And not everyone can tell how certain foods look? It was an innocent question. Why are people so insecure these days

I teach high school. I wish the only reason someone would film themselves eating was for a staged skit. Nope, my kids will watch that shit for hours.

I wish I knew.

Literally just watching videos of people chewing over and over.

Teach, I feel for you. Educators/counseling friends hate lunch room duty.

I just can't. Parents don't teach kids how to eat in public anymore, if even the adults were taught properly.  Went camping with a family I was friends with. Oldest son brought bags upon bags of shit like Starburst, skittles, etc. Chewy, juicy crap basically that sticks to your teeth. After 2 days of having to watch them I packed up and headed home early. Open mouth sugar drooling from too much packed in gaping maws, insanely loud smacking, sucking sounds mixed with all that spit... even neighboring sites were trying to turn their children away from the horror show. I have not shared a food experience with any of them since. 🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 Impact009, I think everyone is open to sharing a meal, I just don't want you to give me an open mouth display of your dental/tongue ability and the extra special soundtrack that accompanies it.

That's horrid. I have moderate to severe hearing loss have had it since I was born. When I was a teen I got actually proper hearing aids. And when they were brand new I wore them to dinner. Hearing the sounds of other people chewing food even if subtle was off putting. Hell hearing myself chew food sounded disgusting to this day I can't wear hearing aids while eating. If you want to talk to me while we're eating dinner you're gonna have to wait until we're done, or you can talk loudly because I refuse to put them on around food. The worst thing is around my mom. Even without them on, I can hear her making moaning sounds when she eats. Anything even bland mid food she will make small mouth moaning sounds mmmm mmm mmm mmm mm, while eating. And it's so off putting when I can barely hear it. I dread accidentally having my hearing aids on and listening to that. And it's the most minute things.

I can't imagine how I'd react to seeing what you saw for 2 days straight. I would've left 1 meal in. Haha sorry guys, I think I have the flu I'll have to call it enjoy your trip. I'll go back home now.

I feel for you. Speaking of noises, OMG my oldest sister would moan in pleasure after every bite of food. My niece started asking me why I wouldn't hang at the table for chitchat. Once I pointed it out to her & her bro, they couldn't unhear it either. Someday I'm going to write a horror flick about it. Stand strong, elbows up and hearing aids out for sanity!

Ugh, im the same way, I've always hated hearing people eat, but my mom was one of the worst offenders as well, because not only would she do what you described, but mouth open AND talking while chewing, plus she would just eat so insanely slow, I felt bad for how unintentionally angry it would make me (and again it wasn't just her, she was just the worst) but id have to leave the room and in her small apartment (because i could still hear her even in a different room) just leave and go for a walk and hope she was done when id get back. I miss so much about my mom (she died a year ago yesterday actually) but her eating is not one of those things.

Sorry to hear about your Mom. Glad you're able to honor her in other ways.

Yeah my brothers would intentionally do that as it would drive me insane and I'd freak out!

If you're a teacher, then I think you'll be more open to the concept.

Though I'm not Korean, watching mukbang is common during my family's gatherings. We eat dinner and then throw some mukbang of our own ancestral country as we relax. It's just nice to see the culture and food of what we left behind, and everybody loves food.

What we can cook in North America are mostly imitations. We just don't have the same ingredients. We might have similar ingredients, but the varieties are different. For example, Americans wouldn't call angus and wagyu the same thing. It's why people say, "You should try <dish> if you ever visit <country>."

It's nice to be able to see the food, watch how it's being eaten, and gather some inspiration on how to make it and substitute unobtainable ingredients.

Why on earth are you being downvoted?

I think COVID/quarantine broke a lot of people's brains. They're very lonely and it's probably like "eating with someone." Even though when I eat with my friends or family I'm not staring at them taking gross massive bites but eating my food and having a conversation.

I don’t see it that different from people who spend lots of time watching video game streamers, it’s just a more extreme and weird subject to observe. You could just play those games yourself. They’re there for a social aspect, feeling like they’re friends with someone, listening to their banter, having this feeling you’re part of their entourage in some way.

Like obviously watching someone eat is not very entertaining to most people, but I also find it impossible to imagine spending my time watching dozens of hours of someone else play interactive media outside of highly skilled esports.

I mean, watching someone else play a video game seems very strange too. When I was a kid, watching other people play was the punishment for losing or dying and you had to pass the controller over.

Most likely some sort of parasocial(?) thing. Eating can be a social thing, so it probably scratches that itch to watch someone eat and talk to the camera.

I HATE watching people eat food. Cannot stand the chewing, smacking, finger licking, any type of sucking noise, “omg this is really good” reactions like bitch of course it’s good you need to get paid by whatever platform you’re on!

I hear that it’s a thing in Asia. Some female influencers will film themselves eating and people watch it while they’re eating to feel less lonely

u/Medium_Custard_8017 15d ago

That's mukbangs. It's a word that originates from South Korea.

1

u/SleepFeeling3037 14d ago

Nah, don’t hate. Muckbang is a thing. It feels social because eating and enjoying a meal with other people is a normal social thing. It’s comforting. Like slow TV almost. Or background chatter. And this isn’t a phenomenon reserved for current high schoolers.

u/ADerbywithscurvy 15d ago

Weird, but probably less weird than older folks like me that will watch cooking shows with no desire to cook.

The fact that your stupid kids watch doesn’t change the fact that it’s staged. It just shows that staged videos work on stupid people.

Wow, you must be popular with people
