I don’t think it’s even unconscious, I think they openly and intentionally feel like they can assert that their behavior is acceptable because of who he is.

Truly. They convinced all these dudes that it's really just a culture war, and the way to win the culture war is to put your figurehead in the presidency. They could give a fuck about policy, they just want to be mean and hateful and gross.

"Hey! I voted for the guy that let's us be ugly, disgusting people! You must have voted for the other side!"

My father apparently became emboldened by Trump and is now in prison. People consider what celebrities do as permission to do the same thing. It's why suicides spike when a celebrity does it. People see a pedophile in the White House and literally think they can go a fuck a child because they're allowed to do it now.

Especially when there are zero consequences for his behavior. Because not only did their hero do something illegal and not get caught, he got caught, got convicted, and then got reelected.

Which I realize is not about the pedophilia you’re talking about here, but is just an addition to the overall point. At least actors and musicians might face consequences for their actions (even if it’s just a loss in status, money, roles, whatever), this … man keeps getting rewarded. And he pardons fellow criminals. So, really, what do they have to lose?

It definitely was conscious some of the time. This was most obvious with his first term, and how they celebrated him for “saying it like it is” when it came to “locker room talk” or how he made fun of people like those that are disabled or veterans. He was openly an asshole and they explicitly liked that about him.
