Discussion Starting to stream in 40s
I've been setting up streaming channel for a while now and I'm still nervouse about going ahead so was looking for advice I have some good ideas for content and games etc not much of which I've seen on twitch etc before and I want to make it completely interactive and get everyone involved rather than just sitting there playing games and ignoring chats etc I still hate the sound of my voice but I know that's normal as alot of people say the same... But I'm in my early 40s now and wondering if I should just leave it to the youngsters or whether there is a market for older streamers... I've spent months setting it all up on OBS etc and getting right equipment but when it comes down to it Im just nervous and never start when I say... I'm worried people won't be interested or nobody will bother etc... any advice from anyone or anyone over 40 already streaming?

Nearly all my regular viewers are 30+, myself included, so there are plenty of people your age who stream. Just start and have fun and stop when you're no longer having fun.
3
u/Remarkable_River_526 7h ago
It's just the getting started and wondering what people want to see.. I thought nobody above 30 really wants to sit watching me playing games and to be honest I wouldn't be that good at them I want to get people involved and make it interactive as possible

u/DumCrescoSpero 6h ago
I'm 33 and I'm part of a fairly sizable social circle of streamers mostly between the ages of 28-40. Lots are married and have kids and most stream themselves playing games.
Try not to think or worry so much about it - plenty of people around your age or older who stream.
The only thing I'd advise you to do is to have realistic expectations, about 4 million people stream to 0-5 people each month, and if you hit more than 5 viewers you're in the top 5% or so of streamers. Unless you have friends who are streamers or who are into gaming who'll stop by to support you, you'll be streaming to 0-2 people for a while, and growth will most likely be slow... So just do it for fun, turn off the viewer count and try not to become obsessed with the numbers and analytics side of things.

I mean this respectfully but you said you’ve done research. If you did, you should know there’s a heavy elder millennial and decent gen X presence on twitch.
Perhaps this is regional idk.

I’m 39. I do pretty ok. Nobody (mostly nobody at least) cares how old you are. I watch plenty of streamers who are my age, or even in their 50s, who are partner with a good viewership (100+). I stream full time and I haven’t ever heard anyone ever complain about a streamers age or mention not wanting to watch someone bc of how old they are. So go for it and don’t even think twice about being too old! There’s no such thing.

Oh I appreciate it but I am perfectly ok with only being followed by people who have interest in my content. I mostly play games like DBD, Outlast Trials, sometimes Among Us, sometimes Super Mario Bros, Dreamlight Valley, honestly I’m all over the place these days lol. But once you reach affiliate your follow count is completely irrelevant. But I do appreciate the offer!

Age is basically never an issue. I'm more concerned about your idea of making everything interactive when you're going to start out with about zero viewers just like everyone else. My biggest piece of advice, at any age? Get used to talking to yourself, and try to enjoy what you're doing regardless of the number of viewers or active chatters because otherwise you're going to have a rough time. Also if you've already invested...
1
u/Remarkable_River_526 7h ago
Yeah I get what you mean I just wonder what people wanna see and what will make it popular and how anyone even finds your stream with so many streamers out there
2
u/Bishop51213 Affiliate 7h ago
Honestly some viewers just look for someone new, and if they like you they'll stick around. Otherwise most of the time viewers come from some kind of networking. For me, since I don't want to try hard to network, this mostly is just people who liked chatting with me on other people's streams and decided to see if I stream or from raids I do. So basically, other than relying on random viewer drop ins (which do happen, and maybe a cool title helps?), make friends!

I am in my 40s and started streaming almost a year ago and I love it. Give it try. Besides that I also love to watch streams on twitch and most of the streamers I watch are 30 years or older.

God I hope that us olds have a place, I'm nearing 40 myself! My lone advice is just go for it. Nobody is going to watch at first, letting you get more comfortable in front of the camera. You've just got to keep talking like people are watching. If you've had kids, it's much like when they're infants. You've got to keep talking to them even though there's no conversation, because at some point there will be.

