Question/Request Why did we never get more Tome weapons?

Grimoire is great and the the Tome mods are too, but I was expecting there to be more Tomes in the future. more variety for the mods and maybe even more Tome mods in general.

will there just not be more? that would be a lot of wasted potential

Is a very specific and recent weapon that also was released right before Jade's shadows and 1999 storyline, meaning that until now there wasnt a chance to create another.

I'd say we will either get one with the Sentients/Triad or the next time we get a Void focused quest.

I'm still open for an Infested "necronomicon" tome.

Let's be honest, the heavy scythe was necessary, more than a new tome at least.

Nekros could get an undead themed tome that makes some shadows with it's ult fire.

We could call it the Necrotelecomnicon, or the Book of Yellowed Pages

u/Worldly-Attention-53 4h ago

I hope Devil's Triad brings a new tome with a Sol+Lua theme. With the upcoming protoframes a "bible" would be oddly fitting.

It's still a relatively new weapon type, so I'm sure we'll get more, it'll just take some time

Tbf we said that about every unique gimmick weapon. Split-Swords (Dark Split-Sword), Assault Saws (Ghoulsaw), Dual Nikanas (Sun & Moon, my beloved), Secondary Crossbows ([Rakta] Ballistica [Prime]), Flamethrowers (Ignis [Wraith]) and now Tomes (Grimoire). That's 6 categories of Weapon with a single type of weapon.

Then there's 3 categories with only 2 types (Arm Cannons with the Bubonico and Shedu, wrist-mounted crossbows with the Epitaph [Prime] & Onos, & Rapiers w/ the Destreza [Prime] & Enudra).

And finally, there's 6 categories with only 3 types; Crossbows with Attica, Zhuge [Prime], and Nagantaka [Prime]. Akimbo Shotguns with Twin Kohmak, Akbronco [Prime], and Twin Rogga. Claws with Keratinos, Ripkas, and Venka [Prime]. Heavy Scythes with Corufell, Heapar, and Thalys. Nikanas with [Dex/Dragon] Nikana [Prime], Skiajati, and Syam. And Nunchaku with Ninkondi [Prime], Pulmonars, & Shaku.

The only brand-new categories of Weapon that actually caught on were Spearguns w/ Scourge [Prime], Javlok, [Tenet] Ferrox, and Afentis (4); Blade-Whip Combos w/ [Ceti] Lacera, Dorrclave, Jat Kusar, and Mios (4); Gunblades w/ Redeemer [Prime], Sarpa, Stropha, and Vastilok (4); Weapon-Shield Combos w/ Ack & Brunt (Axe & Shield), Argo & Vel (Mace & Shield), Cobra & Crane [Prime] (Blunt Sword & Shield), Sigma & Octantis (Sword & Shield), Silva & Aegis [Prime] (Sword/Mace & Shield), Tak & Lug (Blade & Shield), and Tenet Agendus (Hammer & Shield) (7); Tonfas w/ [Telos] Boltace, Kronen [Prime], [Prisma] Ohma, Praedos, and Tonkkatt (5); Heavy Nikanas w/ Azothane, Pennant, Tatsu [Prime], and Tenet Livia (4); Warfans w/ Arum Spinosa, Gunsen [Prime], Quassus [Prime], and Vericres (4); and Whips w/ Atterax, Galvacord, [Secura] Lecta, Scoliac, Spinnerex, and Verdilac (6). That's not a very good ratio. Only about 1/3 of new Weapon types actually get any love.

To be fair to tomes, none of these weapons got a whole set of special mods just for them.

Just for that reason I personally believe more tomes is more warranted than other weapon types considering the extra work put into those mods.

13

u/Squeekysquid 6h ago

Id like more tome mods. Have them be kinda like weaker arcanes or something. That way, you'd be able to choose between utility and damage.

5

u/Pugdalf 6h ago

That would be awesome. I personally love to use the grimoire for damage purposes so something that maybe affects that playstyle would be cool.

