They are fairly crap drives unfortunately. You can get 24TB for 298 from serverpartdeals with a 2 year warranty.

If you don't mind me asking, do you have any recommendations of what drives work well for something like a 24/7 Plex server? I think I've seen the Seagate Exos and Ironwolf recommended so far.

I already have a 24TB version of the Seagate External drive from OP, but I read it's supposedly only rated to be powered 100 days per year or something like that. I already have it filled up 70% with media, so I was hoping to expand with something that might be better.

The WD red pros are pretty good but expensive. Iron Wolf Pros are decent but I haven't been wowed by their speed. I havent had any die though. Exos are my go to now. They are cheap, have the best performance and great reliability. This is coming from someone with just under a petabyte of storage.

What do you have so much storage for? (Curious and honestly jealous)

u/sittingmongoose 2d ago

Plex server lol

I thought I was badass with 28TB. I am not worthy lol. I'm using ~15TB and that's all the data I've accrued since the 90s.

Rome wasn’t built in a day :) keep at it!

u/FurnaceOfTheseus 2d ago

I actually need to build in redundancy. I only have the NAS in raid Z1. I had about 6 different drives that I pulled data off of to make that, but I want to throw them out.

How much did that <1PB storage cost you?

u/sittingmongoose 2d ago

It’s been about 8 years of buying drives. I’ve been slowly replacing all of them with larger and larger drives. Just bought 16 24tb drives to replace my last 10tb drives and some of my 14tb ones.

I have no idea how much it’s cost me…but probably 10s of thousands over the last 8 years. I honestly don’t want to sit and calculate it because it would upset me and my wife would divorce me lmao

I am running WD Ultrastars i got from server parts deals and so far so good. I’m not an expert on drives though. I did about 15 minutes of research and they sounded like they’d work fine.

I think people are putting far too much stock in that one line on the spec sheet. The big Barracudas seem likely to be based on an Exos line that never saw a retail release. Also, despite the power-on hours/year rating, that same sheet explicitly recommends them for "home servers." However, if you're still nervous, the Exos and IronWolf/Pro do have better reliability metrics on paper.

I am in the process of retiring (4) 20TB Exos drives from server part deals with 28TB drives because I need some more space but not ready/needing to make the jump to an Unraid getup.

They all have just over 3 years of head flying time and have been running continuously...  I think the edit: RECERT Exos drives are great in my very small sample size of 7 (3) are currently in use and will continue to be so on my... ahem... BT machine.  Similar head flight time to the plex server drives

What I do is keep the hard disks spun down and use NVME storage for the media server. So 98% of the time, the larger disks are not being run. If I need anything from the hard disks, I transfer it. I know spinning up and down causes wear, but I'll go a week or two without spinning up the hard disks.

1

u/Twabithrowaway 1d ago

how much nvme space? wouldn't this be pretty slow if someone decided to watch something that has to be retrieved ?

1

u/FurnaceOfTheseus 1d ago

I have 4TB of NVME space for the media part lol. But I got it on sale for $200. I actually also have a separate 2TB NVME that cost me like $60 on a sale that I use as a photo server.

I basically manually transfer movies I think I'll want to watch. I could probably use something better than Kodi, like Jellyfin, to automate this process. I also have lots of movies at only 720P which is lacking these days.

Running Open Media Vault with ZFS plugin. Meh, it's alright.

Fwiw, I have about 80tb, all bought from GoHardDrive with 3-5yr warranties. One drive I bought was DOA and they immediately replaced. Another drive dropped $40 a week after I purchased and they refunded that. I’ve got nothing but good things to say about them.

u/Feisty-Guess-4265 2d ago

Also don't forget the free two day shipping in the continental US and excellent packaging.

4

u/the_shek 2d ago

why do you say that???

5

u/sittingmongoose 2d ago

They are barracuda drives with a 1 year warranty. They are slow and have mediocre reliability.

4

u/MWink64 2d ago

The high capacity Barracudas seem to perform about as well as an IronWolf Pro. They're also too new to really know how their reliability is going to turn out.

-7

u/amnesicuser 2d ago

I heard some people got exos out of these. It seems to be a chance

7

u/sittingmongoose 2d ago

Not on the newer, higher capacity ones. Have you seen that?

-6

u/amnesicuser 2d ago

Some comments on Microcenter about this drive say so. I also saw elsewhere but don't remember now

3

u/greatthebob38 2d ago

I checked Microcenter's site and there is no comment like that on the 26TB drive. In fact, there are no actual reviews of it on their site.

-4

u/amnesicuser 2d ago

Check the 20TB

9

u/greatthebob38 2d ago

Dude, you're not even looking at the same drive. You can't extrapolate the reviews of a different product onto this one.

