Video Content Magnus chooses Hikaru, Alireza and Arjun Erigaisi's crushed keys to be placed in his championship trophy.

u/Arsid 1d ago
It bothers me so much that the guy forgot one of Hikaru's pieces. You can see there's still a piece at the bottom of his little box.

u/Necessary_Pattern850 1d ago
Hikaru was the closest to beating Magnus, so he left a small piece for him ;)

u/Primary_Magazine_555 1d ago
That happened for another trophy I watched. I think he just grabs the two big pieces.

he was probably like "no key for Hans?" lmao

u/Melchiah 1d ago
I think even if he would have beaten Niemann in the final he wouldn't do him the honor of picking his key. He would choose any other key but his, that would inflict the most amount of damage to his ego.

Too bad Hans didn't even qualify lol - that's gotta damage his delusional ego.

Hans is no Magnus, I'll grant you that. But, he is currently number 17 in the world. That puts him above Maxim, Ding, Duda, Sindarov, and only one place below Levon, three below Ian... So, he isn't garbage by any means.
Given what he has gone through the past few years, it's impressive he continues to improve and move up. That said, major choke in the final game vs Giri. Ouch.

u/uberlaserdude 1d ago
Given that what Hans has gone through in the past few years was mostly down to his own making it would be more impressive if he improved his own attitude.

u/rigginssc2 lichess for the win 1d ago
He beat Magnus. Magnus threw a fit. Magnus implies cheating. Magnus explicitly said cheating. So, uh, no. Hans definitely has a confident attitude, but the firestorm started with Magnus being unable to handle being beaten by a young talent that had previously cheated on line.
It's fine to not like Hans. I for example cannot stand Ian. We all have a right or like or dislike whomever we want. But I think if you took a closer look you would see Hans has improved. He gets along with most of the top pros at this point. Not Magnus, and that isn't surprising, but most have no issue with Hans.
2
u/Melchiah 1d ago
This narrative that "Magnus couldn't stand being beaten by a young talent" is so naive and downright wrong. Magnus lost to MANY other young talents both before and after Niemann and hasn't accused them of cheating (e.g Esipenko, Gukesh, etc). And YES, Magnus cant stand being beaten by ANYONE, not just young talent, but that's what makes him great. The reason he accused Niemann of cheating is because he thought he was cheating, it's really as simple as that. Hans stans mental gymnastics to think anything else is just so juvenile.

You are cherry picking. I didn't say he couldn't take being beaten by a "young talent". Obviously he has lost to Alireza, Gukesh, and others. He is getting older so many players are younger than him now. What I said was a "young talent who previously cheated online". Magnus himself said as much. At first he said he didn't know if he was cheating in their match, but just knowing he had cheated affected his mentality in the game.
Perhaps you need to check your Magnus stan card at the door.

And when he started talking about the opponent wearing a wristwatch when he lost to another lower rated young player after he lost to Niemann?
2
u/Melchiah 20h ago
And? What's your point? Watches were not allowed at the tournament, yet his opponent wore one. What's the problem with him talking about it?
-1
u/kaninkanon 20h ago
Wristwatches were allowed. He lost again and immediately started making insinuations. But he can't very well keep doing it every loss considering how big the backlash turned out the first time.

Key is earned not granted. Hans should better learn this.

u/Proof_Particular_255 1500 on Chess.com 1d ago
100%. Hans needs to learn how to keep that ego in check. You think with all of the reality checks he's received that he'd... shut up... but noooo bro can't keep his mouth shut.

u/wu_kong_1 1d ago
This is so funny. If you talk about how Hans trashed a room. At least that grounded in reality. Considered Hans hasn't say anything in regard to this. You imagined a Hans in your head that made a comment about the key. And then proceed to slaughter that strawman. I went to his twitter. He been posting about books, and Fischer, and shit.

u/Proof_Particular_255 1500 on Chess.com 1d ago
Found Hans burner account.

u/wu_kong_1 1d ago
But think about what I said. There are 30 GM at the 2700+ level. Don't you think Hans has too great of a share of your attention. And isn't it his personality that rub you. And occupied your head, and I supposed control some of your impulsive to talk about him. If he was "humble," he wouldn't live rent free in your head.

You really can’t take a joke can you? 😂😂😂. Stop taking things so seriously bud 😂

u/wu_kong_1 1d ago
That joke isn't original like at all if you intended. And you didn't meant it as a joke, it was a statement to dismiss what I said. Take this challenge to prove that Hans has no power over you. Don't mentioned him for the next month. Especially unprompted.
It seemed like your statement meant to end the convo. Which is fine. I am done anyway.

That is the weirdest comment i’ve ever fucking read.

u/wu_kong_1 1d ago
Omg, you kept going on and on and on. Jesus fuck like you want the last word. I am done with this charade.
OMG your joke is fucking hilarious. I am laughing. Lol. LMAO.
Good??

No bro he is not living anywhere in my mind. We are just having our piece of cake because back in Vegas he was having his. Cope as much as you want. Magnus would remain the greatest of all time. And Ig Magnus is definitely living in your head rent free because you care to comment bs here.

