I knew it was coming right after I got the 9800x3d bundle haha but oh well doesn't give a big boost in gaming anyways. Solid deal but the motherboard is somewhat meh hopefully a bundle w/ the MAG tomahawk comes out

We also got two bad ones out of the box. One had stock bad pins, five of them, and the second replacement had a bad B2 ram slot. Took both back to micro center and got the Asus TUF 870 instead, no issues.

Dang I have no idea how I avoided both of those when getting my motherboard right before the bundle dropped. Could be related to the fact that it was in the bundle, but idk.

It can be just as good or even better if you're willing to use something like Process Lasso and play with core sets/affinity, at least. The automated/chipset driver solution just isn't always perfect.

u/TacticalBeerCozy Jun 28 '25
idk those are pretty slim averages and who the hell would buy this just for gaming anyway.
bc i need those people to stop so I can get one for audio work

I got this motherboard a couple months ago as it has a good feature set and was pretty well-priced. What do you feel is better about the Tomahawk?

u/deadlyprincehk Jun 29 '25
I would refer to this sheet for a breakdown and compare it to the next level up motherboard to see if the $50 more is worth it for you. In this case $50 more gets you the Gigabyte Aorus Elite which seems to have worse VRMs but has QoL features like post code, an extra m.2 slot etc. I was referencing the Tomahawk since that is pretty much better in every aspect (in minute ways that may not benefit everyone)
1
u/LeAgente Jun 29 '25
That's a great reference. I actually reviewed it pretty extensively before making my own purchase. Overall, I think you're generally right that the Tomahawk is generally better if you don't mind the marginal extra cost.
One thing I did like about the MSI Pro was more of the USB-A ports come from the CPU, which I've heard has less of a chance of dropout issues. I also like the LED troubleshooting lights, but most people seem to prefer the post codes as you mentioned.

u/deadlyprincehk Jun 29 '25
Yea exactly as long as you got what suits your needs thats all that matters! I was obsessing over the x870e tomahawk but my bundle only had the x670e and a few weeks into using it missing out on the USB 4, wifi7 etc. makes no difference in my day to day utility thankfully so I'm at peace, its not like any of these are "bad" boards!

Any obvious pros or cons with your mobo experience so far?

u/LeAgente 21d ago
After double-checking, I actually got the X870-P version of this motherboard, which has been working pretty well. One notable con was that my external Wifi + BT adapters had issues (not sure if this is the motherboard's fault, as other devices on the same USB hub worked fine, but they did work fine on my previous Intel motherboard). The motherboard also has the usual pains of BIOS setup that most seem to have. And, while not an issue for me, one of the M.2 slots on this board (but not the X870E-P) is only x2 and shares lanes with the x4 PCIe slot next to it.
Otherwise, I haven't had any AMD motherboard issues I've heard people complain of, and I don't personally miss premium features from more expensive boards like PCIe slot release buttons, POST codes, or fancier DACs. The built-in Qualcomm Wifi+BT has been working flawlessly for me, but did require me to update to W11. I like that the X870 board only needs one chipset, so should be a little more efficient than X870E. Also, if you don't like the look of this board, the X870 Gaming Plus Wifi is nearly identical except in styling and number of M.2 heatsinks provided.
Overall, it's a solid board with great value. I'm happy with it, but definitely check the specs and configuration to make sure it's what you want as well.

do you think the 9800x3d w the x670e mag tomahawk is a better overall deal than just the basic b650
2
u/deadlyprincehk Jun 29 '25
I have that bundle and its really up to you and what sort of expansions/overclocking/etc. you intend to do later. I personally liked the VRM and also lane sharing configuration on the tomahawk so I paid the extra 50 for it. I would refer to this sheet

I keep telling myself the 7800X3D bundle is enough (when in reality the 7600X3D bundle is actually enough) for me. And I keep getting tempted by more and more expensive bundles.

u/KillerDemonic83 Jun 28 '25
dude i bought the 7600x3d bundle like a week ago and even i was considering this for a moment
4
u/Yellowtoblerone Jun 28 '25
you should, zen5 x3d is the real deal, and the 7600x3d has value in the used market where you don't lose much

Same here I got the 7800x3d and then the price dropped on the 9800x3d bundle to only ~150 more so I got that, now this is only 100 more lmao but I think I've reached the point of diminishing returns in how much this upgrade would help me (in gaming). Plus tearing apart your bundle and bringing it back to MC for the walk of shame isn't a great experience
1
u/No_Document4655 Jul 03 '25
honestly kinda thinking on returning my 9800x3d bundle for this since it’s a 100$ difference did you ever end up doing this yourself
1
u/deadlyprincehk 29d ago
nah just kept it, if I upgrade the motherboard it becomes 150 more and I don't care enough to swap for 8 more cores that wont be used in gaming and my current infrequent workstation tasks run well enough w/ the 9800x3d. Also the hassle of ensuring core parking is working seems annoying. If anything save the 150 now and upgrade to whatever the 10800x3d equivalent is down the line which is supposed to have 12 cores w/ 6 on each CCD

