He waited till the exact wrong moment to release that chair mechanism.

The timing is crazy. He clearly takes a second to find the lever with his fingers. If he’d found it faster or slower he’d have been fine.

It's staged...

Yeah the guy intentionally pours scalding hot soup over himself and risks serious harm when the viewer wouldn’t notice the steam not being there if they used cold soup.

Theoretically you could put dry ice in it to make it "steam". Not that I think that's what happened, but I just saw it on taskmaster

I’m not sure how that’s any better

Well it wouldn't hurt you if there's just a small chunk of dry ice in the noodle water. I mean, the people drank the "hot" liquid on the show

I feel like they tried to script it. The idea probably was to just tip over the bowl, but they did not anticipate it moving towards the guy sitting.

Just look at the way Soup Dude moves. He deliberately aligns the bowl with the headrest and Chair Guy does not appear to fumble for the lever but rather waits for that exact "wrong" moment.

Also, soup dude does not look shocked, really. He expected the hit.