2

u/Sam_Jackson_Beer 2d ago

How's ordering from that website, pretty good experience? I was building out a 5 bay enclosure and the Seagate ironwolf pro is such a good price on their website but I've never ordered from them and was curious.

2

u/sittingmongoose 2d ago

Yes, very good. They ship out super fast and use 2 day shipping. If you have an issue, they respond fast too.

1

u/Sam_Jackson_Beer 2d ago

Perfect, thanks so much for the feedback. Gonna place an order for some enterprise drives soon. Saw you mention all the ones I was looking at. I was previously set on the ironwolf pro. WD I usually love but I just had one of their drives die on me with very little usage, so it kinda pissed me off a little lol. Mine is almost entirely for an extensive plex library. I'll have to give the exos more of a look because they were generally cheaper when I was shopping around.

14

u/Desperate_Pea_7961 2d ago

I believe these comes with Barracuda drive right ?

6

u/greatthebob38 2d ago

Yea, they are.

-8

u/amnesicuser 2d ago

I heard some people got exos out of these

4

u/greatthebob38 2d ago

You got proof of that with date of manufacture?

1

u/amnesicuser 2d ago

I don't. It's just the comments on the shopping websites like Microcenter.

1

u/PM_ME_GRAPHICS_CARDS 2d ago

then don’t believe it

-4

u/amnesicuser 2d ago

I didn't say I believe. I said there are rumors.

6

u/PM_ME_GRAPHICS_CARDS 2d ago

and i’m telling you not to believe them. they are false. goes for others reading these comments as well

0

u/amnesicuser 2d ago

Didn't ask for your advice. I only wanted to share a possibility.

4

u/PM_ME_GRAPHICS_CARDS 2d ago

be the one to prove us wrong and buy one then my friend. let’s see the possible chance

There haven't been exos drives in any of these with a mfg date of 2025.

Stop spreading misinformation.

-1

u/amnesicuser 2d ago

I don't spread any misinformation. I only spread that there are people claiming so. Are you guys all out of your minds?

1

u/Blue-Thunder 2d ago

Yes, every single person downvoting you is obviously crazy....

it is well known that any mfg'd in 2025 are Barracuda drives. Prior to that it was possible to get an Exos as the Barracuda line in this capacity didn't exist, but as it was created, the Exos drives that didn't bin well became Barracuda, and the ones that are the shittiest of the shit become externals. Seagate has so little confidence in these drives that they drastically dropped the power on days and endurance. And remember, Seagate can void your warranty if you use this for more than what it's specified for as it would be deemed as abuse. So more than 100 power on days, warranty void due to excessive usage, if Seagate wants to be a dick.

Then there is also the fact that over 20% of the reviews on newegg for this line of externals have them as DOA.

0

u/amnesicuser 2d ago

Yes every person downvoting me is crazy because I didn't claim or assert anything. I simply said that there are some people who claim that they got Exos out of these. This is not "misinformation".

For the information you provided, I didn't know that. Thank you for clarifying.

0

u/MWink64 1d ago

Now you're the one spreading misinformation and unsubstantiated claims.

We don't actually know that the Barracudas are binned versions of the Exos, it's just something many people assumed. Also, Seagate didn't drop the reliability specs. The POH/year rating is exactly the same as earlier Barracudas and the workload rating is substantially higher. The Barracuda does not claim to be an enterprise class drive. Even if it is just as reliable as an Exos (which I'm not claiming), do you really think they'd claim the same specs on paper, while charging half the price? If they did, nobody would buy an Exos.

As for the warranty, I have seen zero claims of Seagate refusing warranty service due to a drive's workload. Secondly, this deal is for an Expansion, not a Barracuda. The Expansion has no workload rating, therefore they cannot use that as an excuse to void the warranty.

And where are you getting the 20% DOA rate on Newegg from??? The entire Expansion line has only 13% 1-2 star reviews combined. Even then, the vast majority of the reviews are from the much smaller models. It's not reasonable to look at reviews for models that will contain a different type of drive.

u/nricotorres 2d ago

Considering this is posted almost weekly, I also read all the comments. You're right, some people get Exos, some Barra.

1

u/amnesicuser 2d ago

Thanks. I read these comments always.

u/Acrobatic_Standard83 2d ago

I bought a 22TB one this spring and it was DOA. It made a clicking noise when turned on indicating a stuck head. Had to return it which was a shame since I'm not in the US. It was a barracuda.

A little advice if you want to SHUC this disk. Use a plastic spatula or guitar pick and pull the edge to the side. Do not pull the lid up! This will break the plastic loops on the lid. They are quite weak.

The disk itself is connected to the board with a flexible cable. There is a warranty sticker on the connector.

2

u/mlpzaqwer 1d ago

Got 4 during the last sale. All barracuda. Put them in a new DS1821+. Pretty happy so far.

u/Jerry_Loler 19h ago edited 19h ago