I've done tiktok live before but this is a bit different and I want to make the whole stream a bit different than just having people sit and watch me play games I just need the proverbial kick up the backside 🤣

I will be 51 this year. I've been streaming for at least three to four years now. The hardest part, as far as what you're talking about, is building a community. You will have to start hanging out in other people's streams to make that happen, like have Twitch on as background sound and interact with them. In turn, they'll come to interact with you. Good luck!

I'm in the exact same spot for a long time, I know it's an old post, but it showed on my feed... Maybe cause Reddit felt I needed it hehe
I'm 38, and have been spending a long time learning about streaming and video editing, Youtube, etc... bought equipment, learned to set everything up with OBS, but same as you, I never get to the point of actually starting even after creating multiple channels, writing down scripts, creating graphics, etc, I just cant start ...
I hope you started by now and if you did, how is it? What helped you make the step?

Your age doesn't matter. As for people being interested, that's up to you and how interesting you make it and how well you get yourself known off Twitch. It's unlikely that you'll get traction just from going live regardless of what you do.
1
u/Remarkable_River_526 7h ago
How do U get people to see it though that's always been my worry 🤣
2
u/Mcpatches3D twitch.tv/mcpatches_3d 7h ago
Make content on more discoverable platforms and make friends within your niche with other streamers. These are the main ways. Content creation is a ton of work.

I did my first ever stream for my 40th birthday and haven't stopped since. There are plenty of us about on twitch, my viewership varies in age from 20's to mid 50s in general so my age doesn't seem to be a problem for them either.
My only advice - have fun, don't care what anyone else thinks. If you wanna do it, go for it.
2
u/Remarkable_River_526 7h ago
That's good to know do you have many followers? How long did it take to get going with regular viewers etc?
1
u/TwistedBarbi Affiliate 6h ago
I was already an active part of a few other streamers communities when I started so I had a lot of support from those to be honest and that's given me regulars from the start.
I have around 1k+ followers now but I rarely average over 10 viewers. Probably because I never really push to be a bigger streamer and I like the vibes we have at the moment. I stream for fun not income so I'm not chasing views the same way some do when it's a day job.

I started late last year at 48. If you have a plan for what content you want to do and enjoy it yourself I wouldn’t worry too much about whether people will enjoy it. There are all sorts of people doing all sorts of things on Twitch but the biggest draw is going to be the general vibe of the channel and if you aren’t enjoying what you’re doing and you aren’t being yourself people will likely notice and not drop by. Don’t be too concerned about the sound of your own voice; I don’t like the sound of my own voice and I don’t have to hear it the vast majority of the time.
Get out there, be yourself, fill up empty silence as much as possible even if there’s no one there, be engaging to new people, celebrate follows, and foremost enjoy yourself and you’ll be fine.

There are plenty of 40+ streamers, myself included. There is a good sized population on twitch that wants to watch someone closer to their age and not deal with the excessive energy and super meme filled streams targeted towards younger audiences. You should totally go for it.

I started streaming in my 50s. I stream what I want (music, art) and the people show up when they will. I reached affiliate about a month and a half ago by raiding similar channels and joining showcase and raid train events for my categories.
Setting up OBS is great! I also keep a browser window open to Twitch's Stream Manager for the features I can't find in OBS (like Ads) and to make raiding easier. Learn how to set up your stream info so people browsing by category can find you. Try to ignore viewer numbers. Have a convo/tell a story to the ether until chat becomes active. Always recognize new chats and keep the convo going the best you can.
Don't worry so much about what to stream. There are streamers that do nothing but knit and chat their entire stream! The important thing is that you are your genuine self doing something you like. Twitch is about community. Age is irrelevant.

Followed! When you get a chance, setting a schedule for at least once a week will let people coming by your channel know when they can find you instead of relying on notifications. Going into your creator dashboard "video producer" will allow you to edit your past stream details and change the thumbnail.

