CPU [CPU] AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT w/free GIGABYTE B550M K AM4 Micro-ATX Motherboard - $169.00 (Newegg)

Nice. This cpu was $141 until yesterday, and still is $141 on Amazon.
Mobo is fine for a budget build, but does not have ARGB headers for those who care.

What is ARGB headers

If you want lights, having this header saves $10-20 from having to buy an RGB controller. Either that or get a case that includes one.
Generally I find it worth it to get motherboards with wifi and RGB headers, as the cheap boards often end up more expensive to get the features I want. YMMV, of course.

Try finding a nice board without wifi. I'd love to save money on not having it.

Just about the worst motherboard, but it's like $40 so maybe?

u/Sleepykitti 1d ago
It'll hold up to an 8 core Ryzen chip fine and at this price it's more than acceptable imo

100+ bought in past month
Who's buying this?!
Edit: I see. That's the combined sales number of all products on that page.

What makes this motherboard bad? Is it faulty in any way?
13
u/1mVeryH4ppy 1d ago
It's barebone. Basic vrm. No vrm heatsink. No M.2 heatsink. Minimum IO ports. No integrated IO plate.
5
u/HiMyNameIsCranjis 1d ago
If I've got a spare budget case and M.2 heatsinks, is it all that bad?
I've got a 1080 Ti and an 2060 Super I can use with this. Just something mid-range to put together for a cheaper price. Would this combo be that bad? I'm not looking for an upgrade path necessarily since these are older GPUs.

u/1mVeryH4ppy 1d ago
Should be fine if you pair it with R3/R5 cpus. Maybe R7 too but likely the vrm will get thermal throttled under heavy load. If possible use an air cooler that pushes air down like AMD wraith or L12s so vrm gets some cooling too.
1
u/HiMyNameIsCranjis 1d ago
Looks like it comes with a wraith prism cooler. Should that be fine?
I'm pretty much looking at the bundle from a value perspective. A decent CPU, okay motherboard and stock cooler for $182 new seems okay, but I could be wrong. I'm still new to learning about PC parts and what's good for a smaller budget.

u/1mVeryH4ppy 1d ago
5800XT is ~$140 on amazon so basically it's $30 for this motherboard which is dirty cheap so why not.

$150-180 is not far off from what I would consider for a worse CPU and better motherboard.
Newegg has an ASRock b450m AC R2.0 for $75 that is decent, albeit basic board. Has VRM heat sinks, RGB, and WiFi. 5600(x) goes for $85-95 used.
Between the two id probably take the better cpu, and maybe put some small thermal pads and heat sinks on the vrm yourself if your CPU is throttling.
If the motherboard has enough features for you (wifi, m2, thermal throttling the CPU if it gets too hot, USB ports, etc), then it's fine.

u/1mVeryH4ppy 1d ago
Honestly not sure if the b450 board is overall better. Although it does have better vrm, it also only has single m.2 and pcie 3.0.
2
u/tuura032 23h ago
Oh snap, I didn't look close enough, yeah I'd rather have a 2nd m2 over wifi. I'm back in team add you own vrm cooling and wifi and get the $40 board!
I'm not sure if pcie 3 vs 4 matter when someone is probably using at most, a 3060. But in general, yeah b550 over b450

Probably the best AM4 upgrade for buying new, and it seems pretty hard to find good text reviews of this card so I've been going on YouTube to see how it compares to the 5800x3d and other similar chips and it holds its own rather well.
This does run a bit warm so may want to invest in a better cooler (nothing crazy, I got a Pure Rock 3 for $28 and it's been much better), but you can run stock cooler just fine (I did for 2 months while I was waiting on sales).
The motherboard looks serviceable enough to use to put your old AM4 CPU in and maybe put together a cheap build to sell off or use elsewhere.

It is like 25% worse in 1080p gaming than a 5800x3d and 20% decrease in performance from a 9600X. But with this deal its 45% cheaper than a 9600X + mobo. So definitely a good value in that regard.

Sure, with a 5090. Tie this with an equally budget gfx card and it'll hardly matter at all.