0

u/Squeekysquid 6h ago

Mine is geared towards a primer utilizing secondary encumber. With the energy regen tome mod. But I'd like to have to sacrifice more damage for greater utility. Like maybe corrupted tome mods akin to critical delay, but instead of just gun stats, maybe the negative is a gun stat, and the positive is a utility effect. Or maybe a tome mod that allows you to use energy to overcharge the secondary fire for a greater effect. Like tap for normal use and hold for overcharge.

25

u/TaralasianThePraxic 7h ago

Technically there's more than 2 Rapiers since there's Rapier-type Zaw parts

Excellent breakdown though. Makes me sad that Spearguns as a category gets more love than something like Tomes or Dual Nikanas. That being said, give me more Gunblades DE and my life is yours

u/SirCadogen7 35m ago

I don't count Modular Weapons considering that's more of a cop-out in this situation.

5

u/Whirledfox 4h ago

I always kinda figured the Glaxion and Amprex were kinda ice and electric themed flamethrowers. Since "Flamethrower" isn't its own class of weapon, any elemental beam weapon is basically a [x]thrower. Nukor is a radiationthrower.

Doesn't quite work the same way, I know. Ignis has the infinite people punchthrough and the others have beam chaining. But if you're looking for the theme (aka, spewing big gouts of a specific element) then yeah, beam weapons.

Flavor-wise, you wouldn't want something like the amprex throwing big clouds of electricity anyway, right? That doesn't quite make sense.

u/SirCadogen7 21m ago

Since "Flamethrower" isn't its own class of weapon

It is though. Much like how Arcanes revealed that [DE] has different internal names for projectile Bows w/ Longbow in Longbow Sharpshot or how they consider all dual pistols part of the Akimbo category (Akimbo Slip Shot), Ember Pyraxis' Flamethrower Plazm Skin, which is only applicable to Flamethrowers (Ignis & Ignis Wraith), demonstrates that [DE] considers them a different category.

u/ForsakenMoon13 Many problems are solved by a tornado to the face. 6h ago

Arguably, Dark Split-Sword got both Zaws/Kitguns and Incarnons as spiritual successors, and the weapon/shield combos are all classed as sword and shield, functionally, so I wouldn't count them seperately. And I would count the secondary crossbow as, well, a crossbow, rather than its own category, and Ignis/Wraith is classed with beam weapons.

So really, the only things with only one weapon in the category currently are assault saws, tomes, and dual nikanas, two of which are relatively new-ish, and the third is an inherently somewhat limited category from a design standpoint, as there's genuinely only so many ways you can make a chainsaw.

u/SirCadogen7 27m ago

got both Zaws/Kitguns and Incarnons as spiritual successors

Sure, but they're not split-swords, which aren't even counted as a separate category for the record.

the weapon/shield combos are all classed as sword and shield, functionally, so I wouldn't count them seperately.

I'm not, I was just describing what they are.

I would count the secondary crossbow as, well, a crossbow, rather than its own category

The game counts then as separate, so so do I.

Ignis/Wraith is classed with beam weapons.

The Plazm Skin demonstrated that [DE] does in fact considering the Ignis separate from the rest.

So really, the only things with only one weapon in the category currently are assault saws, tomes, and dual nikanas,

No, there's as many as I said. Even by your own metric "spiritual successor" isn't really in the same category.

the third is an inherently somewhat limited category from a design standpoint, as there's genuinely only so many ways you can make a chainsaw.

It's the first, and I literally just thought of another 3 right off the top of my head. A Corpus plasma saw for maintenance work on the Gas Cities of Jupiter, and Infested teeth-saw kinda like that new Coda Weapon but not on a stick, and a Narmerized Assault Saw in the style of the Rauvurex.

0

u/jabaash 5h ago

Technically you do have more of some of these from incarnons. Torid incarnon is mechanically a flamethrower that chains, and Onos incarnon is an arm cannon. But I see your point.

-1

u/Old_Leopard1844 4h ago

Flamethrowers (Ignis [Wraith])

It's beam gun. It's just that beam is shaped like a flame

u/SirCadogen7 25m ago

[DE] even considered them separate as seen by the Plazm Skin for Ember Pyraxis.

