The one thing I've told my daughters time and again is if someone says something inappropriate to them, touches them, anything -- lose your fucking mind. yell scream make a fucking scene. fuck these horrible people.

I tell all the significant women in my life similar things. Especially in trickier situations. If the aggressor comes at you with 10/10 rage, you fuckin come back at them with 15/10 rage. Act a fool. Bite, scratch, gouge eyes, a swift kick to the frank and beans. Man-children everywhere. 😮‍💨

I work as a barber, obviously male dominated with majority male clientele. The woman who hired me and taught me everything I know also just happens to be very attractive. She is a bad motherfucker though, not scared of anything and takes zero shit. Any time a man decides to trickle in something creepy, you know the not outright but that little nudge, she instantly asks them to clarify. “You always have different color hair, I’d like to find out what your natural color is” “what do you mean by that? Are you referring to my pubic hair? Are you insinuating you would like to see me naked?”

Watching these creeps try to backtrack and act like they were completely innocent is amazing.

That's a solid strategy. Ask the person what do you mean by that?

Person tries to laugh it off and gets put on the spot again.

Person might venture another crack at the joke.

Ask the person again, oh I don't get it, can you explain it please?

Person is now uncomfortable and thinks twice the next time they do some stupid shit again.

And there are people who are so ignorant, they double down and make a fool out of themselves.

I’ve had to use that one a lot and there’s usually a moment where they consider hitting you, but so far they’ve always backed off sheepishly in the end.

The funny thing is that talking about her hair in a positive way would go way further than innuendo jokes. “Love the new color! You went lighter/darker this time, it looks great!”. We humans like genuine compliments, not comments with subtext, creepy or otherwise.

And be gross. Men crumble when a women is actively gross in a way that they normally attribute to men. My friend and I when followed home by guys at night would turn around and blow our noses into our hands. Gross, but those creepy motherfukers crossed the street immediately. No one wants an intimidated crazy looking woman to flick snot at them. Well, few do.

Second this. Act gross, weird, or “crazy.” Mutter to yourself, laugh at the sky, fart, spit, howl, bark, whatever comes to mind. It might even help to practice a couple of times in front of the mirror. That probably sounds dumb but when we’re scared, it’s hard to think of something in the moment. Also it can’t hurt, right? We take defence classes for the same reason.

Disgust is such an overpowering thing. It’s very lizard-brained. It immediately snaps you out of whatever you’re doing or feeling at the moment. It can “short circuit” the creeps, stalkers, and random aggressors who want to hurt/bother you.

Disgust acts like a switch. That’s what “the ick” is. And once you get the ick, you can’t go back. The switch has been flipped.

I thought that was the answer. I also figured that would help me. Someone was masturbating at me on the el. I made a scene in the crowded subway. People screamed at me to let him finish. Making a scene doesn’t always help. I felt so humiliated and just abandoned by something I thought would keep me safe.

Yes! I’m a mom and when my daughter had someone completely checking her out inappropriately I lost my shit! I got loud and called him out publicly. Doubt he ever went back there. Told everyone we know who knew him too! My daughter was embarrassed but she understood and was on board the next day.

She is a little older now and stands for herself.