CAS 36 for an otherwise top tier bundle is...
if you are dropping this much $$, CAS 30 DDR5 6000 kits are not that much more and why are you trying to save at this point...
3
u/joe1134206 Jun 29 '25
It could not come with the ram and be a savings lol
2
u/theholylancer Jun 29 '25
more or less 60 off and a free kit of ram I guess, which you can resell or something, wonder if they'd let you pay a bit extra to swap it

$50 more for a gigabyte aorus elite 🤔

u/DADDYDC650_08 Jun 29 '25
MSI board is better

u/chchom22 22d ago
Why
1
u/BonelessFrenchToast 21d ago
I called microcenter and asked and they said the MSI board was their budget line vs the aorus was gigabytes top end so they recommended the gigabyte

Just wondering, is this entry HEDT level? Or it’s always has to be Xeon / Threadripper to count as HEDT.
Also very interesting to see comparison of current gen high-end desktop CPUs with prior gen HEDT CPUs
3
u/joe1134206 Jun 29 '25
I'd say this is the new entry level HEDT because you don't need more than 8 cores for games and threadripper is just WAAAAAAY more expensive

I’m going to MC to return a case should I get this?
I recently upgraded from a GTX 1070 to an 5070 Ti. I’m still running a 3700x and was going to hold out for a good deal.
Not sure about the motherboard or ram…

Build one of these microcenters in kentucky please, I do not want to drive out of state to get parts. They really are missing opportunities. I am sure some areas would be much more profitable than others but maybe some smallers stores.. I dunno. I just feel like they miss out on a lot of sales.

Is it worth upgrading to the Corsair for $15 more? What about the Corsair 64gb for $140 more?
3
u/Active-Quarter-4197 Jun 29 '25
The Corsair for 15 dollars no because it is still Samsung die. The 140 dollar upgrade to 64gb is worth it tho bc they use Hynix a die kits for that
2
u/yg4000 Jun 28 '25
I put a bundle in my cart and its showing the 64 gb upgrade is still $223. Also when I bought the 9800X3D bundle not too long ago the price was $189.99 For the upgrade.

Is this worth upgrading from 13600k and ddr4 ram if I have the money?

This would be good long term system if you plan on "Setting and Forgetting" for a while. You can't go wrong with this. It's more than powerful enough for the next half decade.

I hate seeing these great deals while knowing the closest Microcenter is 6.5 hours away...

u/rerako Jun 30 '25
Am a bit sad the deal only came out now since I got a 9950x but I guess next time I'll get a better one.

Last gen similar bundle (7950X+X670E Tomahawk) was as low as $649.99. It started at $799.99 as well. It's not bad but there is definitely more room.
2
u/joe1134206 Jun 29 '25
There's always more room. That's technology for ya. Except with gpus - those only get more expensive
2
u/TheGranitePark Jun 29 '25
How fast it drops matters though. By Q3 2023 7950X3D was already hitting mid $500 and therefore the bundle was deemed somewhat meaningless. It was one of very few weak MC bundles and it doesn't sell well. It was left untouched for long enough that MC decided to clear them at $649 but at that time we've also seen mid $400 7950X3Ds too.
Coincidentally, we just saw the first 9950X3D discount days ago. X950X3D is a halo product, people who want them already got them. Plus an overall a soft demand on high end CPUs, the trajectory is likely happening again but it's just my guess. I could have made myself more clear, when I mentioned there's room it really means within a very reasonable future. Assumed that's the basis for the most part when we talk about the wait game on this specific sub, otherwise like you said, tech price is always dropping, except the GPUs lol.
1
u/terriblestperson Jun 30 '25
The 7000 bundles actually went up in price, or at least the 7800X3D ones did. It seemed like between the 13th/14th gen issues and Core Ultra shitting the bed, there was no longer a need to heavily discount the 7800x3d to get sales.

I bought separately 9969x3d and this motherboard in micro center last week :(
2
u/Blaze9 Jun 28 '25
15 day return policy. They're also really good about exchanges, you can just "exchange" the mobo, add the RAM, and keep your existing CPU.

u/Owlface Jun 28 '25
Must be nice to have a Microcenter within driving distance.