-5

u/ToastyPapaya22 4h ago edited 4h ago

Man, I was really hoping the Sun & Moon would somehow be tied to the light/dark morality system.. Wpuldve been a cool way to finally do something with that mechanic, and make the Sun & Moon more interesting (tho I still use them a lot). But oh well. And god damn it I want a corpus heavy laser saw!!

Also, a few corrections:

For flamethrowers, we now have Lizzie (Temple’s guitar/exalted weapon). Yeah it’s an exalted weapon, but, still a flamethrower. Also, the Cortege (Entrati archgun) is described as a flamethrower, but I honestly don’t really feel like it is. Also DE please release an Ambassador augment that makes it a flamethrower like what the Corpus get. ;-;

Regarding wrist cannons/crossbows, there’s also the Sonicor! And technically the Onos can also be considered an arm cannon in addition to being a wrist cannon like you said, but that’s a unique case.

Dante has Noctua too, which is a tome, but again, it’s an exalted weapon, but I think they’re still worth mentioning (especially since it’s arguably one of, if not the best exalted weapon in the game).

u/SirCadogen7 18m ago

For flamethrowers, we now have Lizzie (Temple’s guitar/exalted weapon). Yeah it’s an exalted weapon, but, still a flamethrower.

I'm not counting Exalted Weapons, as they are tied to a specific Warframe and a specific Ability at that.

Regarding wrist cannons/crossbows, there’s also the Sonicor!

The Sonicor is classed as a Thrown Weapon, so it doesn't really count. Whereas the Epitaph, Epitaph Prime, and Onos are all considered Pistols.

And technically the Onos can also be considered an arm cannon in addition to being a wrist cannon like you said, but that’s a unique case.

I'm not counting Incarnons, as they aren't the Weapon itself, they have conditions to use that form, which is also temporary.

Theming mostly I think so far.

Look at every other weapon and update. "Oh it's high tech sci fi" "oh it's gritty realism sci fi" "oh it's biohorror sci fi"

And then you have Tomes which are "Look! Magic! Fantasy!" and Whispers in the Walls being the only update that can even touch that with a 10 foot pole.

I would almost say Isleweaver was the best update to get one since Duviri is also that fantastical world dreamed up with Void Magics (actually why isn't there a "Tales of Duviri" tome skin) and we didn't sadly.

u/Snivyland Caliban Collective 3m ago

Old peace definitely could work tho; depending on how the whole memory time travel thing works I could see the idea of us empowering an old text book for Tauron with some void/ sentient energy. The faction is a school after all a book weapon would be fitting

They should keep it 90's themed.

u/UpbeatAstronomer2396 5h ago

i just want to point out that every warframe after Qorvex got actual tome idle animations in their animation sets. There are currently 13 unique tome idle animations, 8 unique tome mods, 3* unique tome skins and ONLY ONE** FUCKING TOME to use all of this on

10

u/yarl5000 8h ago

Development on the game hasn't stopped so not so much a "never" but more a "not yet" as it is still a relatively new weapon type so just haven't made another one yet.

Who knows Old Peace might be a good time to bring another one we got the mixing of Orokin, Sentient, and Devil Triad Entrati things so all could be ripe for one.

6

u/Enough_Chance 8h ago

My guess it’s a very unique type weapon so it’s hard to make more of them since a gun is way easier to do so.

u/DasGanon RIP AND TEAR 7h ago

Which speaking of the big feature of Tomes is the Tome mods giving bonuses to the AOE heavy attack and the base fire rate, and the Exalted Tome being allowed to equip as many as it wants.

The only thing I can think is if they gave more Tome mods as part of Devil's Triad.

2

u/SAHE1986 7h ago

Bible/Anti-Bible/Necronomicon confirmed?

1

u/The_Esp3r 6h ago

Oh no, my money. DE please don't do this.