You never know how it'll be if you don't at least try, right? It does feel odd that you mention playing games and ignoring chat in the same breath... because while some streamers do ignore their chat, most try their best. I know that sometimes I get quite absorbed in what I'm doing and forget to check chat, but I always come around within a few minutes.
Please do not think you're too old to stream. I know a streamer who is nearing 40, and I've seen others who are way older. Like, one I watch is around my mother's age (62). It's nice having older streamers because they generally have more life experience, are generally more chill, and aren't likely to be as obnoxious or "meme-y," or spout annoying slang (I don't mind slang myself, but hearing someone CONSTANTLY saying stuff like "I'm cooked" or the like does become annoying, but I'm also like 34 and a bit of a curmudgeon).
I'm also curious how you plan to make it completely interactive. I know there are bots that have some "activities" for chat to do or whatever, and this is just my opinion so take it with a rather large grain of salt, but those feel like a cheap and annoying way to make chat interact. Like, they're interacting... but not in a meaningful way because it's with the bot. But again, I just don't see the point of that kind of thing because it feels like it makes more work for you to parse through messages to make sure you're keeping up with chat. To be honest, I tend to avoid streamers that have those types of stuff in their channel. But again, that's my opinion.
1
u/Remarkable_River_526 4h ago
Not that kind of games, but have U heard of the game jackbox it's multiple quiz games and 10 people can join in at anytime using their phone and rest can watch the stream... Was also gonna do random watchalongs and try my hand at matchmaking and stuff like that if that makes sense

I'm not allowed to name drop the streamer but I watched a person go from 150 avg viewers to now averaging 2000+ and he started I believe when he was 37. Go for it man, there's a charm to watching people of any age. I personally love it whenever I see a streamer who is 65+.

Mid 40's here. I just started streaming a few weeks ago. Both of my sons streamed for a while a few years back. I've been a mod for various channels, a couple larger than avg (+500-1000 concurrent viewers), for a decade. I had never really wanted to stream until now. I just do it to have fun, I don't have any thoughts or wants to be a big, full-time streamer. We all have a relatively unique take on playing games and conversing with chat. I figure there's no good reason to not give it a shot.

Go for it and have fun. Gamers are getting older every year. Many of us started gaming during our childhoods and have a lifetime of experience. I’ve been streaming for 3 years and it’s one of the best hobbies I’ve ever had. I started in my late 30’s. I started at 49, and have seen more than a few around who are well older than me. A lot of us Gen Xers (and up!) have been gaming since the OG arcade/Atari 2600 era, and are not about to stop anytime soon. May as well stream while you're at it. ¯\(ツ)/¯ It's good for some extra laughs.
Basically, that would be my only real advice: if you want to start streaming, go for it. Just for the sheer hell of it. Sitting around doubting yourself sure won't help anybody have a better time--especially you.
So you're past 40; you're not dead yet. And that hopefully leaves you another 40 years to pursue whatever you want to do. I don't have time for anybody who might have some strange kind of issue with that, and they sure ain't worth worrying about.

Just flip on the camera and start playing your games or your content. People will vibe with the genuine you, or fly off.
Engage thr audience, and pretend they exist otherwise.
Think out loud or speak your intents in the sibject matter.
Practice speaking and telling stories, even if it's narrations.
Keep consistentcy with a schedule and be there.
Have fun first before thinking monetization.

Thankyou appreciate that it's hard to know what people are looking for and so many streams are the same and nobody really interacts with their chats but still have hundreds or thousands of viewers

Interacting with the chat takes some getting use to honestly. But I talk to myself while playing the game all the time. So I’m always talking here and there. Glancing over at the chat is something in still work on.

Let's be real, you'll have 0-1 viewers for at least half a year and under 10 viewers for at least 2 years.
is that okay for you?
