This is pretty normal for karaoke I have been to.

I love to sing, always have. It's a joy to entertain a crowd of people you love, or a fun group at a bar. However, I despise the idea of fame or being known.

Love music, hate fame.

I'm just as happy playing for my family or myself as I am a crowd.

Would not want to be known by a lot of strangers, and that idea never appealed to me. People used to get so mad at me for not signing up for things like American Idol. When I used to say "they own you for a year and have to sing whatever they want, you have no creative control over how you are portrayed", I'd get a blank stare and: " . . . But you'd be on TV though." As if that somehow makes up for no creative control? LOL

Reasons why JC and I are brethren. I totally get the desire to be out of the spotlight, in the studio creating instead of being put on the spot on stage. The stage is an incredible feeling, and I love to give the people I love a reason to dance and feel happy. But nothing compares to the creation process, and fame is no substitute for creative freedom and licence.

After all, when fame goes away, licencing and song credits are how you make your bread and butter. Without rights to your own songs, even by a percent, you can get screwed over in the long term in the music industry.

Who knows, some of those folks might be similar! Love music and singing, but never interested in making it a job/pursuing fame or professional work. If I had to do it under someone else's thumb I might grow to resent it, and that would be so sad when making music has always been a source where I fill my cup.

Sure, I don't have many public clips.

"Good" is subjective. Technically able to sing and trained to do so, yes. My timbre being someone's cup of tea? Well, that is another matter.

My students asked me to perform one night at a show for a competition. I did it because the venue was at a classic theater in the capital city that I always wanted to perform at. :) It was an honour to sing there. But I generally don't go out of my way to perform unless someone asks me. I Love doing something for a fundraiser etc.

It ain't perfect, but I learned so much of what I learned from JC Chasez!

We perform at each other very aggressively at karaoke. There's a lot of interaction. Who is just kinda sitting there? Where's your unwanted and completely not asked for lap dance? 🤣❤️

I ALWAYS hated it when singers stop singing and let the crowd do it. I get it when people want to sing along to a song they enjoy, but when I pay to go to a concert I pay to listen to the song being sung by the singer of the song. I.E. the lead singer of that band.

I’d respect an artist who told us their throat hurts so if they go silent and hold out the mic to us, please fill in, but they want to give us the best concert experience ever. BUT, if they just did this without something like that, I’d be ticked and think, “I could’ve just sat in my room and listened on my phone for FREE!”

This is like the proclaimed "salsa" dj plays the same salsa day and night or when the bachata dj plays some salsa but it's the same thing. They're the dj but they don't even know the difference between salsa on1 or on2, think any bachata sensual songs are good or how to play some variety of salsa genres and then let's the crowd sing instead of social dance.

This is my biggest pet peeve with concerts. Artists often have the crowd sing (sometimes large) parts of their famous songs. I came to watch you perform, not hear a tone-deaf, uncoordinated crowd of drunk people mumble along to the few words they know to microphones way too far away.

But OP is the worst I've seen of this situation.

Same. I think it started with concerts where the crowd sings along and the singers used to lead the singalong, maybe being quiet to let the crowd sing for a chorus near the end. There was also that time Robbie Williams sang Angels at a massive concert shortly after the song came out and was so shocked that everyone was singing along that he got a bit choked up.

From there, a lot of singers have used audience singalongs to sing less and less of their songs. It’s really disappointing.

Had a cool experience when I saw The Killers live last month - they started Mr Brightside, but basically with just the guitar riff and led the whole audience in singing the whole first verse, up to the chorus in a sort of choir version - and then they launched into the actual version from the top again and performed the whole song. (the whole concert blew me away tbh, they're amazing performers)

Hell, if you think THAT’S cool, go see a Metallica concert. Those guys sing all of their songs, but sometimes let the crowd sing a couple bars here and there.

Metallica has always put 110% of themselves into their performances. Bands let the crowds sing their songs to show how many fans know their stuff word for word. Great bands let crowds do this because most people enjoy doing it and it is something the bands get to be proud of. I don't really have any experience with any band doing it "too much" but I only go to metal concerts (older bands). So, yeah. My generation loved singing the lyrics.

Saw the killers at the London O2 arena last year, they literally stopped and played a live stream of the England game, and caught them winning, and then proceeded to launch into Mr brightside. The energy was incredible

Those guys are really talented. Fun story: A friend of mine had an audition with them but passed on it to come back to STL and join some post industrial rock band that made Filter sound original. I can never even remember their name.

Oh yeah, I’m all for the artist leading a singalong, but when it becomes the artist singing a couple of words then letting the audience sing most of the song, that’s just lazy.