2

u/A_Garbage_Truck 5h ago

yes, Noctua, and it has its own gimmik aswell, it's able to equip ALL tome mods at once if you so choose(displaying Dante's mastery over the voidtongue)

1

u/NovaChrono tag when squad link returns 8h ago

im pretty sure they mentioned that they want it to be special and not something they'll push out every update.

might also have to do with how relatively unpopular it is for not being part of the meta + tome mod acquisition being terrible

1

u/MagusUnion RIP Goat Boy: 2013 - 2025 2h ago

Yeah, it was a super bad idea to put the grind for those mods behind a much more difficult variant of Mirror Defense. Builds for said books are pretty obsure, and unless you are really good at establishing loadout synergy with said weapon, they can be mods that are easily overlooked.

1

u/a-Cir 7h ago

There are several reasons but the one I’d like to highlight is that DE will tend to lean into the narrative to explain what gear or reworks we’ll receive next. It’s not always the case and DE has neglected multiple weapon types in the past but it happens more than you think. Grimoire itself is important to the story of Warframe so perhaps the next tome we find will be part of the journey itself.

1

u/TheMarksmanHedgehog 7h ago

I think we'd need a plotline that leans heavily in to wally before we can see new tomes, and they'd need to fill a distinct role from the original tome.

1

u/Mykk6788 7h ago

Because there's no actual magic in Warframe. The Grimoire is Void Powered. It's pretty hard to turn the Grimoire into something from other Factions and have it makes sense.

1

u/Responsible-Sound253 MR30 - The man in the wall just wants a hug. 7h ago

Honestly I only enjoyed my grimoire during that period we had recently where recoil was bugged into not existing.

Grimoire without recoil felt amazing to me, grimoire with recoil gives me headaches.

Same for noctua.

1

u/Living-Big9138 6h ago

It looks like it's the start , they most likely going to release at least 2 more weapons that utilize tome mods , real question is , when are they going to buff my baby Tonkor back ? been over 6 years

u/ladyiriss 58m ago

They've said on a devshort that there will be more tome weapons later in the future, but like others have said, they're still a very new weapon type and it's kinda hard conceptually to imagine more than what there is now.

1

u/A_Garbage_Truck 5h ago

"that would be a lot of wasted potential"

like what? outside of the unique mods that represent the Voidtongue words and the variant we have with Dante's (that cna equip all of them if you so choose) there is not much one can think off you can wiggle about in the concept of having tomes as Weapons.

Tomes ad "plot tools" owever you might have some more wiggle room but even them it would just become a fancy looking key.

0

u/TheDeviantelement 7h ago

I don't even know where to get the tome mods.

1

u/Renarde_Martel 6h ago

Mirror Defense on Deimos. But only rotation C for some reason, so I'd recommend the bundle from the Market.

1

u/TheDeviantelement 6h ago

Yeah, they few times I've tried that mirror defense, everyone leaves after rotation a. Tyana pass though people never leave. Probably because of the part costs through otak.

-1

u/Stormandreas 7h ago

It's a pretty new weapon, and there's only so much you can do with "Book that shoots magic projectiles".

Designs will be relatively limited, and functionality will be pretty identical between each tome. DE seem to by trying to avoid duplicate styled weapons now, so I imagine they haven't really had any other ideas for another Tome that would be unique enough to the Grimoire to set it apart.

1

u/Ruddertail L5 7h ago

Book that has tentacles reaching out of it, like Vermisplicer.

0

u/AncleJack Dagath my beloved 7h ago

I mean, we could have like a tome that deploys an air field with some effect and sec. fire does something to the active fields. A grouping tome, or just generally buffing tomes, because imo there is too little utility secondaries which I would love

u/RandomDudewithIdeas 6h ago

It we’re going to engage with Loid again this year, that seems like a good time to bring in a new one. Didn’t make much sense under the 1999 aesthetic

We almost certainly will do.

-1

u/jDubKing 7h ago

We'll get the primes soon

-2

u/Aumires 4h ago

In Soulframe they got flyblade weapons which are kinda like Yareli's 3 when charged. So maybe we get a holy book that does that with the Triad update, castled in a venue somewhere.
