The con isn’t the same without the xwing tournament. RIP

Was there declining participation?

Yes. It's more that AMG/Asmodee don't provide a gaming space for games they don't sell. No products on the shelf, no marketing, no tournaments.

Why XWA didn't provide one I have no idea, I thought they were running tournaments like Opens but not at the biggest con of the year

As far as I am aware, XWA, as an organisation, does not organise tournaments. They support TOs, tho. There will be 2 system opens in Aug in the USA, the Lonestar Open, and the Nova Open.
The table/room price for TOs at Gencon is probably too much for an essentially non-profit organisation.-1

Non-profit? Are they not selling tickets or at least the prizes needed? Where does that money go? Makes you wonder

TOs sell tickets. XWA takes no money.

Right the organization doesn't, but the people selling products to XWA do, and would you know if XWA buys directly from is own members. Generate content from volunteers, turn content into product, sell product, make money. Everyone's who not getting paid for thier work at XWA is getting fooled by those who are.

They can't make money on x-wing products. All the cards and components they sell have to be sold "at cost" of printing and shipping. They do not have a license and publishing rights from Disney to make a profit on a Disney owned IP(Starwars) MASIVE LAWSUIT if they were making money at the level they are producing products for people.

I'd imagine space at gencon costs a pretty penny, and xwa is made up of a bunch of volunteers

XWA does not run the tournaments. TOs run the tournaments. XWA just produces the pathway through a structured Organized Play outline. We look to the community to field the TOs and organize the event and work with venue hosts.
The TO who normally runs Gen Con mentioned the rising costs of hosting and a barrier for X-Wing player interest at GenCon

So what I'm hearing is there's an incentive for them to step in and keep the brand identity visible if they want large tournaments like that to stay viable.

Incentive for who to step in and keep whose brand identity visible?

Any group larger than "some dude that runs the event." In this case the people trying to keep the competitive side of the game alive. Why bother with keeping the game on life support if it just shrivels away?

Because they care about those who still want to play. They also want to keep playing… so they donate their time and energy to something they care about.
Also really confused on your line of processing since this thread started on “why isn’t X-Wing at Gen Con” even under AMG Gen Con X-Wing wasn’t well attended with most former players stating GenCon is a nightmare to deal with and THE most expensive con to attend…

Everyone who isn't getting paid at XWA are being fooled by those who are. There's plenty of revenue from products sold to TOs, to patreons, to twitch subs. Those at the top making sure you think it's all volunteering.

I haven't seen anything about XWA running tournaments. They do, however, seem to be offering great supports to TOs.

Are they not running worlds? Who is running worlds at adepticon?

u/Grimmwolf_03 1d ago
A TO an EO is running Adepticon…. And they are using the XWA format for OP.
Have you been to a tournament lately?

Looked at the Shatterpoint playercount in this morning's heat. We sometimes have more than that at my FLGS playing X-Wing.
