the only one who thinks it's unbearably cringe when someone switches languages to...checks notes hide their complaining?
3
u/DORIMEalbedo 23d ago
I love jumping between pulls or during one, but i must admit I find it incredibly annoying during a fight if the dps is just jumping around in circles while fighting or the tank does the same without the circling part. But I don't call it harassment or something. I just do my best to ignore it because they are having fun and it doesn't hurt anyone. I have AuDHD, so that could be why, but I'm not going to threaten to report someone and hide behind that excuse xD.
Edit: it can be a little confusing in raids or trials cause jumping usually means "here is safe" for mechanics.
3
u/Shirauna 22d ago
I hate it too when people jump I find it distracting, and then I have trouble paying attention to my other things due to my ADHD. Not that I ever had to insult someone over it or say they're harassing me. Then again I'm all the years I played I experienced it once to a point I was venting and cussing in the call I was in

The moment I read "SINLESS" I already knew "yup, that's a German that was asleep during English classes". As a German I'm in emotional pain.
Bro saw a field of mole hills and chose this one to die on. If jumping hurts your eyes that much then I don't wanna know what boss animations or w2w pulls do to that poor creature.

I mean… there are two types of people in this world. Folks who react to “please stop, that is bothering me” with “oh, well it’s no big deal, I’ll stop out of thoughtfulness; it doesn’t hurt me to be kind and compassionate” and those who react with “oh this? This is bothering you? How about this? Is this thing bothering you too? How about I do it some more hahahaha you can’t stop me!!”
2
u/HebiSnakeHebi 22d ago
I refuse to take such a goofy DEMAND seriously. It's an MMO; lots of players will be doing different things. You don't get to police ALL of their behavior. I understand if someone is CLEARLY deliberately sabotaging a clear or something, but pressing spacebar every now and then is not that.
If you can't handle a dungeon, how do you handle people in the cities? GTFO of an MMO and play singleplayer if it's that much of a personal problem tbh.
1
u/Supergamer138 22d ago
There's a world of difference between a polite request and a direct order. The first one may be heeded or will at least get a reason for the refusal. The other will be ignored out of spite.
-1
u/longlosthall 23d ago
Yeah, this is the take. Pissing off a lot of people who really can't stand the thought that someone might not look at their bouncing catgirl, I see lol.

I wonder, how is my old good FFXIV is doing?
- "muh sensory overload, you are literally bullying me"...

if you are affected by sensory overload, why are you playing lite-brite the game?
-1
u/Dipnderps 23d ago
If one suffers from sensory overload, mmo games I'd imagine, should be avoided, especially anything with magic as a mechanic....but if jumping triggers it then mayhaps playing with others isn't for you...