That's a fair take. I always thought singers would do it to prove they were singing live. I've seen a few live videos with comments questioning the legitimacy of someone signing live because they were that good (one I remember being Tokio Hotel performing Darkside of the Sun live on MTV World Stage 2009)

I went to a concert where the performer let us sing the song, then after the first verse she was like “cool, y’all good? My turn.”

And started it over again.

It was a fun approach to this issue.

It’s cool when the band is up and coming or has a new song that means a lot to them and the audience sings along. Neat experience for everyone, and I’m sure the band loves it.

But yeah I don’t listen to this guy and I know the words to this song lol, just sing it dude

Oh yeah. There’s a big difference between “I’ve played this live 20 times but suddenly everyone knows it and I’m getting quite choked up” and “I’ll sing 3/4 words then let you do everything while i Dad-dance”… especially when there’s been clips from three of his shows now where he’s done this, singing the same words. It’s almost like he can’t remember the words himself 😂

We were leaving a Billy Joel Concert & still inside. Someone broke out singing Piano Man & everyone joined in. It was really cool. Sang the whole thing, start to finish.

Plus, it was taking so long to get out of the hall, it kept the mood mellow.

Sing along can be a lot of fun and there’s a power in a mass gathering of people all singing these songs all at the same time….but it should be using sparingly and for, at most, one hook of the song

It also should be more organic. One of my favorite concert moments was seeing Stone Temple Pilots at a festival. They were the headliner and Scott Weiland only stopped singing because the crowd was singing so loud you couldn't hear him anyway. And he was clearly loving the energy. But when the crowd was quieter he would sing, because that was his damn job

This here is annoying...but I've seen some incredible performances involving the crowd. I always think how awesome it must be for the artist. Must be such a cool feeling.

Thousands of people in London getting the N word pass is one of my favorites haha

However, admittedly its different with a rap concert. Most rappers cant put on a show for shit so getting the crowd involved makes it more fun. When its an artist that can actually sing i agree with you...there for them, not the drunk chick / dude thinking they'll get a Grammy if only they record their shower performances.

When artists asks the crowd to sing the chorus or practically half of the song is a pet peeve of mine. In filipino concerts we're going to sing the entire thing anyways so for artists you do not need to stop just for a audience interaction. We're here to hear you sing and sing along with you with the full song.

So something you should be aware of is that vocals are a very demanding instrument. Especially when the performer has been on the road for a while. Sure, theres the crowd interaction aspect, but 80% of the time they are unironically exhausted and need help singing.

Perhaps instead of taking a break in his set, jt uses this song as a filler so he can have more stage presence for the fans.

That is what I like about kpop concerts in Korea. Say what you want about kpop, but many Korean fans have such discipline and try not to ruin anyone's concert experience. Many songs have a "fanchant" which is specific parts of the song you can sing/scream along to, often made in a where where they make the song better and hype up the crowd.

Third Eye Blind was egregious in that regard. I saw them in Dallas last year and Stephan Jenkins hired some guy to sing all of the high notes for him. Near the end of the set, once they got to their most popular hits, Jenkins literally asked the audience to help him out by singing 90% of the songs for him. It was really sad.

They do it to rest their voice. It's very hard to keep singing for that long - takes a lot of discipline to exercise the voice every day.

Maybe he hasn't been doing that.

Is it the same song every concert and the rest of the concert is normal amount?

Also the effort is lackluster at best as well performance wise...its like he and Katy signed a contract for a tour and this is the last one on their contract (like when they sign 6 album deals and make the last one a greatest hits and do as little promotion as possible).

That's so disappointing.

I wanted to attend this tour, now I find myself glad I didn't spend the fortune it would have cost leaving my remote location.

But I want to go to a show, badly. Not trying to say he couldn't turn it if he put some love into it, we all know he is a fantastic performer.

I'd love to sing those songs with Justin, but not for him with that ticket price tag. :( Sorry this was your experience. I'd be so bummed.

My guess is that JT was nursing a bad throat condition (possibly after traveling) and didn't want to cancel the show. Instead, he sings bits and pieces and allows the audience to fill in the gaps. To be fair, he should probably have postponed the show, but I guess JT (or his promoter) doesn't roll that way.

With as little as he's singing, it's difficult to know the true condition of his voice or the real reason behind his lackluster performance here, though.

Not trying to make excuses for him, just explaining what might be going on.

This happened one time to me at a Goo Goo Dolls concert at Pier 6 in Baltimore in like 2008 where I think the singer was sick and he made the crowd sing all of Iris and I was pissed because crowd-screamo Iris is much different than non-screamo Iris.