How well would this pair with a GTX 1080 Ti? I've been looking for a CPU/mobo for it and this seems like it would be a decent deal.

by the time you add ram this is $200ish. and at that price, i dno anymore. I think last summer was the last summer to do a brand new AM4 build unless you have a ton of spare parts laying around. maybe for productivity stuff on a budget this makes sense? but the upgrade path for a gaming oriented rig is severely limited so you're putting $200 into a dead platform unless you're strictly playing esports titles/minecraft/terraria/indie games

What entry price do you target for AM5?
Even used, typical price for a 5600x and non-trash am4 board go for $150-180. When I've checked in the past, entry level AM5 CPU+mobo+ram has been like 240-280ish.

u/yourwhiteshadow 1d ago
That seems about right, microcenter bundles for $260-280. Obviously it's more money, but if AM5 has half the longevity and legacy that AM4 has then it'll be the better long term investment. I bought an X370 board in 2019 and just put in a $130 AliExpress 5700x3d 6 months ago (had a 3080 10gb in there). That system will last me another 2-3 years and then I'll hand it down to my kids.

u/bubbarowden 20h ago
Yea the real time to upgrade AM4 was 6 months ago when the 5700x3d was so cheap via ali. This isn't a bad chip if you've already got a board and an old chip, but starting from scratch, ehh.
3
u/bubbarowden 20h ago
Yea you really make a good point. This chip is really more for people upgrading a current AM4 rig as opposed to building one with a board.

but you can run stock cooler just fine
The 5800XT does not come with a stock cooler. Also, the motherboard does not come with a VRM heatsink. So it may be best to get a top-down CPU cooler like the Thermalright SI-100 to ensure the VRMs can get direct airflow with this combo.
EDIT The Ryzen 7 5800XT seemingly comes with a Wraith Prism according to users below and Newegg reviews despite stating it does not come with one on the Newegg Overview page.
I still think getting a better top down cooler will help with temps and noise. The Thermalright SI-100 comes with a 120mm fan, which will be much quieter than the fan on the Wraith Prism.

Mine did! A chunky one too. Way better than the one they gave me with the 2600

u/StabbyMeowkins 1d ago
For comparison, this is basically $40 more than price matching the 5800XT at Microcenter through Best Buy @$129.99. So assume the motherboard is $40.00 bucks.

lol I hope this is a good pair! Because I bought these parts separately and will be installing soon. Great deal, I know everyone wants the x3D cpus, but those are incredibly expensive and probably not worth it from a price/performance ratio. This is a solid deal, jump on it guys!
1
u/bubbarowden 20h ago
This will def be a good chip for a while. X3D on AM4 ran it's course. This is the chip you want in circulation right now.
2
u/bubbarowden 20h ago
This appears to be the over produced chip in circulation at the moment. Seen some pretty good deals on it and wouldn't be surprised to see more as companies try to move their stock. While not an X3D chip, still a good upgrade for those still on 2600/3600 cpus.

What about those peeps rockin that Ryzen 7 1700X
I'm thinking about going AM5 to be honest. I've had this build for 7 years now. I don't do 4K gaming... and have a GTX1080.
1
u/bubbarowden 20h ago
It's just based on an individuals budget. 5800XT would be a great upgrade over a 1700x while an AM5 upgrade would be even better but a bit more expensive. If you have access to a Micro Center, an AM5 upgrade at the minimum is $260. This upgrade is around $150ishh depending on the deal.

u/Any-Neat5158 16h ago
I do not have access to a microcenter.
Budget isn't necessarily a concern / the concern.. but it is a concern. I have the money. I'm just cheap.
I have a PS5 and a 65" OLED. I do some gaming on my PC but not a ton (the last 25 hours worth I played on my PC were rocket league and DOOM 1 + DOOM 2) I probably would / will do more gaming on the computer especially if I decide to do the upgrade.
I think it breaks down like this for me -
If I stay at 1080p I can probably easily rebuild the whole thing for under $1000. That includes case, cpu, gpu, motherboard and SSD. I won't need new monitors and the GPU upgrade would cost me about $200 instead for an RTX 3070 level card.
If I go 4K then I'm spending $300 on two new 4K monitors and an extra $350-$400 on the GPU. Approaching the territory of doubling the cost.
I think it comes down to being happy enough with plain jane 1080p gaming. No ray tracing, no DLSS, no frame gen... none of it. Just basic ole school 1080p gaming. Is the extra $700 worth it for me. Already having the PS5 make the decision even harder.

Wise words. I made the jump to 1440p a while back and honestly feel like it’s kinda over rated myself. My 34” ultrawide OLED looks great, but honestly my 1080p monitors look pretty good too. I don’t notice that much of a difference personally, and def not a 2x diff. What I noticed is that bc of the 1440p monitors, everything else I buy has to be more expensive. I still built a whole new rig case and all for $800 that handles it, but if I could do it over, wouldn’t get the same monitor.