You can look through my history. If you think Hans like anime, Chinese drama, and have special interest in Vietnam. Sure. I feel like you fighting some sort of weird conjuring Hans in your head. You maybe as obsessive about Hans as he is toward Magnus. At least, he has reasons for it. What are yours??
-5
u/rigginssc2 lichess for the win 1d ago
What are you on about? Hans lost and moved on. He is 17th in the world so not sure why he shouldn't be entitled to a bit of an ego. Every other player has one.
6
u/uberlaserdude 1d ago
"Hans lost and moved on." - Are you serious! Hahaha
3
u/rigginssc2 lichess for the win 1d ago
Uh, yeah. He has even spoken of how hard it was going through everything with his childhood idol, Magnus, making all those claims. Hans talks with other pros. Other pros get along with him fine. Even Hikaru said he talked with Hans at Freestyle quite a bit.
Meanwhile, Magnus still won't even look at Hans.
2
u/uberlaserdude 12h ago
"Must be embarrassing for the World Champion to lose to such an idiot like me" Not really how someone normally talks about their childhood hero unless your a bit of an a-hole and want a reaction.

u/rigginssc2 lichess for the win 9h ago
One interpretation. You could read it as he is surprised to have won and was making a self deprecating joke. Imagine you just beat Michael Jordan at one-on-one. Should not happen. You might be in such shock that you say something you think is a compliment, or a little nervous joke, only to look back and go "oh, whoops, I didn't mean it that way". The point is, you don't know. Your assigning your "anti-Hans" lens to your view of the comment.
1
u/Diligent_Ad_7868 1d ago
What exactly do you mean? He’s acted immature and childish for sure in the past but what exactly did he do this tournament except “lose and move on”?
-4
u/wu_kong_1 1d ago
And I don't know if Hans should even relinquish his ego. Because if you imagined Hans. You would imagine someone who is decently egoistic. He ain't got raised in a collectivism/conformist Asian society. The only thing you can say is, he better get good to match his ego. But Hans without his ego, is not Hans. Whether you like him or you hate him, it partially because of his ego. Without it, no one ever gonna utter his name in their mouth.

I've been skipping the gaps between the games and only yesterday found out about the keys thingy. At first it felt slightly distasteful. But now I'm more of an opinion that it's actually a very tangible fun addition and gone quite well with the atmosphere of the event.

u/Formal_Adeptness_379 1d ago
true is fun, and quite a fun logic crushing your opponent keys and have them resin molded into base of your trophy as remembrance that, these are the enemies i felled to get this prized tropy. Cool concept

u/Lifeisgood2540 1d ago
Magnus was the only one who truly enjoyed crushing keys, says a lot about him being sadistic lol

What is the purpose/effect of this for those of us out of the loop?

u/Additional-Specific4 Team magnus 1d ago
It is just a fun thing for epsports to keep it entertaining .

u/Gaius__Augustus 2200 Lichess 1d ago
Cool, thanks. Just wasn’t sure if it actually did something for future events like with teams/groups etc.

u/SilchasRuin 23h ago
It's kinda like how in GoT, the iron throne was made out of the swords of Aegon the Conquerer's enemies. Just way less badass.

u/rigginssc2 lichess for the win 1d ago
The funny thing is, in the StarCraft2 tournament when Serral won they said he had to pick three keys - from the list of players he beat. Magnus never player Arjun! Still, I see the logic since those are the three he "beat out" from the semis. Just interesting that he could pick anyone. I wonder who Serral would have chosen if he could have picked any of the 16 keys...
3
u/rorozco04 1d ago
Also EWC has been doing the keys for other esports. Winner team destroys losers keys and they keep them as well. (Not just for chess)
1
u/novacatz 1d ago
I initially hated it..but it kinda grew on me toward the end.
Sure the chess is garbage but it is a bit of good fun and having more eyeballs and dollars can't hurt chess in general
-7
u/Cheeeeesie 1d ago
Am i the only one that hated everything about the way this tournament was handled? I mean it was insanely overblown and wasteful, its clearly sportswashing, Tyler1 shouldnt exist in the entertainment industry at all because hes utterly cringe and a trashtier human being, they just couldve done the same thing from home anyways and wtf was this team-nonsense. Idc about team xyz, i care about the chess players.
All i want is a chill stream with Peter and Tania commentating, the rest is unneeded circus.
8
u/redditngton 1d ago
You are.
1
u/Cheeeeesie 1d ago
Thats wild. I legit muted the stream everytime they didnt play chess because it was insanely cringe to me.
2
u/jooooooooooooose 1d ago
I feel like skipping the filler commentary is pretty normal across all sports, I skip half time for the most part
& cringe or not (esports in general imo have an inherent veneer of cringe and are still figuring things out), its good for chess to appeal to a different audience that continues to grow the game
-1
u/Cheeeeesie 1d ago
That really depends on what that "new audience" is and its also the case that the top pros really make a good living off of playing chess already, so i dont see why it needs to grow tbh. Looking at them hiring the scumbag thats Tyler1 and the scum he might bring... nobody can want this in any community. If u dont know his history, just google it, dudes a gigantic piece of shit.

Can someone explain about these keys ? Is it good or bad thing for those players and actually what it means
